I think the 'lighter skin tone' might have more to do with the fact that Isabella was white in Origins. Not that it matters anyway. Some people think of it as continuity. I prefer her dark though, gives her that exotic look, plus, she's a pirate and always under the sun. Even if she were white you'd think she would have copper skin.

Actually, she had a dark skintone in Origins, too.

ETA:  Between her background and being a pro-circle mage, I think she'll prove to be a very interesting character.

Thank you for answering, please just focus on making her an interesting character.

Sadly, it was too late in production and Mary had already done her best to make her an uninteresting character. If only they'd been warned sooner...

She wasn't white; dark skin tones were horrible in Dragon Age: Origins.

Isn't that assumption kinda of wrong, I mean that she is Rivaini. You are assuming that color of skin as anything to do with the place you live, like it is a rule.

Well they did it quite a bit in DA2

In a world where transportation infrastructure is well... nonexistent it would be unusual to see such skin tones in an area with a climate similar to Europe, which is what Ferelden and Orlais are iirc

Except mages/templars can be sent to different circles.

I believe he is referring to the belief that because it's based on "Medieval" times it means that no one travels at all. Of course people did travel in actual Medieval times, but people don't like to be reminded of that.

You don't see mass movements of people easily until the development of railways, there are still migrations and such of course, I didn't mean to imply everyone is stuck where they are born, even though most would be.

Yes because Mages and Templars make up such large %'s of the population.....

Humans only came to Thedas a couple of thousand years ago. There were dark skinned people in Europe for ~38,000 years.

Unless I'm mistaken, Rivain is a rather progressive country with some strong nautical ties.  Between Rivain and Antiva,  I always thought of them as the Thedas version of the Moors.  The Moors did travel into much of Europe, so Rivain having mainly darker skin than much of Thedas made total sense to me.

It's sad, but I expect to seeing White Vivienne mods soon after DA:I's release.

It seems to me an interesting character, though circle pro still not sure if we'll get along,on the other hands looks like powerful mage

I'm not saying that its utterly impossible for there to be dark skinned people in Orlais or Ferelden, I'm saying those people would be the exceptions

Neither of you guys have to worry to much about that, at least for awhile.  Frostbite 3 isn't a very mod friendly engine and BW also said that they aren't releasing a toolkit upon release (if they do at all.)  So, unless the modders get really creative, that won't happen for a long time.

Briefly off-topic: As much as the lighter-skinned mods for Isabela disturbed me, it didn't as much as the "Romance Bethany" mods I ran into.  <_<

nothing wrong with a bit of sisterly love.

The Viking got to the Americas even before any train and who knows who before that. Also I live in Europe and I know my history and believe me boats are great!

Yeah and they were there for a few years before promptly running back across the North Atlantic, the Greenland froze over and most of the people left there died.

I AM NOT SAYING ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND THE CONTINENT, EVEN IN MASSE.

All I am saying is that I would find it implausible to run across a sizable population of dark skinned people in the middle of a region equivalent roughly to France or England

She is black, you can see it from the demo.

So what does that make her ? A Rivaini ? An Orlesian with Rivaini heritage ?

Just curious what her voice will sound like. Will it sound Orlesian or Fereldan or Black ?

That does look like a lightning issue because her face skin tone is darker than her body

Was it the part where I said I wasn't concerned about seeing populations move, or the part about England and France that confused you?

@sim The lightning is really that crappy.  I'm looking for a picture of her standalone model, and I'll let you know if I find it.  If you have a model editor, go check it out for yourself.

I'm not saying that its utterly impossible for there to be dark skinned people in Orlais or Ferelden, I'm saying those people would be the exceptions

That makes no sense. Humans have been in Thedas for a couple thousand years; they came from the north, which is closer to the equator. 'Whiteness' in the real world took about 38,000 years to develop. If anything, the majority of people in Thedas should be dark skinned.

That they have pale skin suggests 1) the developers didn't realize how long it takes for that phenological trait to manifest and spread in a population or 2) that some tribes were already white and they just happened to settle in specific areas.

In either case, the skin coloring of people in Orlais seems to be based on authorial desire. Unless you know what the authors want, how can you say what's exceptional and what's not?
