Controlling all previous protagonists would be one way to do it justly, but I think it's a clunky approach.

It would bascially being talking to yourself.

Yeah that is a possibility, they would have to be cleaver with it for it to work but I believe if they ever did do something like that they could do it :D

Yeah, I don't think having them all be playable is really a viable option. Maybe some of the roleplaying fanatics who make wildly different characters could put it to good use, but imagine how boring it would get for a more casual player. If all your characters are human male lawful good sword and board warriors, there isn't going to be a lot of divergent viewpoints or interesting interactions possible.

If your previous characters where all human males that would be true yeah. Although in the second game you could only pick a human. As you said it depends on the person, some people would prefer that, some wouldn't mind either way and others would disagree. Again everyone is different and want different things.

I posted an idea about how I would want it done on the old forum. I quickly degenerated to the typical bile you see on these forums. If your interested here it is:

This in no way is a debate if Hawke/Warden are appearing. This is strictly a pipe dream that I thought of while daydreaming about how exactly i would be satisfied with their appearances in DA:I (if in fact it is happening). A lot of this is going to be pretty vague since I have no idea what the main story of DA:I is or who the major characters are.

First off, with the implementation of Dragon Age Keep you are given the ability to recreate the appearance/class/ Specializations of your Warden and Hawke in the new DA:I character creator. The default appearance of Hawke in DA2 is also available. This data is obviously imported into DA:I

If you recreated your characters you are treated to a optional prelude and a interlude during the game play:

Optional Prelude: Once you start the game, you are instead brought somewhere in the Deep Roads. A couple of Dark Spawn are roaming around. Almost as if they are looking for something. Suddenly all of them are struck down in quick succession. It is your Warden. He sheaths his weapong and you hear the sound of hands clapping. The camera reveals Oghren clapping and laughing on how you still have it and that he is glad he was able to finally get a message to you. You then start a conversation with Oghren. You have the same control over your Warden's dialogue as you did with all player characters. He/She is now voiced though (it would seem silly otherwise [sorry, just my opinion]). You fill in Oghren with where you been (mostly import points from Witch Hunt DLC).

After pleasantries are shared, Oghren then tells you he's been looking for you. He's discovered something going on in the Deep Roads and he is no longer who he can trust among the rest of the Wardens. Then, you take control of a party of Oghren and the Warden. They make their way through a level in the deep roads till they come across a a the point of Oghren searching the Warden. Now since I have no clue about the specifics of DA:I, let's just say what they come upon has to do with the main antagonist.. A fight ensues and a cave in happens. The Warden is able to save Oghren but is caught in the cave in. We fade out with Oghren shaking off his injuries and looking at the cave in with frustration.

Then DA:I begins.

at the end of what could be considered Act I or II in the story you are then given an optional interlude mission:

We are in the middle of Seheron, 1 year before Cassandra interrogates Varric. We see a Fog Warrior encampment. They have a prisoner. One of the fog warriors comes over to feed the prisoner but she quickly kills him. We then see that the prisoner is Tallis. The alarm in the camp then gets raised. A bunch of Fog Warriors start heading towards Tallis. Then Boom! Hawke appears!. You then take control of your Hawke and Tallis as you fight off the Fog Warriors. After you take out 1 group, an 2nd wave jumps down from the trees and attacks (just because i think it would be funny).

Hawke and Tallis, win and in a similar fashion as Oghren/Warden, You and Tallis discuss what Hawke has been up to and Tallis informs Hawke that she's uncovered a group in a nearby ruins and the name Malcom Hawke was being used among this group. So then Hawke and Tallis then make their way through a short jungle till they come upon an old ruin with antagonist troops all over. Hawke and Tallis fight or stealth their way through. Maybe a puzzle or 2, then they come upon pretty much the same thing/people that The Warden and Hawke fought. The results are the same too. Hawke ends up captured, Tallis is left broken and defeated.

You then go back to your Inquisition game. Yadda Yadda Yadda, near the end of the game, if you did the prelude and interlude, you discover why the antagonist needed Warden and Hawke (or if at all) and during the final mission you go to a dungeon or room (whatever really) where you discover that Hawke and Warden have somehow escaped. Left in their place is a chest of loot. Inside is:

-Champion's armor from DA2 (corresponding to whatever class your Inquisitor is)
-A tome that when used teaches you 3 new specializations;
    ~ Champion (Warrior)
    ~ Force Mage (Mage)
    ~ Shadow (Rogue)

So there you have it. Obviously the specifics of the the levels doesn't really matter. This was just a fun way to show the mechanics of what I was thinking.

What do you think? Feel free to share how you would want them implemented.

Just please leave the topic only on how you would implement the Warden/Hawke. NOT if bioware should implement them.

Yeah, don't worry, you quickly get used to people shouting out as you said their "bile" at the stupidest things. It's sad and not needed but there you go, that's a lot of people for you :(.

Your idea isn't bad and as you said you had this idea before BioWare even said anything about the third game. I like where your idea was leading, it has some good points in it. I'm actually happy that BioWare has changed the settings to play Orlais, it's a nice change instead of the same old places where used to. Although saying that would be nice to visit the old country :P but also fun seeing new places too.

Anyway, personally I think your idea has potential, some will agree others will disagree but then again that all depends on the person, everyone is different with different hopes and ideas in mind. But good on you for posting your idea anyway. Not everyone bothers or are too intimidated on what others think. Personally if someone starts on me and uses unnecessary language or behavior, I show them up by not stooping to their level using their language or behavior but still getting my point across :D.

No, I wouldn't like to be able to choose the dialogue of The Warden or Hawke in conversation with the Inquisitor if that came up.

Its completely illogical and would confuse a new player starting with Inquistion. They'd have no reason to care about who The Warden or Hawke is, and then when presented in conversation with these people, they suddenly are able to choose their dialogue but no one else besides the Inquisitor?

Absolutely not.

A. I'm pretty sure BioWare already said this wouldn't be the case.

B. If it were, then we would essentially be talking to ourselves. Which I already do too much of, so...

Naw... I've played too many different Wardens and Hawkes to get attached to any one of 'em, so I'm cool with letting them be NPC if they were somehow onscreen.

(Apropos, I'd definitely laugh if the Warden did end up showing on screen as an NPC, but get getting interrupted every time he/she was about to say something -- or perhaps he/she says nothing and one of the other NPCs notes that he's/she's always been the silent type...)

No no and no. I don't want to see either of them again. Mentioning them is fine but I want to move on from their stories. I had my fun with my Warden and my Hawke but I want something new.

It would be fun to hear people telling stories about them or maybe just some gossip, to hear that they are somewhere doing their own stuff, but assuming direct control...i would say no.

I honestly kinda hope don't see them, mainly because it might be a pain for the developers.  The Warden is either human, elf, or a dwarf.  On top of make his/her face in anyway.  ME3 still has problems importing a face from ME2, can you imagine what the Warden would look like from DA:O to DA:I.  Also it be hard to write them in probably that makes a lot of sense, let be off doing there thing and the Inquisitor deals with his own problems.

This is Dragon Age Inquisition not Dragon Age: Return of the Warden or The Champion's return, The game is based on the Inquisitor not them, sure they may pop up in the game or in a DLC or DA4 but don't expect them to be in Inquisition.

Found this while searching around, although I think this is ridiculous, I actually kinda like this idea.

BioWare has stated that there is a chance that the Warden as well as Hawke might appear in some fashion.  However, this does come with some stipulations.

Any and all information that is available about the Warden and Hawke's possible inclusion in Inquisition can be found here.

I could also see people after these conversations bitching about not being able to play as their Warden/Champion in a DLC that would never be released, flood the forum with complaints and drag us back to the forum dark ages of fan-boy complaints and vehement claims of imminent abandonment of all future Bioware gamers playing anything the company release until their petty demands are met, much like those of April-May 2012.

Sound familiar anyone?..................

My reaction to that behavior is simple:  I'd disregard those kinds threads and move on.  I'm not going to let people that are outraged by the treatment of "their" Hawke or Warden affection my judgement.

Besides, we've already had that happen a couple of times recently.  The "PRE-ORDER CANCELLED!" threads have been popping up here and there quite a bit.

My favorite is this one.  It's actually worth the read, as David and a few others came to chime in:

Until I wrote this post I didn't know BioWare already they wasn't doing it. A couple of people have mentioned that.

Lol, maybe you talk to yourself because you're the only person around you can have a sensible conversation with?   ;)

I've noticed there is more bitching about other subjects and I don't see a massive argument with loads of people flooding the forums with complaints about this one. From what you said you've obviously seen this before and BioWare might have done something you don't agree with and now you have a big chip on your shoulder, but this is off topic (which is annoying in itself, people don't talk about the conversation the thread is actually about) and maybe you should get over it by now. And this comment, isn't this classed as "bitching"?

Controlling the Inquisitor, Warden, and/or Hawke would basically be like talking to yourself.  I don't need a game to do that.

Hopefully neither the Warden or Hawk return in DAI as anything other than honorable mention. Honestly, I don't see it as their story at this point. This is about the inquistor and thus should be focused solely on his or her acts.

I couldn't agree more.

I think It's rather unlikely, for us to control all three characters. If they decide to bring back Hawke and the wadrden they will probably present them the way they want.

I wouldn't mind to see Hawke that much though, because he/she is already voiced, the warden on the other hand will seem strange to appear again as a voiced character.
