The game is set in Orlais and Ferelden primarily, Fereldens are shown to have American accents in previous games, excepting Morrigan for some reason, and player characters in Inquisition will be able to choose between English and American accents. It stands to reason that the English accent will be associated with Orlais, thus effectively letting us choose the Inquisitor's nationality between the two.

It'd be a little weird for the Orlesian accent to suddenly change from French to English, but it'd certainly make the game more friendly to players who don't like French accents, myself included. I hope that's the case.

Actually, the culture with the most like American accents are the Dwarves apparently. Ferelden have the English accents, at least in DA2. DAO had no accents really whatsoever.

It's really only City Elves and Surface Dwarves who have American accents in Ferelden. Humans throughout Thedas have primarily English accents, one exception being Orlais where they have French accents.

Vivienne's English accent suggests she was not raised in Orlais, despite her appearance clearly depicts her as culturally Orlesian.

She was most likely transferred to the Orlais

I agree. Which I find incredibly interesting as it must have been a huge change for her. I think the fact she's clearly adapted so well and been able to succeed despite such odds shows enormous will and strength of character.

I associate the Dwarves with the Americans

The Dalish with the Irish

The Fereldens with the British

The Orlesians with the French

The Antivans with the Spanish

so why does Vivienne have a British accent?

She could have originated from Rivain and we really don't know what accent they use

I take it some people have never heard an American with a spanish accent (and no, they aren't all immigrants)? It's possible to have an accent separate from what's expected if you're used to speaking another language/dialect regularly at home or within your local community. (Edited to avoid confusion)

I recall David making a post on his tumblr about how they go about determining when to use accents. I'll see if I can find it but I think the bottom line is that they try to go for someone who can fit the appropriate accent when they can. However, it's easier sometimes to have the actor focus just on the performance and less on sounding English, French, etc.

I want trustworthy, reliable agents and advisors when I'm trying to save the world, thank you very much. Not only is your comment incredibly presumptuous and rude, not to mention poorly articulated, but it also completely misses the point. I liked Morrigan just fine, mostly because she was beautifully written, but one Morrigan is enough and the stakes are supposed to be higher this time. If your inquisitor doesn't take the mission seriously and surrounds him/herself with nutcases and extra-special snowflakes with no thought to actual effeciency then that's their headache, and yours too, I suppose.

How do you know she's not trustworthy? You've yet to come up with legitimate argument as to why you don't think she's trustworthy. Just because someone has their own aspirations, doesn't mean they're plotting to back stab you at every turn. That's absurd.

For the record, Vivienne isn't some "nut-case" she has a unique personality just like the rest of your crew will. Each and every one of them is going to have their own agenda and goals. If that upsets you, then feel free to kill off all of them apart from Varric and Cassandra because that's all you'll have left. Good luck  "saving the world" by your self because of your paranoia.

The two Rivaini people we know are Duncan and Isabela. Duncan's mixed, and I'm pretty sure he was raised in Ferelden, while Isabela grew up in Rivain. Since her accent is English, I assume all Rivaini people have English accents.

Okay. I found David's post about accents for those interested. It's not specifically about Vivienne's lack of an Orlesian accent but it contains details I think are relevant to that discussion.

I never realized what a big deal accents are! Well, Viv's sounds nice, even without the obvious French accent.

At first I though Vivienne would be all serious and a big snobbish but after watching new trailer and reading new interviews I started to think that she is actually pretty fun, sarcastic and tricksterious
Can't wait to see her in action

Yeah, I think it's mostly she's got a hard to crack shell and dry sense of humor.

I saw that smile in the latest trailer and to it became obvious that she still is a bit of a jester at heart. In a good way

The lack of info about her being available as a LI is not right.

Bioware should do the right thing and publish it now, will still get the game either way but we need to know.

She probably gets a kick out of subtly trolling the upper class while still getting their money, which I am entirely down with.

I think she will be serious, and pretty fun, sarcastic. I wonder how she will takes the compliments.

I was really disappointed that in the EA demo, we couldn't even have some lines from her, as it happened between Iron Bull and Sera. I badly want to hear her voice and how she interacts with other folks.

I can see what would please Sera and Cassandra, with my actions and decisions. So what do you think would make happy Vivienne from what we know so far ?

I suppose telling her how awesome she is to begin with ? Or does she consider it normal to say that and it doesn't affect her ?

Well, I wish Bioware would announce all the Lis at the same time with Cullen, Sera and Cassandra, as they did in the previous game. But it still remain a few months. In DAII we only knew one month before the release of the game who would be the LIs.

The fans Gaider speaks of are us. This conversation took place shortly after her announcement. But yes, I agree that she's probably one of the most interesting characters in Inquisition. I definitely want her as a romance more than any other character and I just can't wait to meet her fabulousness in game!

I realize I wasn't clear. I didn't talk about this quote from David gaider, but the fact that there are powerful people who are privileged enought to see our lovely mage and willing to offer her some gifts from an approved list made by Vivienne Herself. Since they are privileged to be that close to her, I suppose it's not only about power and influence, but also admiration.
