Honestly, Vivienne being ruthless is certainly not what could intimidate me. Actually, I love me a fierce woman.
That's what made me love Morrigan the most in DAO

Nah
It was the typical 'lesbian drama' ![]()
Speaking of Nyreen, I would love if her VA would be a voice in Inquisition. Either as a follower or the other female Inquisitor.
Who voiced Nyreen?
Here what I understood from those lines. Sentimentality means being lead by emotions like love, pity, nostalgia. Vivienne can't let those emotions lead her because otherwise survival can be more difficult in the political area, which is seen as an arena. She's also a mage, it's even worse. And she's right. The game in Orlais is ruthless. I think it means that Vivienne won't hesitate on the means if someone or a faction threats her. she will use any ruse, any trap, she will use all her power. She will destroy her enemy without pity because she has no choice if she wants to survive.
Yes, this. I was trying to say in more words than required.

Sumalee Montano

'd.
Why would she, an ambitious mage, join an organization that will have international influence and is the only thing that can stop an event that will destroy the world and everyone on it, including herself? Hmm, I wonder...
Mary's interview suggested that it was becuase the Inquisition is the only group doing something to stop the chaos in Thedas and restore order.

Nope. Nyreen was too soft for Omega. And that's why
Spoiler
That would mean she's too stiff for Omega then.

If Vivienne is the opposite of Morrigan that's already working in favor of what I think the former's motives are. I also feel that many are reading "..so long as that leaves her among those left standing, when all is said and done" as "so long as she's the only one left standing". One of those lines is more definitively about self preservation at all costs than the other. I think of it this way, ambitious people can't achieve jack if they're dead (goes for everyone but you get the point).
That's fair. Though I personally don't mind her personality; we've see so much of her character type (cold, pragmatic, self-serving) in a variety of medias that I've kind of become desensitized to that attitude. Plus I usually roleplay as a cold, calculating or outright brutish character (playing the complete opposite of my personality can be so fun!), so maybe that's also why I don't mind Viv.I don't like people who don't help those in need of it when they have the power to help them. Especially for such reasons as self-preservation.
Dammit. I really wanna cosplay a genderbent Vivienne for GaymerX.
This is the cutest cosplay idea. Do eet!

Do you play as yourself in these games?
That's fine. Not saying people have to not like her. I'm sure she has her redeeming qualities. Just haven't seen them yet.

Haha I didn't intend to give the impression that you did. And I'm sure she does too. Hopefully. That's fine. Not saying people have to not like her. I'm sure she has her redeeming qualities. Just haven't seen them yet.

I know you didn't. Just felt like saying that. ![]()
I believe it's the order before the tear in the sky.
Which completely sucked. The only order I can permit is a new one.
Cree Summer comes in mind........
"With great power comes great responsibility." - Ben Parker
She seems to like to ignore the second part.
One of the harder parts of having responsibility is not letting compassion dictate your actions. Doubly so when you are in a position of authority of groups: leaders who let immediate concerns and empathy dominate their policy are the ones who vindicate the saying 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions.' And that's without factoring in the adage of experience that 'sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.'
Of course, without specific context this is all rather vague and nebulous. Considering how little we know about her and have seen her in practice, I honestly don't know what you're thinking of to claim what she 'seems' like. The letter slam to the ambassador?
I mean, sure, there are people who think the previous status quo was irredeemable and anyone who stands by it is immoral and irresponsible. I didn't think you were one of them, though, and short of that it would take knowing Vivienne's viewpoints and rationalizations to tell if she is acting with responsibility.

Furthermore, I don't really think I agree all that much with the phrase you quoted. Especially not within the framework of a speculative fiction setting. There is a difference between "All right, we elected you major. Now, don't get all comfy and stuff, this job comes with responsibilities" and "Wow, you've gained a lot of money from that book sale. Now is clearly your responsibility to use it for a worthy cause!" not to mention "Oh, damn, you got bitten by a spider. Now don't be lazy, it's your duty to risk your life and use all those fancy superpowers to help random strangers who won't ever know who your are. For. The. Rest. Of. Your. Life" or its more DA friendly version "Maker's breath, you survived the giant hole in the sky! And you got a tattoo too! Now go and save the world, hmm? No pressure".
I don't think we'll know Vivienne's "true agenda" or how she feels about stuff until, y'know, the game. I'm happy to be interested and she how she turns out, rather than just reject her out of hand based on her 'public' image and my assumptions of what out-of-context quotes might really mean.
For Vivienne's case, I've seen a lot of No True Scotsman fallacy behind criticism of her politics. It generally goes along the lines of 'She supports the Circles, where she had a position of power and influence? She can't be thinking of the mages. No true mage-' insert general 'what a true good mage must believe.'

Yes, it's all "she supports the things I don't like - she must be EEEEVIL!" rather than actually asking what it is about the Circle system that she supports, and why.
There's more to it than "she obviously wants to enslave all mages under the thumb of the Templars, under orders from a tyrannical Chantry because... she.... enjoys being enslaved herself? Or... she wants to be the biggest enslaved fish in the... enslavement pond? ...I haven't thought this through have I?"
