My first impression of him was a deskboy-turned-detective.

I think that was Adachi's intent really.

Adachi was a competent detective. I don't know if I'd call him a talented one in the same fashion as that of Naoto -- He made one screw-up, and it basically turned the world upside down on him. His superiors would restation him in a boring little suburban town. He'd study his ass off and work hard but in the end -- He'd receive nothing for it. It's a lot like The Joker's origin story. All it takes is one day to drive a man lunacy. It's actually scary, how accurate such a statement truly is.

Come to think of it, Dojima probably knew about Adachi's track record. He was complaining that he was acting like a rookie.

If it weren't for the murders, I probably would have felt sorry for Adachi.

He doesn't deserve pity -- He's a shell of a man who acts with no conscience, reason and blatant disregard for anyone but himself -- As such, he's the repressed shadow of your average upstanding guy, in this case, the player -- As the protagonist, we find ourselves uplifting those around us, Adachi utilizes his position of power for self-satisfaction, the need for becoming policeman was a convienient way of expanding his authority -- The interesting thing to note about that, is that a lot of people are like this, in the world we live in anyway. Soejima referred to him as a competent detective, who had fallen from grace after some unknown sin, implying that his true disposition has always been him being an *******.

Adachi isn't a victim here. He's a guy who assigns blame and hostility towards his peers he considers superior, thus creating a scapegoat to avoid any repercussions for his own actions. It's a repeat of what I mentioned before about "ressentiment", which is also a term that is brought up in the game, again and again. It all comes full circle doing his boss-fight monologue, where he talks about how talent is only key to success in life, where anyone else might as well give up and sulk in the mud.

What Adachi deserves, however, is our understanding and respect for being such an interesting character. In the end, he's nothing more than a brute with a gun, whose as smart as your average detective, using conventional means, lies and a nice goofy-friendly-looking facade to shield his sociopathic nature. A truly frightening villain.

I'd like this awesome explanation of Adachi's character but I used them all on dating advice ethers.

His mention of talent being a magic ticket some people just had makes me think he wasn't particularly talented himself. More of a punch clock detective maybe, good enough to understand the basics of police procedure and investigations, worked his ass of to get there but wasn't nearly as good as say Dojima or Naoto.

He's certainly an interesting and compelling character. One that I don't believe is worthy of respect however. Understanding, yes, but he's just so contemptible that I can't muster any bit of respect.

He's pathetic and narcissistic and uses the injustices of society as an excuse for his own ineptitude.

His response to rejection is to get angry and violent, which I suppose is what's felt most by most people, only dialed up to the extreme. Mayumi rejects his advantages so he tries to rape her, I guess? I don't think that would have been an isolated incident either, considering how he reacted to Saki too.

I pointed that out too in a previous comment. He's not talented, in the same fashion that Naoto is talented. According to Soejima, he was a competent detective before he arrived in Inaba. That one screw-up and the following consequences that ensued changed him. The problem lies with how all of his efforts on studying his ass off, and ignoring social bonding, has brought him no results. That's his problem -- The problem he has with the rest of the world. In the end, he thinks "talent" is the ticket to success, whereas hard effort and just "being talented" is mutually exclusive.

I think that Adachi's obvious goofball attitude, and seemingly unprofessional disposition in the game is but another facade to shroud his true nature. I mean, how could one suspect that a seemingly incompetent guy like him "not that he isn't" would have been able to pull of these murders and pin them on Namatame. In fact, he could have quite easily gotten away with it. That proves how smart he can really be.

In fact, it's not even 100 % correct what I mentioned earlier -- Adachi isn't a clever-mastermind nor is he a brute, he's just a guy with a gun, who's given up on the world. A frightening villain because he could essentially be any of us.

Also his plot in Ultimax also shows how smart he also can be. Won't say more for spoilers but you know what I'm talking about,

I really hope Atlus gives  P5 hero their own voice so we don't have stuff like this again in the english version.

Though at least Yuri just changed his Minato voice and left Brosukes alone, wish JYB did that for for Adachi and Yu >.>

Actually, I'd prefer if he stays as blank as possible, like always -- I just hope they are more considerate with their choice of actors this time.

Well he'll have a  voice no matter what, but in P3 and 4 in Japanese, the protag always had their own voice so when anime did happen they didn't have to worry too much which is what Atlus USA should have did and hopefully they do it this time.

I don't really give a flying crap about any animes or any of the spin-offs. Spin-offs shouldn't dictate the flow of the main games, something which BioWare hasn't taken to heart. You play Persona 5 because you want to play Persona 5, not because you want to play Persona 5 "Insert Spin-off title here". The protagonist is no doubt a blank slate and thus I prefer him that way too in any sense of the word -- The character I was playing in Persona 4 wasn't Yu Narukami, nor was it Souji Seta or whatever -- He was my character and how I interpreted him was important to me. The only protagonists who weren't blank slates, at all, were the ones from Persona 2 and that's what made me dislike them -- Because they already have backstory, knowledge, friendship, baggage established on their record, which actually breaks any sense of connection between the player and the protagonist -- the worst part is that the lack of speech made it somewhat difficult to sympathize too much with their struggles, because the game already assumed you'd done your homework.
That's like demanding something out of the player for the sake of gaining any enjoyment out of the game, same case with giving him a voice and not make him a blank slate.

We don't need Persona 5 to turn into Final Fantasy or similar "modern JRPGs", where we are forced into the roles of agonizing pre-determined ****** protagonists with a hilarious mullet for a haircut.

Let him have a voice that'll shout Persona 5 names and such -- That's fine but leave it at that.

So long as they don't make an anime about P5 or make spin-off's like they did with Arena and Ultimax, he should be fine. :)

Oh, they will -- The point was merely that he shouldn't have a voice in the game that matters -- Persona 5. They can do whatever they want with an anime adaptation or spin-offs/direct sequels.
