I wouldn't take the spinoffs as anything overly serious, at least as far as character progression and the like is concerned. The stories of P3 and P4 has strong thematic overtones and were crafted deliberately and cleverly in a way to express that. I doubt the spinoffs had that much thought really put into their narratives. That's not to say that the spinoffs were bad (I loved Rei's tale in Q) but they're a bit flimsy when held up to the games from which they sprung from, as is evident by almost all the characters that have since become flanderised.
I don't even believe that the main writers/creative minds for P3/P4 were really involved heavily with the spinoffs?

Didn't take long to notice this with Arena, and I found myself enjoying it more as a fighting game with familiar characters, rather than a full blown sequel to what the previous games established.

And yes, the whacky premise was already a turn off, alone for the fact that it is a dancing game which is hardly in the top of games that I delve into. Kinda of a quirky way to send off the P4 cast if you ask me, but good for those who enjoy this kind of stuff.

The magnificent Troy Baker is no longer voicing Kanji anymore because of some reasons -- Naoto's mystery voice actress is uncertain, I'm not that big on her new voice, it pales in comparison to the old one. Margaret's old voice was perfect, but she was replaced because her schedule didn't line up with the casting (family matters etc). Ken's new voice is probably an improvement if anything -- Him and Fuuka are only ones from the P3 cast who've been recasted.
Kanji's new voice actor is Discount Baker, aka Matt Mercer, he was pretty terrible in the anime but alright in Ultimax.. still not the same as Troy.
The worst of the worst is Igor's new voice which I hope isn't permanent for P5 as well -- Bring back Dan Woren damnit, who also happened to be the voice of Ikutsuki which is rather quiant in this case.
It's not like it's the first time it's happened. Teddie and Chie having new voices since Persona 4 Arena etc. Miss the old Teddie but oh well
It's good that Travis Willingham still plays that particular Velvet Room attendant in Ultimax at least.
