So no Guns of Icarus players?

Used to play it a bit in the past. I immediately took a notice to how critical teamwork was, and how every crew member is crucial to success. Started playing with a couple of friends where we'd have a special set up with the heaviest ship, the Mobula. Were some good times.

Although I haven't put many hours into it, from my brief experience with the community they seemed a friendly bunch.

Started playing Civ Revolution

omg it's so fun >_> simulation games have always been my favourite - with the exception of RPGs - and it was the most fun I had with a video game in a while. My Empire was mega OP and super rich >_>

I do have many hours in Civ 5. I bought four copies with all DLC on Steam christmas sale so that my family could play together since we've always loved playing Settlers of Catan (if you know that one). Firaxis makes addictive games.

I'll attest to Civ 5 and its expansions being decent experiences. Haven't played any of the other titles in the series so can't judge there.

Sitting passively on one side of the earth studying the sciences with the other half engulfed in war doesn't get old. While they're too occupied with one another, suddenly you've advanced several hundred years beyond them in technology. Their musketeers just don't cut it against our airplanes.

Has anyone played the Amnesia games? I personally found A Machine for Pigs to be an absolutely brilliant narrative with possibly my favourite speech in all of gaming.

Never played them due to having heard of some majorly disturbing stuff occuring in the later half of the first game. Without potentially spoiling for anyone else, I'll only say it was enough of a deterrent for me to never try out the game.

Fair enough, the games are meant to disturb as opposed to scare. Many people complain that the sequel is less scary, but it seems to be from people that don't understand the story and the dread it brings on a more personal level because of its commentary on history.

As far as I'm aware, from most people I've seen discussing the series, they play it because of the scare-factor. Players want the raw fright of an eerie ambience coupled with jump scares that was introduced in the first game, and I guess it made people biased as to how a scary game should play out.

Thus when the developers went for a different direction in the sequel, it didn't hold up to what people expected of the series.

I'm not trying to claim that the games aren't good. They're well known and successful for their ability to induce fear. I'm not put off by that, but what you start to see later on. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It's these disturbances that genuinely make me sick inside, to the point I wish I didn't have to see it.

I know what you're referring to, and I understand. I have trouble enough discussing 20th century atrocities in an academic setting without feeling sick.

Yeah. The world can be such a wicked place.

I will say that if you're looking to be scared, Amnesia is one of the best bets.

You mentioned history relating to the sequel. Is it based around occurances/resemblances that have happened in real life?

It's a commentary on the atrocities of the 20th century to come, as it takes place on the eve of the turn of the century, December 31st, 1899. For fear of spoiling it for someone, I'll just say that the speaks volumes about the dangers of subjective morality and the reduction of human dignity to that of a common animal. At the time, the naturalist movement was understood and accepted as leading inevitably to determinism without a moral foundation, which is something of a debate still today in philosophy. I'll put my favourite quote in white text below and a link to the best speech so people can avoid spoilers.

They will eat them, Mandus. They will make pigs of you all! And they will bury their snouts into your ribs, and they will eat your hearts.

It certainly opens your eyes to reality. So strange to think it was a mere century ago since the first world war...

We should count ourselves extremely lucky to live in this age, an age after the constant trials of the past. Even then there are still many people today who face the same struggles. I feel sorry for them.

Bethesda really seems to be taking their sweet time on their next game. They typically leave about 2-3 years between their major releases, and it has now been over 3 years since the announcement of Skyrim. Perhaps Dishonored put them back? I'm not sure if that was the same team. Anyway, I thought that was interesting since I'd love to see another Bethesda game by the end of 2014, though it's not looking to be done by 2015 unless they're waiting for E3, which I'd be surprised. They don't really have the best record of holding back info. Just something I was thinking about...

So it's set in like an alternate history or what?  How does he know about mustard gas?

**Minor spoilers**

The game takes a leap into the supernatural. It's based around the visions given to the main character of the approaching 20th century atrocities. The character goes mad after seeing a vision of his sons dying in WWI in a horrific manner. The speech is made by the supernatural being that shared the visions. He is trying to justify the terrible things he is doing because it seems better in comparison.

Elder Scrolls Online is coming out, although it's not developed by Bethesda. I figured since they're still in charge of the publishing, it's gonna "count" as a major release in some way.

I figure they may be announcing something at E3 or somewhere else this year, even if they're not planning on a new release this year.

Yeah, I know about ESO and Wolfenstein too. Neither of them are done by the same developing company with Todd Howard and neither was Dishonored. They only do Elder Scroll and Fallout, so I'm expecting something soon. It's just odd since they announced Oblvion two years before its release, they announced Fallout 3 four years before its release and they announced Skyrim about a year before. Here's hoping though :)

Yeah, they're likely cooking something up in their sleeve. Sometimes silence can be a good sign, as it'll mean they're taking good time on their game and/or want to keep a nice surprise.

I know of some major games released last year that were announced around the time of E3/a little bit before and they were finished & wrapped up for release before christmas arrived.

That sounds pretty neat. I'm not huge into horror stuff though. But it's a cool speech.

That Evil within game looks scary (I think that's what it's called). Not having tons of guns and having no choice but to run is scary. The thought of something chasing you is the adrenaline pumping stuff.

Origin is making the original Dead Space free for a limited time, so check that out if you don't have it.
