Given what we've been told about her I'm kind of picturing Viv as being the DA equivalent of Miranda (minus the genetic engineering). She's not exactly the nicest person at first, and the organization she supports isn't exactly popular, but she might make some good points.

I suspect that, as Inquisitor, you will go to the Orlesian court seeking political clout. The Empress will send you on some merry quest against Gaspard or whatever his name is, or send you to sway the elves to her side. Either way, she will assign you her court Mage to assist you and monitor your progress.

This is how you will acquire Vivienne, who otherwise would probably have no desire to go traipsing off with such a common looking soldier.

Though iirc DA2 had Fenris and Isabela as optional, but without them my squad build would be pretty crappy :/

Most likely - I'm pretty sure it was mentioned somewhere that most of the companions in Inquisition will be optional.

I think it would make sense for the companions to be optional, rather than mandatory. I'm sure it was weird for pro-templar players to be railroaded into accepting apostates into their group as Hawke, even though they may have preferred otherwise.
