Varric's hair*line* looks pretty rough, all patchy and rope-like, the way it would sometimes get in DA2's CC. I really hope this is improved by release, and isn't a sign of things to come regarding hair in general. Although you would think that they would have addressed it before showing off a close up....

I think its due to the program because if you look at the trailer its much better

Cassandra looks amazing, but Varric is just off. His chin and jaw don't seem right and, as has been harped on plenty by now, his hair is bizarre. I assume part of the wig look is the fact that the graphics hadn't been finished but the color looks far too dark unless he's been lying in a pool of blood or something.
I'm just as happy to have the chest hair under cover, though.

You should be more interested in what Cassandra has below neckline.

You mean the eye of Sauron, constantly watching you? How romantic.

Cassandra looks really fine IMO, and no, I am not biased. *denies vehemently* (BTW I recognized her the moment I saw her in the trailer, but maybe it was just the seeker symbolism).

Looking at Casper konefal's concept art, for me the design strikes a very nice balance between that of an aggressive warrior and a more stereotypical femininity. She looks aggressive due to all sharp angles and the short cut of her hair, while a more feminine aspect of her is conveyed through the braid that circles the top of her head, the long drawn shadow, and the full lower lip. This design matches perfectly with my impression of her from DA2. There, she was aggressive and short-tempered, however she also had that soft and romantic side to her as well.
Varric is another story though. I don't mind the new design should it remain that way. He just gives me a far too different impression than he did in DA2. In DA2, he looked like a very cunning man dwarf, and self-confident to boot. In the new design, my impression is that of a very sad and tragic man dwarf (which makes me worry a bit).

Anyways for me, the perfect Varric is always Matt Rhodes' concept art of him!

Mehh. Varric looks bad, imo. What's with the bright orange eyes? And the dark red hair? I just don't see the need for all those ridiculous changes.

The eyes were just a glitch with the capture. They don't really look like that.

I think their looks in the trailer were intentionally stylized. As in, after shooting the trailer in-engine, they went over everything, fiddling with the light and tweeking the faces.

His hair looks more blond/dirty blond in the GameInformer screenshots. Also, the eyes look strange due to glitch.

No complaints here, you can't expect everything to look exactly the same in an entirely new/different engine.

They look like they are missing one of those next-gen hair shaders... the difference in quality between the skin and hair is way too jarring.
I feel the same way. I guess it's a limitation of the engine. A limitation of all engines, in fact, not to be able to render realistic hair. At least not without seriously bogging your PC down like the new Tomb Raider did.
I also don't like the way the new redesigns completely changed the way these characters look. Varric looks so different from how he looked in DA 2 that I didn't recognize him at all, at least not before I saw how short he was. And Cassandra just looks odd. Her jaw doesn't look as comically misplaced in those models as it did in the first trailer, but she still looks too severe. I preferred the way she looked in DA2. I'm playing DA2 right now, so it really sticks out.

Maybe she has been? Being on the front in a battlefield tends to have those side effects.

I agree. I have oversized ears in real life; it took me years to grow into them. I think Cassandra's looks great. ![]()
Besides, I think the larger ears compliment the oval face and broad cheekbones.
Cassandra looks like she's been punched in the face in that gif.
Heh, like a bad picture taken at the wrong time. That can make even the most attractive people seem ugly to some. The gif animation looks pretty awful, but what do you think of the update itself?
