I hear a lot of talk about siding with either the templars or the mages, and though I don't expect either to be a major factor in the game as a whole, I for one hope that we can potentially remain neutral (leave them to destroy each other) or at the very least, find equal footing like we did in ME3 for the Geth and Quarians.
And if all is lost, let us watch the world burn. The extended cut of ME3 made me very happy when I could deny the star child altogether, and though I know we can't exactly do that for the main quest itself, the end result in the case of say, the Civil War for example, should have us be able to walk away from the noble's petty squabble, because there are more important things on the horizon, like the fade tear.

I realize this is hard to implement, two options are hard, a third might be ridiculous, but maybe it can always lead to default regardless. But since default will vary between one faction or another, it would feel like its own choice. It would be nice, with all the morality games out there, to not have to be paragon or renegade but have a third path down the middle.
It adds to the illusion of capability to the character.

I don't see any reason why this should be so. DAO didn't do it. The options were so different that you couldn't even classify them as neutral or extreme.I understand but from a gameplay point of view it seems to be the only way to implement a third option is for it to end with one of the extreme options

Well, in DAO, there were at least 6 options. And I'd think that every two at least related to a specific outcome.

See, from the name, I thought this would be a thread about wanting head splattering kill animation.

Only lightly. I will have to put my dream of just popping the enemies head off to bed.

If you look at real world conflicts... it's very hard to be truly neutral. Eventually, once the conflict gets big enough you are almost ALMOST always forced to pick a side.

Oh, I always support neutral and middle ground choices. It adds credibility, and gives more opportunities to roleplay ... But maybe it's just me disliking black and white thinking. Anyway, I'd rather have middle ground options that come with "disadvantages" than being forced to choose between two "extreme" options I equally disagree with.
(Nothing against a "happy medium", but I understand that this cannot always happen because of balancing the choices ... And yes, I also understand that neutral options cannot always be available. But the more often the better, imho.

Geth and Quarians is not a good example.
Both the mages are Templars are the same people. Mostly human, sometimes elves. Templars are a faction and mages are born that way. Its liberty vs security. Chaotic good vs Lawful evil etc...

And yet the Witcher series managed to do it quite well, in both games. The first one even having its own Neutral path epilogue.
