Alright so as a massive fan of DA, having started my obsession with Bioware with those two games and then moving on to the ME series AFTER, I found the concept of the single Shepard character for all three games really... kind of awesome! It made the three games feel more like one, or at least connected them in a unique way.

So if you had the chance to reinvent the DA series in this aspect, would you want your PC to be like Shepard and carry over on to subsequent games, or do you enjoy starting fresh with a completely new character each time?

I wouldn't want to go the Mass Effect route, as great as that series is.
Because, as David Gaider has said: Dragon Age is not about a Shepard-like character. It's about the world, about Thedas.

And that's exactly what I want out of my Dragon Age.

I enjoy a new character every game. The most important thing about it is the freedom it allows the story. The only benefit of having the same character is that companions have more time to develop and is easier for the writers to get them to form attachments to the player.

I think that ME lends itself much better for a single protagonist as it has a massive universe and is therefore in desperate need of one single focal point, especially with the storyline the series has. DA on the other hand is a much 'smaller' setting which really tells a story of its own, so in that respect I agree with both Gaider and LittleBird.

I will admit that I wasn't too stoked to have a new PC with DA:II, but I have completely changed my mind having experienced it. It's a good thing to have a fresh new pair of eyes in the Dragon Age universe each game. Having the same main character each game runs the risk of god-tier with each new crazy thing the main character does. It also starts to become less and less believable. That would have been the case if Shepard stuck around for a fourth game.

It also gives me the chance to play my PC a bit differently. My Dalish Warden was all super serious duty first, and my Hawke was a fun and sarcastic with a terrible stroke of luck. I can't wait to see how my dwarf Inquisitor will turn out.

They seem to handle it well. It's not like we're a different warden, or a different hero in the same city. It's more believable than Shepard saving the galaxy twice, and coming back from the dead once.

I wouldn't mind a trilogy, just as ME continues on without Shep, I wouldn't mind a DA trilogy that focuses on a single protagonist. If the Inquisitor is really tremendous, maybe Bioware will do just that. I also think Ezio is a good example, the Assassin's Creed series has lots of protagonists,  but Ezio was so good he got a trilogy of games spanning his entire life.

I'm not opposed to the idea, the character just has to be good enough to deserve starring in multiple games.

Nope. New cast and MC each game is great. I hope they keep doing it.

I used to wish Dragon Age would have had a fixed protagonist, but now I just don't think it'd fit. Makes sense for the ME series, because it's pretty much about Sheppy doing the whole Savin' the Galaxy thing and the Reapers.. reaping.. stuff.

Though, I do miss my former DA protagonists from time to time and wish I could play as them in a shiny new game sometimes.

i think both ways have their cool aspects and not so cool aspects. but both mass effect and dragon age give us both routes so its all awesome. i think shepard worked for mass effect, but i feel like having new characters in dragon age worked for dragon age. especially story wise. its great to find all your old squad mates again and continue your romances in ME. but i really love having new characters to get to know in DA. and also being able to see old characters but pretend you don't know who they are is cool and funny. I think i prefer the new characters, but there is also something special about having the same character throughout the games.

Hmm yeah I think I agree with you guys that it's sort of nice to start a fresh character each time - otherwise might get stale. Especially if you were stuck with the same appearance as well for hundreds of hours!!

I do think the DA series lacks a certain connectivitiy between the games, which is not necessarily a bad thing either.

I really, really, REALLY don't want to see Dragon Age go the Mass Effect route.

Even without the ending controversy, the game was clearly straining from all the potential divergences in the games.  All to many decisions ended up being massively trivialized or outright retconned.  And frankly I can't see how the series can go forward without a full reboot at this point.

Dragon Age has it right.  One game, one protagonist.  Different locations.  Even this can't be maintained permanently, but I think it will keep the series going a good while longer.

I seem to have an addiction to character creation, so while I kind of miss still playing as my previous characters, I do love the idea of getting to design new characters to use and being able to have them be something other than a Grey Warden, or a human noble of Kirkwall. I also like that DA is more about Thedas than one person doing everything (as much as I love ME, it did start to feel ridiculous how much Shepard was left to do.) It makes me feel like, with each game, I am creating my own history for this world.

Admittedly though, all my characters end up being a bit too much like myself when it comes to personality traits. So it looks like everyone significant in the history of my Thedas will be known for making inappropriate jokes and endless sarcastic comments.

I am more than ok with that  :D

I think it's a fun concept, and I hope they keep it up. It does tend to simplify things when it comes to imports and continuity.

That said, I do wish they could find a way to integrate our previous protagonists, instead of discarding them entirely.

I I'd start to think they were behind these events and I'm secretly playing as the villain!

Now THAT would be an awesome plot twist haha!

It would rival the Revan plot twist to be sure!

I actually prefer the Dragon Age approach. There's a great many advantages to it that make it much more enjoyable for me. For one, there's no worries about how my characters import. No matter the system, each one is new and there's no worries about appearances carrying over, and aside from that, there's no chance of being restricted on classes. Granted, Mass Effect allowed you to switch it up between ME1 > ME2 > ME3, but this space-technomagic doesn't translate to DA. If I'm a rogue in DA:O, I should be stuck being a rogue in every game featuring this PC. I can't suddenly become a mage in DA2, then become a warrior in DA:I.

As a side note: I actually prefer the voiced protagonist, so it's a good thing, in my opinion, that we leave the Warden behind for a new game. Going forward would either leave BioWare tied to keeping the PC silent, or eventually adding a voice and effectively ruining the character for a lot of players.

Completely cool with a new protagonist with each game. Hesitant when i hadn't played any of the DA games but now it just feel right for Dragon Age

I think both is fine. But I like character creators, so making a new one for each game is my favorite way.

I believe that if the roles are reversed it would be even more awesome. I love both games but imagine future mass effect games, where you play as different protagonists, witnessing different types of adventures, exploring the space in different time periods and so on. And on the other hand imagine Dragon Age game, with Ezio like approach. For the future next gen Dragon AGe and Mass Effect games i would love to be able to play like that. Role reversal will freshen up the gameplay, story and.....everything possible.

Imagine if you 3 DA games, where you begin as a teenager and finish as old man, who travelled all the Thedas, witnessing all ithat is there to be seen.

Now imagine Mass Effect next gen game, where every game you play as different species, or at least different character covering slightly different time period, or at least visiting different locations doing variety of things, like one protagonist being turian mercenary or some krogan grunt in the heat of war between krogans and some new race or sth. Or some drell merchant who is caught between two factions who battle for control on his own planet, with all the races and backstory of the series-sky is the limit, and locking the protagonist is sth that can be altered in the future.

Now in Dragon Age, you can see the world perfectly clear from one set of eyes, plus you will not be annoyed by - Old God baby stuff, where is morrigan, where is my warden etc....Sth similar to the witcher games, where there is single protagonist. But here in Dragon Age you could make future installements feature perfect character creation in the first game, that let you make cool character and 3 voices to choose from. And this is it.....Next games you play as that guy. More accurate complexion meter will be enough to cover the needs of tweaking the original face of your character.

Since I still have not played ME I can't comment on that but I will say that a different protagonist for each DA game makes sense. Even though there are some longer range themes to connect the series each game still stands on its own. DAO had its main story, DA2 had a different one and DAI yet another. I like exploring different areas and getting to know different cultures. It's just not realistic for one person to be heavily involved in everything. Give me a new protagonist per each [very long, please] game plus some dlc and expansion packs to give him/her some life after the big whatever. Also, I think it would be easier to keep the series fresh since the story doesn't have to be tied to a specific person/location/time period. And DA was never meant to be a trilogy.

Then there's vanity, in DA I can be forever 20 something as I create new characters for new games.

I'd rather have a new PC, new cast, and new story with each game.

It helps with spectacle creep, and makes the universe look less small like Mass Effect.

Suddenly had an awesome idea for a protaganist in DA4...

Sandal!

Complete with voice, dialogue wheel and romance options. Comedy Gold

Seriously though, i dont really mind if we get new chars every game. What I do want though is by the end of the saga their stories and mysteries (the disappearance of the warden and hawke for example) are told and answered, and I would like at least one game where the protaganist is the same as a previous one, to add a bit more glue in combining the games together so that if you were to sit down one day, and play through the entire saga, it would add more fluidity

Seconded. Heck, I'd be ecstatic if things were far enough apart that they didn't even bother with save imports.

A new protagonist each game seems to be more my thing. I like the ME series, but after playing those games a few times I've started to develop a profound dislike for Shepard.

I also prefer to have new companions each game, so that was something of a disappointment in ME. I'm seriously hoping they'll limit the returning characters to Varric (and Cassandra, though she wasn't actually part of the game in DA2) I can live with a cameo every now and then, but continuously running into people from previous games often comes across as appalingly contrived writing to me.
