Improved Tactical Control Ideas for Mass Effect 4

The tactical control of your squad in ME 1 to 3 was ok if you had time to set them up before you were attacked, but on the fly the line of sight click and go was lacking. At times I would spend half the fight trying to position my squad into cover and often having to break my own cover to position a squad member.

Idea 1 – Be able to pause the game and go into a limited overhead view to position squad members. Very similar to DAO. Once out of tactical view you are back into third person and the squad members move to their ordered positions. This would be a fast and user friendly way to go.

Idea 2 – Pause the game and chose a squad member to control, while the game is paused you move that squad member’s “ghost” (just like to would with your character) to the position you want it to take while in this mode you could even check their field of fire. When the game is un-paused you are back into your character and the ordered squad member moves to the designated position. This would be slower but would give you the greatest control over your squad.

Waypoints and other functions could be incorporated into both ideas.

Does anyone have any of their own ideas on how ME 4 could improve tactical control?

Ideally the game should never have to be paused.

But the line of sight click and go system used is useless half the time.

I think they need to work on the squad AI because in a lot of situations they do stupid stuff. Instead of tactical overview they could bring out something scifi and in-game like a omni-tool tactical map or something that for a few seconds slows down the time and lets you give commands to your squaddies.

id love for tactical TP "squad" shooter rather then make the game about one person make it about a crew and allow you to jump between control of your party rather just use their powers remotely.

I'm not sure about any of those ideas. and call me a cheap b*****d, but I actually like the pause feature.

Pause is not a bad feature, I just use it very rarely. i am more of direct combat person.

Better AI would be the best... But getting AI right is very difficult no doubt.

And didn't we have pause when you wanted to use the "skill wheel" in EVERY games? So it's not something unheard of. You could use the powers/move squad mates in this "pause" mode. But I guess you mean the line of sight commanding, right?

I guess you could be moving the camera higher in the "pause" mode.

I just don't think this is the right style of game to be pausing. I would get rid of it altogether. However having settable tactics like in DA2 could be something worth doing. Telling Wrex to Biotic Charge nearest enemy when his shields hit 0, for Jack to Shockwave anything that is Biotically primed  or Javik to throw a lift grenade when 3 or more enemies are clustered could be pretty cool. On the other hand it could be overpowered and make the game too easy or too hard for people who dont set them.

I might be alone here, but the tactical aspect of The Bureau (that other Xcom game)Was probably the best part of it. I would love something like that.

Eh, honestly - I rarely, if ever, use the Tactical UI.

I'm not saying get rid of it, it's a great feature, but I only really use it if I'm on Insanity and really panicking about a situation and need a second to think about where to move before I get killed. Most of the time I just go with the flow and make it up as I go along.

Something like this then?

I would love to have more tactical options. I always play using the squad. I choose when they will use their powers and try to position them (Throwing grunt in the middle of the enemies in ME2 was great). What I think ME4 need to improve is to give us more control over how the AI will go somewhere, or at least make them smarter. It`s is a common issue for me when I ask the squad to go to a specific cover, them they choose a completely weird route to get there, which completely kill my tactics (or they die or they get there too late).

It could have a advanced tactical options. I would love, for example, to tell to my squad before the fight: "go to cover A, kill enemy 1 then move to cover B", or "go to cover A, use singularity on enemy 1 then engage enemy 2". This would be awesome, I could set the squad to keep enemies busy or deal with specific enemies, them go do my thing. Even if it isn't something complex, at least make the AI more responsive, mostly when shooting. Using squad powers work wonderfully, but asking them to shoot a specific enemy isn't responsive enough.

For people that don't use it, it wouldn't hurt to have this kind of feature, it's optional, you can just ignore it and play like a normal shooter. For me, one of the things that made me love so much the franchise was to play as a squad, try to make strategies, flank the enemy, this kind of things, insteady of just run and shoot, mostly now that we already have this experience on the MP, it's nice to do something different in the SP. I would love to be able to be really tactical with ME.

I would like the tactical control we had in DA:Origins, so that we could choose what situations warrant what weapons and powers because sometimes they keep using powers on enemies that are immune and its just wasteful. Or try to engage a mech while not in cover.

Pause is very important if you ask me in a game with multiple companions.  Until they come up with much more robust ways of your companions acting pause is a must for me.

I actually found it better that we can't "leave Shepard's body" in Mass Effect. I am playing Shepard and I am always Shepard. I can only give orders from my perspective and I can only perceive the battlefield as Shepard does.

Yes, there are some limitations there, due to the fact that it's a video game and just an audio-viasual experience but IMO, the ability to pause compensates for this well enough.

I'd rather identify with Shepard/the protagonist (whoever that may be in the next ME) than zoom out and play Dragon Age in space.

It could stay Shepard's perspective only, but they need to figure out a way to make the AI go where we wan't it to go and do what we want it to do, with a timing that we can plan on it. For example, it's annoying when you want they to go to a cover but they take a ridiculously s-tupid route and by the time they get there your planning already failed, this when they don't exposed themselves and die. If they fix this route issue, I will already be very pleased. Even better if they figure out a way to somehow allow me to choose how they will go to the cover (maybe drag a line with the mouse?).

See Pressedcat's post above (quotes are not working in my PC)

I was thinking of something with a bit more control. Eg. You take control over Garrus's "Ghost" move him to cover in an overwatch position (within a certain radius of Shepard) select his sniper rifle look down his scope to make sure you are happy with his field of fire. When you were happy with his position you would confirm the order. When the game was un-paused Garrus would move to that position select his sniper rifle.

But what was on the video would have been fine with me. Why was that cut from the original game?

Completely agree OP. And yeah, I value pause too. The new battlefields should also account for it more, instead of linearity.

I would love bigger fights. More than 3-4 enemies at one point and ability to actually go tactically around them and hit them from more than one point.

Ideally you should have to pause a lot more.

That XCOM Declassified game play looks interesting and full on (I suspect that the guy playing the demo made it look more competed then it is). I don't know if the next ME needs that much control, I would like to keep the need to command the squad to a minimum to keep a flowing game play but the current system is too inadequate. A bit of a middle ground between XCOM D and ME would be ideal for me.

Perhaps some modes/stances (e.g. Aggressive, Defensive) for squadmates might make things slightly more interesting.

I agree.  Although I often just go go go, when I do take my time and pause to set up team attacks and/or combos, it does make a difference.

I would also like to see a more tactical view as I too have experienced the need to get out of cover to re-position squad mates.  Not a huge deal, but a better tactical overlay is a "would be nice to have."
