So I just blew the dust off my copy of ME, and I wanted to do a new run with my old Sheps face, but with different backgrounds and a different class.

 

Is there a "regular" way to do this by importing a save from a previous playthrough, or do I need to start editing saves?

It's not possible. You will need to create a new game to change class/background.
