I don't dislike it in principle, but they haven't shown me that they can handle our ex-PCs in anything like a satisfactory manner, which makes me sceptical.

Possibly if they're going for this approach they should have the games more distant from each other in location/time

Hard to do with a span of 100 years though. In the Elder Scrolls many of the games are set several hundred years after one another, if not all.

Maybe "Dragon Age" should expand into "World of Thedas" or whatever, to cover more time :)

I love creating new characters and thus, a new protagonist per game sounds perfect to me. I find it more interesting to start something new with each game.

I don't so much mind the new protagonist every game as long as the stories don't intersect. The stories so far though don't so much require the same protagonist as much as it requires thoses protagonist presence in greater aspect. The warden and hawke are both major players in the events leading up to DA:I and having them just disappear or be referenced by word of mouth is a bit of a cop out. The area covered in this game and the scale of the events taking place are too big for them to just remain spectors of previous adventures. I know some people are loathe to see their versions of hawke or the warden as npc's but i personally believe it must happen.

It's going to be problematic no matter what, partly because importing these characters properly is probably not possible because of the changes made each game. If they're stuck behind helmets, don't speak or something like that, it's no better than them simply being mentioned but never seen.

They don't have much of a choice though. These games are taking place in the same timeframe, in the same lands, and involve the same people and events. Simply having the previous protagonists vanish is bad writing. They may not be exactly the same as you envisioned them in your playthroughs, but they cannot simply be avoided as long as these games take place in the dragon age in thedas.

The only condition where I would like the new protagonist each game is when there is NO save import. This might sound weird comnig from someone who made a post with the idea of the Warden Commander returning in Inquisition; I honestly prefer having no save import at all.

If there IS a save import, I prefer having only one protagonist. You would have less run-ins and less stories crossing paths, causing for some awkward events and cameos.

Besides, I think keeping certain people around you allows you to grow more attached to them. Varric is a perfect example why that won't work with multiple protagonists: my Hawke was his buddy, NOT my Inquisitor as well do we have to be reintroduced to Varric (because the Inquisitor isn't familiar with him) which is simply odd.

I agree with what someone else said that based on the scale of the universe and the story being told having one protagonist can make everything flow better than having multiple ones. Dragon Age is more like a serial where Mass Effect is ofc, a trilogy. It is a space opera focused on one person's epic story and how much Shepard stands as the sole attributed hero to their world. It is very much Shepard's story and all the other characters serve to support that story.

In Dragon Age, I feel like even if Hawke or the Warden is "us" or the "main character" so many other characters have the spotlight or are in a higher position of power or are involved through their choices in very world shattering events. I feel like the protagonists of Dragon Age are very much of their world and their names are important, but they aren't held up as mass icons. They aided, they were involved and they faded off and the world was left to deal with their actions. There is a level of worship and idealization that just isn't present in Dragon Age as it is in Mass Effect in regards to them. If that makes sense?

Also I just enjoy the sheer creation of it. Getting to go through and make a whole new character and choose their looks and their personality and their choices with tons of options for race or class gives it immense replay value. I could go right now and start over on Dragon Age Origins and playthrough a whole new experience and still probably find choices or side quests I missed! I have played through with my Warden so many times it took me three goes to get everything and explore all of the choices and decide how I "wanted" it to end. I can't imagine how much trial and error through choices Inquisition will set up, but I hope it is a lot... though there is always that "oh crap" moment when you realize one choice in a conversation in the beginning changed everything.
