I don't think Vivienne would be necessarily mandatory. I said I woudn't be sure on her not being it.
We know that most of the companions won't be mandatory, but we don't know the exact number, and they might have chosen one per class to be mandatory. I think it's better to not expect her to be optional, to not be disappointed if she'll turn out to be mandatory.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I simply don't see a reason for her to be mandatory at this point. She's politically tied to one side of the civil war, she has a position on the Mage-Templar War, so I'm not seeing why the developers would make her mandatory when she's far from neutral. That may not be the case, of course, but it seems like the developers are looking to put the player in a position to make the decisions this time. I'm getting the impression that a lot is being left up to how the player wants to handle things, including the recent news about the player having the option to deal with the Red Templars at the Highlands, or ignoring the area entirely.

If Cassandra and Varric are travelling together, they might both be neutral by the time they encounter the protagonist. I can see that as a means of avoiding stepping on the player's toes, if the two are mandatory companions.

Varric's always been more neutral, but I doubt Cass would be anything close to that at all. She'd follow you because it's the right thing to do, not necessarily because of her strong belief in the Chantry.

The fact that the player will have more freedom than in the past (which I approve of) doesn't mean that we won't be forced on certain things.
As I said, they might want to give us a mandatory companion from each class. With the news of the third mage companion and the more chances of getting Dorian (who might be the counterpoint of Vivienne), Solas might be the 'neutral' mage companion, but we don't know yet.
And we already have one likely mandatory companion who isn't neutral (Cassandra). We could very well get another one on the same mindset.

In DAO you could get rid of everyone that wasn't Alistair or Dog (if you started as a HN). I hope the same holds true for Inquisition don't need 1 forced player from every class if someone wants to gimp themselves they should be allowed to.

I'm fairly sure we'll have at least 1 mandatory mage companion to ensure party balance. And from what we've seen so far, I get the feeling that Vivienne might well be the first mage you recruit. Also, having people with different viewpoints in your party is a good way of getting different perspective on the events and groups in the game. I'd find it extremely boring if all my companions did was nod their heads and agree with my decisions all the time.

I don't dispute that, given that it's been said some companions will be mandatory, and even non-human protagonists are establishing an organization named after a human group that existed centuries ago. I simply get the strong impression that the developers are looking to establish a neutral feel for the Inquisition, given how the ancient group was re-written in WoT into a neutral organization, and the emphasis given on how the player will determine what the Inquisition is, and how people will respond to the new order.

As I said, they might want to give us a mandatory companion from each class. With the news of the third mage companion and the more chances of getting Dorian (who might be the counterpoint of Vivienne), Solas might be the 'neutral' mage companion, but we don't know yet.

Personally, I would prefer that it was done in the style of Origins (with a minimum of mandatory companions), but I suppose we will have to wait and see.

And we already have one likely mandatory companion who isn't neutral (Cassandra). We could very well get another one on the same mindset.

The crisis of faith mentioned with Cassandra made me think it may be possible that she may be "neutral" when she offers to be an ally to the Inquisitor, while Vivienne seems to have existing political ties and views that don't portray her in a neutral light. Again, I suppose we'll have to wait and see what happens in Inquisition.

@Lobsel: while they talked about Cassandra's crisis of Faith, they talked as well about her loyalty to the Chantry, and the fact that she's the Right Hand of the Divine.
I think that she'll start as loyal to the divine. Vivienne is Indeed pro-Circle, but she's not necessarily pro-Chantry. I think she's more loyal to Celene than Justinia.
And I agree on Ryzaki's idea (though Alistair can be dropped, even if it's near the end). I might not have been clear. With 'mandatory' I meant that you'll be forced to have her/another mage, not that you can't dismiss her later. Kind of like Morrigan.

The fact that it seems like we get Vivienne before we get our keep (isn't the mission from the gameplay footage with her the one where we secure our keep for the first time or am I making that up?) and she's been shown with the other two "primary" companions, who are likely to be mandatory, makes me think that, if there is a mandatory mage, it will be her.  Just a hunch though.

Regarding Vivienne's personality, I'm absolutely loving what we've seen of her.  I'm predicting her to be ostentatious and arrogant and fabulous.  I'm not convinced that my Inquisitor will get along well with her (I'll probably be on her side in the mage conflict, but I could easily see her being abrasive if we disagree on something else), but I'm really looking forward to seeing how she develops.  We've never really had a companion like her before, so I'm super excited about it.  Madame de Fer ftw!

Ah I wouldn't mind that. I could tell Morrigan to bounce as soon as I reached Lothering (and she was invisible when doing that convo with Alistair XD)

The mission at PAX in the Western Approah is about conquering one of the multiple keeps we can get in DAI. We already had on in Crestwood.
The main base is something else, which isn't present in either Crestwood or the WA.

I believe OXM or GameStar called it "Skyhold", and it's probably that Castle thing from a bunch of the concept arts.

Yeah, I think they might go that way.
I wonder if Cassandra and Varric can be dismissed.

I think so as well. The fact that they dubbed on of the concept 'A New Home' was kind of a big hint .

Yes, one more on Team Viv!

I am firmly Team Viv, Team Warden, and Team DHMG at this point.  Cass, Varric, and Solas seem a bit meh to me.  And I'm pretty sure I'm going to actively dislike Sera and Iron Bull.

I did that in Origins and Dragon Age II (although with different mindsets as to why with the two protagonists), which is why I've considered opting for a change this time in Inquisition. It's possible I'll change my mind once I'm actually playing as the Inquisitor, however, since how I plan things seldom results in how I end up playing the story. I imagine that there will be depth to all the potential companions.

All of them sound interesting. Except Sera. If she acts like in the survey, she's benched.

As for Viv, I'm cool with her, but one thing I will not tolerate is if she looks down upon the poor in Orlais or those that cannot help themselves. If that happens, I'll bench her in a heartbeat. I can't stand petty cruelty like that.
