As a black person I ask...Does it even matter?

Thank you for answering, please just focus on making her an interesting character.

I think it matters, if only from the standpoint that a lot of people enjoy seeing greater diversity among the characters.

I would imagine the new engine might do a little better job of rendering darker skintones, and I hope Bioware takes advantage of that, not only in their character designs but also the CC.

There's diversity and then there's token characters that's just for diversity sake. The later is worse then have no diversity at all. It shouldn't be  about forcing diversity. A character there should not be there to be diverse, the character should be well done and just happen to be diverse. A good character who happen to be black not a character is all about being black.

Well, for me, goodbye Vava, but Vivi, yep, she's already in my team.  B)

What happen if she turns on the sass and get under you skin with her "I'm better then everyone "attitude?

Bioware never did that. Not even with Jacob.

Yes, I definitely agree with this ^.I for one very much like to see diversity among our companions!Unique looks and personalities among the characters are always refreshing!

I'm already aware of what could be her personality and I'm not at all afraid of that. My LI were Ashley, Miranda, Morrigan... I loved anora. This isn't what could ****** me off.I don't even hate Petrice, actually I quite like her.

I despise only stupid, irrational, naïve female characters, and she doesn't seem that way at all. So do not worry about me.

Someone cared enough to post about it a few years back.

But after further reading, it appears that there are no black people anywhere at all on Thedas. Not the Qunari, who are arab/mediterranean, and certainly not the Chasind, who  seem more like Native Americans. So, it's not like this is something they could explore in a future expansion.

David Gaider wrote...I think what you're looking for is in Rivain. The Rivaini are dark-skinned, and while I don't know if we'll ever actually go to Rivain the further north we travel the more common a sight the Rivaini will become. Sorry you felt left out.

I guess I don't see how Vivienne could be a "token" character.  She's a kickass mage that happens to have darker skin.  If her personality is one that'll mesh with mine, then she'll be on my team quite a bit.

Knowing the Bioware modding community there will be mods to turn her white within an hour of release, just like with Isabella.

Ok, so she is, "officially," Rivaini. Makes sense.

The first thing I thought when I saw her "iconic" outfit is that she stepped right out of a Mardi Gras parade.

From what I've heard, she's a pro-Circle mage, so that should be interesting, whether I'm siding with mages or templars.

What I'd really like to know about her right now is her specialization.  If we also learn about her background (as a Rivaini or otherwise), that will be icing.

One more reason for me to like her if it's true.  :)

Who cares?

As long as her race fits into DA lore, which Rivaini does, though I was unaware just how dark they can get, I have no problems

Hmm,Until now the majority of the mages we had in our party (except Wynne), were opposed to the circle system. Vivienne will definitely provide an interesting viewpoint on it and why she supports it.

Pretty much. Although Bioware participated in that white washing.

Was Isabela a token of "forced diversity"?

Bioware excels at creating interesting, deep, rich characters.  I don't believe there is any reason to think that a character would be any less just because they wear a darker skintone.

If I were a developer or someone instrumental to creating her character and there was a mod to change her skin color, I think I'd be pretty insulted. Same were I a person of color myself. We're really going to whitewash this game? Is that necessary to ensure enjoyment?

Neither of you guys have to worry to much about that, at least for awhile.  Frostbite 3 isn't a very mod friendly engine and BW also said that they aren't releasing a toolkit upon release (if they do at all.)  So, unless the modders get really creative, that won't happen for a long time.

Briefly off-topic: As much as the lighter-skinned mods for Isabela disturbed me, it didn't as much as the "Romance Bethany" mods I ran into.  <_<

I think the 'lighter skin tone' might have more to do with the fact that Isabella was white in Origins. Not that it matters anyway. Some people think of it as continuity. I prefer her dark though, gives her that exotic look, plus, she's a pirate and always under the sun. Even if she were white you'd think she would have copper skin.

While that may be, I'd prefer to simply keep the discussion relevant (and more positive) which is, I think at this point, just a thread about Vivienne.

EDIT: I think it'd be good to not deviate too much about what the mod community will or will not do with Vivienne (or other characters).

@Sim Ah, but Isabela wasn't white.  She was darker skinned, if you look at her standalone model.  The crappy lightning in the Pearl is what gave her a lighter appearance.

@Kaiser: There is three of them.

On topic: I'm looking forward to "meeting" Vivienne.  She seems fun and full of spunk.  After last game with the too-crazy Anders and the too-naive Merrill, Vivi will be a breath of fresh air.  Plus, she actually makes those silly fashions from Orlais look good!
