Will bad guys be quality or quantity this time?

In DA2, and even in DA:O, the random bad guys who would attack you were often kinda weak and there were a lot of them.

Especially in DA2, in fact, it was so ridiculous in DA2 that you'd kill 50 some odd random bandits in one sitting at times.

This made them feel less of a threat and kinda silly, I like games that pit you against a few strong and competent enemies rather than hordes of faceless nobodies.

I don't mean make them bullet sponges, but instead let them have a smarter AI, or make them deal more damage, or something to make them dynamic and better.

Like being more reactive, maybe they dodge or block, or retreat to get a better position/heal, or they work together.

Anything but the hordes of literally faceless bandits parachuting out of the sky at you.

Hard to say, really. With the veil torn any random creature from the fade is likely to pour out of it, so it might be quantity over quality in that aspect. However the Red Templars might be more of a qualitatively stronger foe as I don't believe there are hundreds or thousands of them at the ready to attack you. But this is just an educated guess as far as I'm concerned.

Unfortunately, smarter AI is not easy to do.  Maybe with frostbite and more "up to date" technology will let the devs have more room to load things into memory.

You need lots of little nondescript mooks to target with your AoE spells, grenades, and bizarre warrior/rogue abilities like Flicker, Hail of Arrows, and Scythe.

Oh, and if we fight another High Dragon, please let it use more variety of tactics against us than flying back and forth between its perch. Dozens of times.

Just saying.

The correct answer is always "whatever fits the setting."

I think a balance would be preferable.

Very few games manage to hit the mark just right in that respect.

Personally, I like a lot of the DA battles, where, instead of just facing a single Monstrous Creature ™ or hordes of faceless minions, it's a mix-up.

Like, there's a big leader bad, surrounded by some archer bads, mage bads, and tanking/meatshield bads.

Of course, my usual approach to that is to stealth in my rogue, and take out the big leader bad. Then proceed to divide & conquer the rest. Mages go down first, of course.

Oh & of course, please, Bio, don't blow away my stealth tactics with your megalomaniac speech cutscenes. Thx.

But how will they tell you that resisting them is futile and that the world shall know pain then?!

A bit of both probably, they will be much smarter in DAI and they will use tactics based off our location, cooldown time, health, tactics, and they will use special points of interest in the area aswell.

A scenario they gave is while you're fighting different enemy types they'll work in combination for example a prowler is a type of stealth based enemy which is extremely agile that also retreats from fighting head on and likes to sneak up and backstab you and your companions and while you try to take it out a bruiser with a giant 2 handed axe is attacking you, while you're getting attacked by archers who are hinding behind a tower shield user and advancing or are somewhere else like a high platform, while an enchanter is laying traps and buffing everyone on the field.

The dragons will be very differnt and each time a new strategy will be used to defeat them, different gear and tactics and they will use tactics to, if I remember correctly one of the articles said something about them being able to focus their flame and melt the cover you're hiding behind.

Hopefully the former, but so long as a bloodbath isn't our only recourse, I'm happy.

Both.

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!

But really, I've always felt that random encounters in dark alleys were there more for grinding purposes than actual challenge purposes. I think that type of stuff has a place in RPGs.

I just hope for more challenging battles overall - a better mix of quality and quantity, like others have said. Why is it that games usually either do story really well, OR combat really well, and it's sort of a mutually exclusive thing? I'd love Dragon's Dogma-style combat with Dragon Age-like story. A girl can dream...

I like plenty of battles against hordes of enemies. I would rather fight 50 bandits that are individually weak than 4 common bandits who each have enough health to withstand 10 high level attacks. You are supposed to feel heroic and the former does that while the latter doesn't.

Smaller number of foes should be used for low level encounters or more powerful enemies.

Well, if I remember correctly, it was said that the enemies in DA:I wouldn't level up with the character but be at a set level already.  So some will be weak, strong, or at your level.  However, I do believe they will be smarter this time around.
