The same was said when DA2 came out. People said, "this is Dragon Age and that's Mass Effect, they're not the same so ME3 won't go bad" and it did. Pre-orders are stupid, no matter what game it is that you're pre-ordering. Why should anyone give their money to developers before their game is out? It's betting it all on pure uncertainty.

I don't know what will happen with DA:I, so far I am not impressed and I think it is going the same way as Mass Effect 3, little footage, lots of promises(with no evidence) and a lot of hype. I will wait until after DA:I is released to make any judgments on it. Nonetheless, I think that the idea that you need to play a game before you can say it is good or bad is a bad one. If I'm going to spend $60 on something(on anything really) then I'd better be damn sure that it is something I will enjoy and to know if I will enjoy it, I must have an opinion about it.

The difference between ME and DA for me is that while I'm invested in the warden, Hawke and NPC characters of DA I don't have any expectation for an ongoing story involving them.  Both DAO and DA2 have on the whole, for me, satisfactory endings to the characters story so DAI is starting with a clean sheet.  ME3 was the climax of a trilogy that I loved and it within that context it was pretty dire.  As a standalone, I guess it would be fine.

As for pre-orders, I think to say they're stupid is a little harsh, its not like the money leaves your bank account until the game ships so there's always room to cancel if the game looks bad and if you know you want the game, what's the difference?  I got the signature edition of DA2 and have no regrets and if I had waited to launch and heeded the reviews I might not have bothered with it which would have been a shame.  On the other hand, the less said about the ME3 collectors edition the better... you win some you lose some.

If DA:I is roughly the same as ME3, I think I'll like the game. Yes, the ending of ME3 was disappointing, the rest of the game was fine however. And since DA games are related to each other in a different way compared to the ME trilogy, I don't think I have to worry about any ending either.

Well, similar to what a few other people have said i really didn't think ME3 was that bad as a whole. The only thing that I hated was the ending, and I hated it with a burning passion. For me DA2 was the real dissappointment, not ME3. And as far as DAI goes, I don't know. If it's bad then I'll still probably still buy Bioware games in the future in general, but if there is another dragon age game after DAI then it'll probably take a miracle for me to buy it.

Just as an observation, I think that if you're unsure about BioWare waiting for price drops and other feedback is precisely what a responsible consumer should do.  It's up to us to make a game you want to play.

If I don't think it's good, I'll not think it's good. And I might not buy any story DLC for it. Given that I enjoyed DA2 despite it's flaws DA:I is going to have to try really hard to crash and burn for me to dislike it.

If other people don't think it's good and act like they do about DA2, I shall thumb my nose at them and walk away whistling a jaunty tune.

I don't, they are stupid. You're hedging your bets on the promise that the "developer will deliver". Sure there's time to cancel it but either way the very concept of preordering is pretty dumb. You're basically paying for a game from which you have no idea if it will be good or bad (things can look good and still be bad), just to get it early and maybe to get some extra gimmicks that are worthless. Once you realize the game is bad, there's no point, the developers already have your money, even if you returned you'd get less that what you paid for.

Why lose some at all? Avoid the pre-order, then see if the game is good or not and then decide on that. What do you lose really? Not having it early, some gimmick that will turn up to be useless in the end? Pre-orders are a waste of money, the very idea behind is ridiculous.

No, in that case I wouldn't have faith in BioWare anymore, I disliked both Star Wars: The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3, so that would be BioWare's third strike and they would be out.

Why does it matter? If someone wants to pre-order, then they will. If they don't, they don't. It doesn't affect you if someone wants to pre-order a game, so insulting people who do is pretty childish.

I like pre-ordering, getting a game before most others and feelin' all speshul inside  =]

Doesn't seem a sensible reason, if I waited for a review I trusted I'd be here forever. I don't have many friends who buy early these days. In fact I'm providing a service to them by pre-ordering, they get the benefit of my experience before handing over the cash. If you think about it, I'd be a bad friend if I didn't.

I don't typically preorder either, but it depends on whether or not one considers the additions (if any) to be worthless.

If it's a game that I definitely want to get early (which doesn't come around too often) and expect to buy Day One, and there's an incentive that I care about, then I'll preorder.

Obviously part of that thought process involves my history with the game company and the level of trust I have with them.  Same with things like Kickstarters.

Good or not good is based on opinion. What is not good to one person maybe perfectly acceptable or good to someone else. That is why I find most people's opinion useless, because of varying tastes. If I read a review I could care less about the reviewer's opinion or numeric rating of the game. I want a detailed description of the pros and cons of the game from that person's perspective. I will then go and read many other reviews.

If the game interests me regardless of the reviews I will buy it. I have my own internal checklist of what game I will like. I remember the reviews from Oblivion: Elder Scroll stating how go it was (Game of the Year), photorealistic. Since I liked Morrowind I gave Oblivion a try after the price had dropped below $20. Oblivion was a disappointment. The ending of the main quest made ME3 and DA2 ending look like the patron saints of endings.

Gamers complained about the reused area in DA2? Oblivion had that in spades. I refused to buy any dlc or expansion for the game. I have not purchased Skyrim and I owned every TES game before Skyrim.. I might consider it when Skyrim goes below $10.

Gamers told me that mods will make it better. If I have to rely on a third party for make a game I just bought better to play then something is seriously wrong. If I have a poor experience with the vanilla game why would I invest more time in it.

The same with the Witcher 1. I played the game did not like it. I did not buy Witcher 2. I have two copies of it courtesy of my son-in-la who works at GameStop. He picked them up for .99. The game sits on my shelf collecting dust.

Good is a relative term. I actually liked DA2 despite its faults. I sure I will have fun with DA:I. Bioware has yet to disappoint me.

Mr. Schumacher is correct. The gamer can vote with his/her wallet. Wait for the price drop. Read the reviews with a ton of salt and make a decision.

then I think your standards may be set way too high... cause while the other BW where good, I dont consider them in the top 10 games. I think Nostalgia may be playing tricks with you.

Honestly I like Star Wars: The Old Republic for the class stories, I think its one of The best stories out there. The fact everything else was pretty much a Wow clone, was 'meh', Mass effect was good story wise (considering the soruce matrial) with the only expection of the way the ending was handled. All the rest was great. I mean minus the last ten minutes, 10 out of 10 games. with the last ten minuts 7 out of 10.

Despite what everyone says DA2 was a decent game. It wasn't a blockbuster of a game but it wasn't bad. Those who where "disapointed" set there hype too high. Don't get me wrong Orgins was better but DA2 was not "Bad"

Also remember ME3 people are NOT working on DA:I

Just remember to keep your Nostalgia in check and you should be fine, Just because it was good for its time doesn't mean it still is.

If DAI turns out to be as amazing as ME3, I am going to be happy.  If you're the kind of person where the last 5 minutes doesn't suit you, thus ruining the other 30+ hours of amazing, then you have issues and are going to find something to hate no matter what, in anything and everything.

Damn this delicious pizza is amazing, but the crust at the end makes me wish I had some dipping sauce. And I don't.  Entire pizza RUINED.

Yeah. I never understood either how so many people can hate so much a game just because of the last 10 minutes. ( Iike I loved 90% of the game ) This is just too weird for me. I would be happy if I could have the same issue. Infortunately M3 for me had some serious issues, not just the ending.

It doesn't matter to me whether someone does it or not if that's what you're asking. It matters to me when it starts affecting me, and it is. Pre-orders are the norm these days and every time they seem to be pushing it even more with the "bonuses" they offer. It'll get worse if people keep advocating pre orders, you can be certain of that. Take a look at ESO and its pre orders, even worse look at its Collector's Edition bonus.Normally, I wouldn't care and I'd just say "its your money, you're the one that gets burned if the game ends up being crap" but the reality is that when lots of people preorder and promote this behavior it affects us all.

This video presents a good argument about why its bad. Basically many of the reasons I stated, and I know some people are going to see "TotalBiscuit" and immediately dismiss it. It still presents a good argument.

So the person is taking a gamble. It is their money they can do what they want. The same with funding a Kickstarter. The problem with your suggestion is you are still depending on some else's opinion on what is good or not good. Which means you can still be steered wrong.

The extra gimmicks may be worthless to you whereas they add value for someone else. You have your opinion and are entitled to it. The person who pre-orders has his/her opinion.

You failed to understand my point, just like the previous people, read my other post. I could care less what someone considers a gimmick or not, or how anyone spends their money.

Honestly, this doesn't surprise me at all, it is the typical line of thought I was expecting. I am done discussing this.

Is there even another party-based RPG at the same level of quality of DA and ME?

I don't think so. I've spent whole lazy afternoons searching for such a game and it has been futile. So no. I won't leave.

Simple.

Most likely I'll think it's good. It doesn't take much for me to like a video game. I enjoyed DA2 so it's safe to say I'll enjoy DAI also.

I'm easy to please.

Since I know I want to play DAI the very instant it comes out and since I loved the first two games, pre-ordering makes sense for me. If I'm going to be outside my game store on release day at nine o'clock, why not secure my copy and get whatever extra goodies come with pre-ordering?

Mind you, the only non-Dragon Age game I've ever pre-ordered was The Secret World, where playing during a beta weekend convinced me. I've also backed some Kickstarters for a handful games I really wanted to see made. Waiting for reviews is my default position, but for a game I'm probably going to play eight times, not pre-ordering is only going to slow me down on release day.
