A no-nonsense and sharp-tongued mage is reminding me a lot of Morrigan, my second favorite Origins character.

I may not think Vivienne is attractive, but holy damn do I think her personality is sounding good.

It does sound like vivi but vivi also adds classy to that equation. I wonder how the duality of the dialogue is going to be since morrigan hates the order and vivi wants to restore it.

Well, the first enchanters in all games seem to be able to do what they want, pretty much, with Orsino ranting about Meredith in the middle of Kirkwall unaccompanied by Templars and Irving going to Redcliffe in Origins.

It's why I don't fully understand the mage rebellion. For a system that is supposedly so limiting it seems that the mages who really want to earn more freedom through working with the system do generally manage to achieve it.

It depends. Each tower is different, and sits somewhere on the spectrum between conservative and more liberal. And we still don't know the circumstances by which Vivienne was raised to First Enchanter or how she managed to find her way into the Imperial Court.

I would love a confrontation between Morrigan and Vivienne.

*evil cackle* Xil is definitely gonna have a field day with this.

Xil may pose the question of whether or not Vivienne can be persuaded to change her mind.

Frankly, if Vivienne is opposed to the mage rebellion, I'm wondering how long she will remain at the Inquisitor's side if the protagonist supports mage autonomy, or why she thinks a Dalish or Vashoth Inquisitor would want to restore the status quo in the first place.

Frankly, I think she's going to see that being on the side of the Inquisitor will be the "winning side", which seems to be what she supports above all.

It'd depend on the circumstances that lead her to join the Inquisitor.

Montsimmard, the Circle where she's from, must be extremely liberal, to allow her such leeway.

Screw the Circle, those templars have got to be incompetent or something

Indeed, it's interesting, since they are at the height of Chantry power, and yet they would allow a mage to have such political clout and influence.

This is a plus for me cause if I am playing mages, I  usually play mages in support of the chantry. First playthrough is definitely a reaver qunari with an imperialist influence though.

So put in the group who finds her to be incredibly beautiful.  She really is gorgeous, but I would really love to get a glimpse under the hat.  I can't decide if I would rather her be bald underneath or not.

I am loving her character.  To me, she sounds like the type of character who understands and thrives in political intrigue (like Dangerous Liasons).  She sounds so unique that I'm really getting excited about her.  I have a feeling that my goody-goody inquisitor (which is always how I end up playing my canon playthrough) is going to bump heads with her, but I'm excited to see how her story will proceed.

Didn't we already hear that Morrigan was the Court Mage?  How will she and Vivienne interact?  I could imagine them absolutely despising each other and loving every second of their intrigue.

After reading that new little description of Vivienne...

I like her a million times more now. I think I might end up liking her more than Cassandra, who's like my 2nd favorite character in the Dragon Age universe. Viv seems like such a fabulous badass lady. She won't take any crap from anyone, not even the Inquisitor. Hope my Quizzy can match her level of fabulous badassery, or at least come close.

I also think her reasons for being anti-rebellion will be interesting.

Another thing, appearance may not be everything, but OMG she's gorgeous.

Really interested in seeing what her hair looks like, though. I'd imagine it's really short, can't see her being bald.

So she's either a blood mage controlling them or other powerful players to keep them off her (unlikely)

She isn't widely known to be a mage (unlikely)

BioWare is yet again playing fast and loose with its own canon (very likely)

Um, Morrigan was reported to be in the court, but not necessarily as the Court Mage. That title seems to belong to Vivienne alone. In that regard, I do think the two have crossed paths before, but I don't think Viv would know that Morrigan is a mage.

It depends on your opinion about the mage freedom, I suppose. I would wait to see her views, in say, a Chantry/templar free circle.

Court mages are very much an established part of the setting. It was one of the more desirable positions a mage could get because it allowed a degree of autonomy from the circle and the possibility for influence.

Viveinne simply maneuvered herself in to the most desirable court mage position one could get; that of the court of the Empress of Orlais.

I'm very curious to find out what those circumstances are. I can understand her reasons if she sees the Inquisitor as the only means of dealing with the veil tears, since the threat endangers everyone, but if it's about the mage rebellion, then I think she's do a double-take upon seeing a Vashoth or Dalish Inquisitor at the helm of this growing military and political power (with both racial options being raised in societies without templar control).

As such I'd imagine the templars would have her under strong supervision lest she corrupt the empress,  not letting her run around smashing her opponents

You would think no?

Having a mage within spitting distance of one of the most powerful people in the world, would warrant a Templar or two no?

Apparently not. And yet, we have not seen her at court yet, so it could very well be possible that she has templars escorting her.

Maybe I read it incorrectly, but it read to me that she "smashes" her opponents using guile, deceit, and political maneuvering.  I don't see anything that suggests that she uses her magic to influence or manipulate anyone.  I read it as her just being very skilled in court intrigue.

Nah, there's nothing to worry about. What's the worse that can happen? So maybe she controls the Empress with blood magic to do her bidding, big deal..

Celene isn't Viscount Dumar. She's not going to let templars dictate what goes on in her court; if she wants to let a mage run about as she will, that mage is going to run about and do as she will.

Does it matter how she does it, and how she has ammassed power?

She is a mage within arms reach of the empress, and has a reputation for ruthlessness.  The Knight-Commander of her Circle should be ashamed, then executed.

And this isn't the Freemarches

This is Oralis the seat of power of the Chantry in THEDAS, note that distinction, this isn't Kirkwall seat of Templar power in the East.

This is the Seat of Templar/Chantry Authority in the continent.

Celene wouldn't risk upsetting people who can easily declare her to be unfit for rule.

Assumic the emperors of Orlais haven't established an agreement with the Chantry to be able to have a mage in the court. The KC could do nothing in that case.
