They look like they are missing one of those next-gen hair shaders... the difference in quality between the skin and hair is way too jarring.
I hope that gets remedied before the game comes out, but BioWare has a horrible track record with hair.

I'm more curious to see how the characters who did not exactly transfer into DA2 with grace *cough* Alistair *cough* turn out
If Alistair (or Zevran) were to be featured in the game, I'm not sure his existing DA2 model would have any real bearing. Even if the head morph where able to be imported (rather than built from scratch), it'd likely get heavily modified to utilize the improved engine.

I appreciate that you can't spoil anything or don't even know the whole story, but I think we all know we are going to be seeing more of Alistair and probably Zevran. I'm not familiar with how the character models were imported between the two games, all I know is that Alistair looked.... worse for the wear in DA2
(Speaking of which there needs to be an achievement for having a threesome with Isabela and Zevran in all three games)

To be honest, I actually don't know if they are in the game. Big game is big and I don't have my ear close to the pulse of a lot of story aspects.
I wouldn't be surprised if you're right, however.
I think Cassandra and Varric look great - though Varric's eye and hair colour need to be adjusted a little bit. I was a bit apprehensive on reading and posting in this thread because the title rminded me of the, er, heated discussion on theses characters design after the release of the E3 trailer but the tone of this thread is much more positve.
The both of them look older than DA2, more mature. Not that it's a bad thing, but it's different from DA2. As long as they have their original voice actors everything is fine with me.
No mention of Varric's neon orange eyes? They really let the designers go to town on him. Perhaps they shouldn't have.
Just roll with it, neon orange eyes are sexy.
I think Cassandra looks great (although now that its been pointed out, I can't not see that band in her hair lol) Varric looks good too but I do miss the blonde Varric, his eyes do have a bit of a renegade Shepard neon glow too them, can't wait to see some more of the companions.
I'd agree with others, Varric's hair colour needs toning down and his eyes look kinda off (lack of sternness & the eye colour).
As for Cassandra, just get rid of that holier than thou hairband and she'd be absolutely fine (in my perspective, at the very least).
Yep, it's my opinion. Also now that you mention it, I'm not a fan of men with beards either.
Heresy! Burn the witch! Burn her!
They look absolutely fine. Nothing wrong with their looks.
I had not seen these yet. Thanks for the share, OP.
Cassandra: I never though the original was that bad, but I wasn't crazy about it either. However, in general I think of her as an intense, strong looking woman with short dark hair, so really any design would do. She was never an iconic DA2 person for me. I am honestly more concerned with her having the same voice actor than having the same appearance. But as for this new look specifically; I like it. I thought that the eyebrows were a bit off previously, and that seems "fixed" here. I also like how she has sharper features.
[edit]
Wtf is that thing on her head? She doesn't need a damned hairband, her hair is 1-2 inches long. It's not doing much where it is now anyway. Take it off!!
Varric: I'm not too keen on either design really, but the biggest issue is the hair color. Varric was very clearly blonde in DA2, just as Alistair was in DAO. Now it seems like both of those guys have to be redheads (Alistair in the comic) for some reason. I think it's odd, and I don't understand the reason for the change. This is not a game engine issue; they can give him purple hair if they want to. They have purposely decided to give him red hair and I just don't get it. The other issue for me is that he looks too human and not dwarfish enough. However, I will add that the dwarves in DAI seem more human than in the previous two games. Their features seem to be elongated a bit, and this design of Varric goes along with those standards as well.

Given the change in game engines from the antiquated Eclipse Engine to the newer, badass Frostbite 3 Engine, I would say that the redesigns are pretty cool. It makes both characters look like they've changed with time, while still capturing the unique "soul" of each character. I really don't mind it at all.

Given that we're using the Keep to import our choices, it's not much of an achievement if you can just tell the game you did it but never actually did it (in DAO and DA2).

Yeah agreed. Their hair looks pretty horrible if you ask me, no where near the quality of some other games in that respect. There's still ample time for the team to correct that however, so I'm confident that Cassandra and Varric will have something resembling hair when production is finished.
Since it's an updated graphic I can understand a difference in appearance. I do like the more realistic artstyle as opposed to the exaggerated anime of DA2. Yes, Cassandra does not look attractive, but I think that it was already established in DA2 that she wasn't going to win any beauty contests.
I like their looks. They look like they've been through hell and back. And then had to go back into hell because they dropped something so they went back for it and came out again.

What are you smoking? She looks super hot! ![]()

I suppose. If you like jaws that you can break bricks with.
I mean, how many Phillistines can she slew with that jaw bone?

Reading back over the thread, it's rather amusing how many folks (including me) aren't thrilled with Varric's hair color. Also, I had noticed something a little off, and it was the chin.
To be honest, I think they both look really nice overall. The more melancholy cast to Varric's features do suit him and Cassandra looks a lot warmer and more realistic. I am looking forward to seeing more art soon. ![]()
As I have said I don't mind Varric's redesign but what I do want to know is if his personality is still intact more specifically his sense of humour.
I rather like the new designs / graphics.
Especially Cassandra seems way more realistic now; a strong determined female warrior, love the scars on her face. Whether someone finds her look attractive is fortunately a question of personal preference as we all know there are no single format for beauty. The believability of the character and realism in the looks is more important to me than feeling attracted to her (though I actually do find her fierce look rather attractive).
Varric I find realistic as well. I know there is a hair color difference, but that to me is nitpicking I personally don't care about.
I will be interested to see in-game how much detail can be produced to the different characters feelings in their facial expressions. We do see a glimse of it in Varric when he sits down by the dead townsfolk.
Varic's eyes are fine, they aren't actually that color and what we're seeing is caused by how they captured the image and that's all.
@Mike_Laidlaw They both look amazing
but I don't recall Varric having orange eyes before?
not that it doesn't suit him...

His hair could stay that way or it could change.
David GaiderA quick look at Varric’s new model in Inquisition.
I am totally side-eyeing that hair color, though. We shall see if it remains
Hopefully the devs have heard our polite requests regarding Varric's hair color.
Thanks for the information about the eyes, Spectre! As always, you're great at providing source links.

I like their design, especially Cassandras. She looks like a warrior and someone who has seen a lot of action. In case of Varric like many have stated already, his hair is a tad too dark compared to what it used to be. I could live it though as it doesn't look too bad. ![]()

I totally agree. That's why I'm totally fine with Cassandra's redesign, and I approve it even if I don't really find her attractive from I've seen so far. Like you said, it isn't really important compared to what you described in your post. At least she looks strong and that is way more important.
