I think this sassy mage looks fabulous! I don't believe we'll be able to romance her though?

Wasn't she in the running for becoming Head Enchantress for a Circle in Orlais? Now we know that for some reason, she joins the Inquisition, but she might want to return to the Circle (or a newer version) once most conflicts (The Veil Rip, Elven Rebellion, etc.) are solved. She seems like the lady who puts her career, imago and professional relations before her own pleasure and relationships.

My guess is that Cassandra and Sera will be the female companions who might engage in a romance.

Cassandra fits that description as well, and they both are associated with very strict organizations, that discourage the formation of any kind of personal relation between the members. So If Cass is a possible LI then there's still hope for our Fab Vivienne to be one as well.

Nah, Vivienne's just waiting for someone like me.  :D

Cassandra's a fine alternative, though.  :)

Right now I'm just picturing this:

Vivienne: ...and I shall require a squire.

Inquisitor: Might I ask why?

Vivienne: To assist me with my wardrobe. Normally I'd have a group of apprentices managing it, but I am willing to make certain concessions.

Inquisitor: Couldn't you just dress yourself?

Vivienne: I am an Enchanter of the Orleasian court, not some trussed-up Ferelden swamp witch. Clearly, you have no sense of style.

Inquisitor: (muttering under his breath) Thank the Maker for that.

Also, if they brought back the Feast Day Pranks DLC for Inquisition Vivienne should get a pair of fuzzy nug slippers.

I'm sorry, and I don't intend to start a fight... but for the life of me, I can't understand why any of what was just revealed is a positive trait. I mean, maybe she has an interesting fashion sense, but her personality is turning me the hell off.

Badass and uncompromising is fine; Anders and Aveline are both characters I loved. But the twist to the style that Vivienne puts on it strikes me as utterly repulsive.

I get where you're coming from; I can't stand elitism and classism. She sounds like a snot. But there will be more to her; she isn't going to be a one dimensional character. In fact, I think she's going to be pretty complicated. I'm looking forward to getting to know her and see what kind of dynamic she has with others, particularly my Inquisitor. How well does she take orders, for one, is something I'm dying to find out.  :P

I can't speak for everyone else, but I find the idea of characters who are seemingly disagreeable more interesting. I don't want to play a game where everyone I'm forced to work with is my best pal. So Vivienne being a bit caustic makes her sound more interesting to me. I suppose I also anticipate her being less shallow once you get to know her, but who knows.

I guess it could be interesting, I just always detest these characters who are in stories and are arrogant and obnoxious, but are also on the side of good so the protagonist can't just kill them. And I have this horrible feeling she'll be like that. Maybe I'm wrong; I hope that I'm wrong.

Yea I'm with you on this. Currently not a fan of the description they give her. I'm hoping her characters arch is to get less snooty. Or else that she's just really funny when she insults people.

Mages really don't have any standing in most societies in Thedas, they really don't have much beyond their staff and the robes on their back.

Vivienne's managed to work her way up the ranks to the point where she has the ear of the empress and a position of authority in the Circle. She might be living in a bit of a gilded cage but she gets to dress and act like nobility.

The war between Gaspard and Celene has caused the Orlesian court to crumble and Fiona's rebellion has pretty much dissolved the Circle. Suddenly, Viv doesn't have the status she once had, she's not Madame de Fer anymore she's just a mage and the idea of that terrifies her. So by keeping the arrogance and the trappings of her life in court Vivienne can at least attempt to hide the insecure side of herself.

Just a thought.

You can't read a book by it's cover.

Or it's character blurb.

I'm feeling positively about her, despite a natural distaste for arrogant elitists, because of an article I read a while back, particularly a quote by Luke Kristjanson (link provided below). In talking about Vivienne he says, "That is a character that has a very specific view on the role of circles and the Chantry....As someone who is extremely pro-circle, what is left for that person when the entire system crumbles?" Vivienne's entire identity is dependent on this system's existence. She's like a species of animal that is going extinct as its evolutionary niche disappears. How does one, especially one as forceful and prideful as Vivienne, face such vulnerability?

These are my impressions anyway, but I find that tidbit compelling. I also think it appears to be a story arc that can satisfy both those who love to love *and* love to hate her. I hope that, whether you end up liking her or not, you can still enjoy her character.

And here is the link. It is a section of the article linked by the Everything Dragon Age tumblr: http://dragonaging.t...s-new-companion

What is left for that person when the entire system crumbles ? How does one, especially one as forceful and prideful as Vivienne, face such vulnerability ?

Well, you adapt to the new situation. You redefine yourself, your purpose and move on. Ultimately, you try to create an identity that is not dependent on niches or on notions such as pride.

I have almost always played as a mage in a fantasy RPG and when it comes to Dragon Age, the first encounter with the Pride demon in the Fade during my Warden's Harrowing left quite a big impression when the demon itself says that the real dangers of the Fade (& I guess magic itself) is preconceptions, careless trust and pride....

I hope Vivienne, at least tries to adapt to the new situation and change throughout the game because being prideful, arrogant, forceful and obnoxious is not a big problem. The problem only comes when one stays prideful, arrogant, forceful, obnoxious and refuses to change when the whole world is undergoing a massive change.

Exactly. I don't understand why her evidently prideful nature is being shows as a positive thing.

If I did not forget my DAO, I recall the Pride Demon from my mage Warden Harrowing saying :- Simple killing is a warrior's job. The real dangers of the Fade are preconceptions, careless trust and pride...."

So doesn't that mean mages should not be..well..prideful or it can lead to their downfall ?

While the questions I wrote were rhetorical, you're basically correct: You adapt or you perish. And adaptation is no small feat. The conclusion might be simple but the work is not. I'm interested to see how Vivienne responds and how she deals with it. It appears that, for her, this global crisis is also deeply personal.

Sorry for the double post, I only just saw this. That is INTERESTING. I hadn't thought of that. I'm actually replaying Origins as a mage right now so the Harrowing is fresh in my mind. I wonder if there will be a demon somewhere in her story arc...

Despite claims of character customization, I have a feeling that Vivienne's headdresses -along with Varric's crossbow- will be off limits.

I think Bioware devs confirmed that Varric can be equipped with daggers.

I think she can be dismissable or killed. Though I don't understand your point: characters on the good side can't be arrogant and obnoxious?
Regardless, we have nine companions. It's normal that we might not like some of them (though so far I'm interested in all the companions announced/rumoured).

I think one of each class will not be dismissable, perhaps we can kill them later in the game though.

In one of old discussion of BSN I remember a thread that devs said they will not make everyone dismissable again like they did on DAO, all except Alistar. Since Alistar was useful and the only starting character with tank stats they decided to make three characters like that in DA2, namely "essential" characters. Hence we have Avelive, Varric and Anders. We have no way of not recruiting them and they are slightly easier to use than rest of the companions. Anders + Varric + Aveline + whatever class Hawke is a successful team and can easily beat the game without any additional characters.

So possibly Cassandra and Varric are essential companions and we lack a mage in that combination. Its most likely Vivienne.

Game ain't even out yet and she's already my favorite character. Can't wait for her insufferable diva antics! My Inquisitor will have a ball dragging her through the mud lol. Yep agree completely. I'm never going to like every character and I'm happy with that. I'm excited about other 2 revealed but assuming I'll often have a more fractious relationship with Vivienne based on description.

I think Vivienne looks great ...not too fond of the white/black outfit.

I like the golden one better.

I'm not sure if my Inquisitor , well my first Inquisitor , is going to get along with her.

If she looks down on people and thinks peasents are disgusting etc...Well as long as she isn't cruel about it , I can somewhat tolerate that .

But I like the fact that she's pro Circle and just not humble.

Usualy pro circle people looked a bit "tamed " , She seems very proud.

I hope she's a little more than  an exotic bird in a golden cage.

I'm looking forward to meet her and know her story.

Did she get some freedom working with the Orlesians nobility , and is now pro circle because she managed to break the system?

Meaning from her position , things are dandy and she's also looking down at other mages.

Or maybe she really cares and just like Wynne , she tried to make thing better for everyone by playing the Game?

And the mage "revolution" ruined everything?

If she's the kind of woman who use her wits , and take care of her ennemies without bloodshed , I can respect that.

For now , I think she will sometimes annoys me ( as long as my Inquisitor can laugh at her a bit , I don't mind), but overall I think she might turn up to be a good ally .
