Lovely lady to begin with.
I like how she teases us !
And... since I don't want to sound superficial, I would say that.... I love her hat too lol.

A mage with active ties to their family (outside of Bethany) would be quite welcome.

Well, we did have Morrigan, Merrill, and Velanna have contact with their family. It's just in all three cases they hated each other. ![]()
Okay, how healthy ties to their family? None of the lovely ladies mentioned had very healthy family ties, or at least not by the time we meet them.
@Elder: Hmm, since "The Game" is still in effect for Orlais, and if Vivienne's family is noble and has power, it's possible that she stayed fairly close to them. I will be the first to admit that this idea is unlikely. Prior to the Annulments of the Circles, Rivain looked to be the only place where mages were treated pretty normally. Something the Chantry took issue with, but I digress.
You know, thinking about it further, it doesn't have to be a blood family. Vivi could talk about those in the Circle that were like her family, and have fond memories of them. Mention them by name, things like that. It would be a refreshing change, that's for sure.
The only thing I'm upset about is that I found out that Vivienne is a companion in the first place, I just would have preferred to experience that fresh in the game. I think knowing a companion beforehand dilutes the experience a bit and sets weird expectations.
I'm probably going to avoid this board altogether when info starts flowing again.

That's probably for the best, if you're trying to avoid spoilers. <hug>
More seriously, I don't need more information, I love everything about her so far, I just need some snippets until the release. But I wont talk much in details about them. Speculation never was my thing. I just wait without thinking much.
But, after the release, and once I'm done with the next game, you can be sure to find me in a character thread about Vivienne, 50 lines for each of my post lol.

I have yet to hit a character thread, but between her and Varric, I might see you there.
I'm already excited about the three companions we know about. I squeed out loud when I saw Varric from the PAX footage. And yes, my dear husband teased me a little for it too. ![]()
Haha, thanks. I could probably deal if people were discreet but as soon as a character is revealed, they've got ten threads announcing their inclusion two seconds later. I enjoy the feeling of not knowing who could join up with you as it makes certain quests and scenarios less predictable. ;D
I'm loving Vivienne's design regardless. It just good to finally see a darker coloured skin tone rendered properly in engine, hopefully it translates well to the CC too.
She is allergic to Fereldan fashions. And there's nothing she dreads getting as a Wintersend present because she arranges for those privileged enough to see her for the holidays to select gifts for her from an approved list. Also her shoes are an amazing array of gold-encrusted boots made from rare animals, and possibly the skins of one or two of her political rivals.

Well I hit only character threads about characters I really love. I am very interested to see what has become Varric. I love his new face.
Cassandra, I don't know what to think since Dawn of Seeker to be honest ! XD There, I need more information lol.
But Vivienne, yep, you'll see me. I hope so !
I'm interested to learn more about her, but as it stands my favorite female companion is still Cassandra.
Consider that she's well known in the Orlesian court, enough that she has her own nickname. She might've frequented the court a lot. The mages in Orlais that rose through the ranks might've reached different conditions than the ones in Kirkwall and Ferelden (well, at lead pre-Anders, since After that the templars strenghtened the control same reduced the mages' freedoms).

I like Cassandra and I'm looking forward to learning more, but she's been in the previous game (granted, we didn't get to know her much) as well as other media in the EU. Vivienne is brand new, so that's why I'm excited about learning more about her.
And with Varric...he's my bud. He is my favorite character that BioWare has ever done. I haven't played all of BW's games (I haven't played Jade Empire nor the Mass Effect series,) but he is my all time favorite. I used to have a banner with him on it, but the new format prevents that (note to self: Go into the help forums and ask why.)
The first three companions are off to a fine start, imho.
@Elder: Huh, there isn't a lot of info available on Vivi, so I didn't know that. Makes sense though and she probably did have contact with her family prior to the events of Kirkwall.
When it came to the Circle mages, I simply meant "you" as a general term. They were treated more like ordinary people in Rivain than in most Circles. I wasn't trying to make a statement about the Circles themselves, since that's a topic that only causes frustration. I was only trying to state that Rivain appeared to be the only one that would allow mages to have family contacts.
I'm not pro-Mage or pro-Templar, I'm pro-Compromise. Hence the first line of my signature. ![]()
Edit: I finally found the avatar that I'm going to be using more often. I knew it was buried in my pics folder, somewhere...
I'm the same

Ah, great to meet ya. We seem to be a pretty rare breed here on the forums. ![]()

Explains why we can have a civil discussion about a mage character, for once. ![]()
She must be Rivaini. And I have to say that makeup weirdo hat put me off. Hopefully her garments are customizable in DAI
I'm surprised by all the irritation at the existence of mods people disagree with.
People are concentrating a lot on her ethnicity, but what I find equally fascinating is the land she comes from. Rivain does not believe in Andraste et all, gets along well with elves, and has Qunari (with a more brutal attitude towards mages). You would think a girl who was from there with magical ability would be more of the independent type.
I'd be very interested to hear how she became a circle sympathizer since the basis of the circle is rooted in Andrastian principles of magic must serve man.
She could not be from Rivain at all. She could be a child of a mage that was raised in The Circle of Orlais, just as Rhys from what we know about her.
Actually, I had a theory (spoilers from the books ) a long time ago that she could be Duncan's love child with a mage girl from The Circle of Ferelden.
@who From what I gathered, equipping the companions with various armor will vary their look. I don't think there's going to be a way to change it completely.

She doesn't have to be ethnically Rivaini. Just because darker skinned Thedosians tend to come from Rivain doesn't necessarily mean that they all hail from there.

I don't talk about it too much, unless someone else brings it up. Other than the Bethany mod (which makes my brain go WHY GOD, WHY?!?) to each their own.

We are more than it seems. Expecially because there are some Pro-mages and Pro-templars that want a compromise as well.
