Between the pictures in the OP, I don't know if I would say that there was a "redesign" as opposed to some evolution of the model, coupled with different lighting, camera position, and facial expressions.

Its considered a redesign

I don't like them....I love them. Cassandra looks attractive and Varric looks bad ass!

OP,

Compare ME2 companions' looks between their appearances in "Fight for the Lost" trailers and their appearance in game.

Trailers are not accurate.

Eh, if unfinished work is considered a redesign, then I guess we go through a lot of redesigns....  To me the pictures look pretty fundamentally similar.

Oh well.  /shrug

I honestly think they did a good job with this, Cassandra looks way awesome (As though she's seen some S***), Varric I dont mind so much, although the change is a little unsettling, I'm sure I'll get used to those neon coloured eyes. As long as their character is still intact im all down for this!

If we're watching the same thing, they look exactly the same

I am not crazy about any of the renditions...Varric, Cassandra, or Morrigan. Not sure why they had to vary the looks... perhaps the new engine. At anyrate, I dont find the changes as bad as poor Alistair or Zevran in DA2

I like the Cassandra change, not a fan of the Varric change though.

The differences with Cassandra are much less it seems to me, Varric looks depressed or something

When will the Vivienne kit be released? I must know. She is beyond FABULOUS.

I love Cassandra's design. It makes me want to get my hair cut like hers, but mine curls so I would be very disappointed. I also wonder about the scar. Is it permanent? Will our Inquisitor get battle scars? So many questions.

Varric looks great, but I miss his lighter hair and warmer brown eyes. Maybe the colors will look different in game. Also, it was a crime to cover his chest hair on the character kit. A crime I say!

Cassandra looks much better in-game than in video. Varric is fine.

I like new Cassandra, looks more natural. Varric on the other hand, he's kinda looks like a short human now, rather than dwarf. Meh.

I don't mind the redesigns and it is a new engine so it was bound to happen.

I kind of like this though? I mean I was never a fan of DA dwarves; the girls were cute (of course) but the guys were, erm, well, they were more Gimli than Thorin Oakenshield, let's put it that way

That band around Cassandra's head is the only thing that bothers me about her as it looks really out of place, otherwise I love her. Varric...what did they do to him? his hair colour is so wrong and the eyes  it really is just those 2 things with him

And that is a big problem of DA2 and "Hobbit" movies - dwarves must look like dwarves, not like short humans. Thorin and Kili don't look like dwarves at all, the same with Varric. But girls love them so it's worth it from business point of view.

Varric looks like a short human since DAII. Nothing has changed.

If we go down that route, we'll end up with Elves as slim humans with long ears and Qunari as bulky humans with horns. Its an irony ofc, but it rings some truth, i'd like to see each race having distinctive look.

Hah!  I had to actually double take and look closely to see the band!

I'll take it as a compliment :)

Was there ever a reason given why the sudden change in Varric's hair color?

Just wondering

That's the way :)  always find that positive!

But did I miss something? is there a reason for it or it's just deco's like Aveline's hair bands?

No clue.  Could be that whomever created it simply wanted to make it a bit darker and went a bit too far (which maybe was harder to see at the time due to lighting reasons of the original/new model) and then for the purposes of snatching this picture, it was less of an overall issue rather than going in and updating the headmorph to get a new picture?

I think David had mentioned he was going to give some feedback on it as well.

I'm surprised by how much I'm bothered by Varric's new hair color. He was basically bright blonde in DA2. I could see dirty blonde maybe, but the (dark!) auburn is really jarring. I don't know this Varric.

I guess you could say he's coloring his hair (or did previously) but I find that to be really silly. I hope they change it to something at least more faithful to the original. Maybe tone his eye color down too, but most importantly, please give Varric his blonde hair back!

Aside from that, I really do think they look awesome and I'm very excited. The realistic complexions; the imperfections, scars, wear and tear, is awesome. I'm digging Cassandra's severity and practicality, with these teeny tiny hearts on her boots. I also got a kick out of the Blooming Rose's logo on Varric's flask, that was...interesting.
