I'm currently about 25% into an Adept playthrough and I'm finding it hard to find relevance in the class when my (also active) Sentinel class contains all the biotics I really *need*, so I would love some fun and interesting builds to switch my Adept around.

Currently, my Adept has Reave as a bonus power to try something new and I ranked Liara's Warp Ammo up to use that for the increased damage against primed targets, and Liara lifts everyone and I Reave + Shockwave and finish them off with a Wraith. It's fun, and I like Reave but Shockwave isn't as viable as Throw.

I skipped Warp & Throw because I already use them on my Sentinel, and I don't want to be the Adept that hides behind cover and just throws out biotic combos until everyone is dead, so no Pull or Singularity as Liara takes care of that role way better than Adept Shepard anyway.

I know I am intentionally gimping the Adept this way. I suppose I can just switch Shockwave with Throw and still maintain my "Assault Adept" play style but with a much more reliable detonator. On the 360, I don't like having more than 3 frequently used powers, which is why I like Ammo and Defense bonus powers on all my classes.

Anyone have any ideas? Anything you tried that was a little outside the box that was fun? Thanks!

Take Barrier or Fortification, then get Singularity, Shockwave, and a Shotgun.  Resist the urge to spec Throw, even if it will make your life easier.  Now run around with your shotgun and Shockwave things the team has primed.  Use Singularity if you need a little CC.

I like this. Do you recommend, if I went with Barrier, to use it's detonation ability as well? So then my 3 hot key powers would be Barrier, Singularity, and Shockwave?

Or what about forgoing Singularity and using Liara's instead and my 3rd hot key be Cluster Grenades? Though I suppose they could be a bit redundant with Shockwave ..

You could detonate barrier if you want.  I didn't, but this was one of the earlier runs I did in the game.  Also it was before the buffs to Fortification, so Barrier was at least as good at the time.  The change to combos means that you can work a bit better with Tech / Combat squadmates too.

Yeah you can skip Singularity I suppose.  Liara's is rapid enough.  I started that run from Level 1 and what I did was actually level up Liara's Warp before Singularity so she could prime any target.  Clusters would work if you want to spend all your cooldowns on Barrier and Shockwave.

Any particular power evolutions you would strongly recommend?

My only toss up is Shockwave's Reach vs Detonate. I have it set to Detonate now, but so often it dies right before it hits a target a bit out of range. Reach may offer a bit more utility, especially since the Detonate only works for biotic explosions and not other power combos, if I wanted to also bring other non-biotic squadmates. Which did you use?

I always do my shockwave for 4Radius / 5Detonate / 6Recharge
I used to spec 5Reach but feel not much different.

You may spec 3 hot keys like this and equipped only shotgun & max fitness
1. Barrier
2. Warp
3. Shockwave

Krogan Adept !!

Just sharing  ;)

Lately, I have tried playing an aggressive Adept by actually trying to use Barrier's detonation function when purged.

Just. Awful.

There are a few issues with trying this playstyle:

1) On Insanity, you incur a -40% damage reduction (DR) penalty when out of cover; that is, you take 40% more damage when out of cover. At most, Barrier gives you only +30% DR, and only +25% if you take the purge detonation bonus at rank 4.

2) You incur a cooldown when you purge Barrier, not when you activate it. Unprotected enemies (I think a maximum of two) will be lifted in the air if caught in the Barrier detonation; these lifted enemies can be comboed. However, they are only lifted for about 3 seconds. You absolutely need very close to +200% weapon weight to have any chance at detonating these lifted enemies yourself, since your cooldown will be about 2-2.5 seconds.

Now, you can bring Liara, Javik, or Kaiden to detonate these enemies, but considering how much easier it is to have these squadmates set up biotic explosions for a Shepard Adept rather than detonate them, it seems like a wonky playstyle.

3) Enemies lifted by Barrier purge will be actually be lifted away from you. So unless you are in a small indoors map, shotguns are terrible; you would actually need a fairly accurate assault rifle, pistol, or sniper rifle. At which point, you are not an aggressive Adept, you are an Aggressive-Passive Adept. I tried using it a Vanguard with Nova (Purge Barrier > Nova), but that was not much better. Sometimes my shields/barriers would be shot off before I could Nova making that playstyle useless.

So if you are looking for an Assault Adept, I would actually consider using a Sentinel and call it an Adept. Tech Armor, Barrier/Fortification/Defense Matrix or Warp Ammo Ammo, Throw and Warp, Lift Grenades. Take your favorite shotgun and go nuts.

Yeah, the Sentinel is certainly a much better aggressive adept, though I suppose that was by design. My idea to detonate Barrier quickly went out the window once I actually looked up its stats on the wiki and saw its pathetic detonation damage. Just not worth it.

Right now I have my a Sentinel playthrough and bring Liara each time for her Warp Ammo, and I haven't even specced into my Fortification yet. Even without it things are still very easy. I'll probably level it up last just to be basically immortal, and I haven't even specced into Lift Grenades yet either.

Double Throw, Double Pull and Warp are all you need to finish the entire game on insanity.

Maybe not 'assault' though :P For that you need Flare and an upgraded Lancer. Or forget about Flare, get Warp Ammo, still use the Lancer and laugh your ass off as you can now pretty much play your Adept as a Soldier -_-

You don't have to go Sentinel.  Adept will be more difficult, especially if you are trying to detonate Barrier.  So I suppose if your heart is set on detonating Barrier, then go Sentinel and use it instead of TA.

For the Adept, you just can't run around out of cover too much early.  Take Reach on Shockwave at least until you get some fitness and DR from Barrier increased a bit.

You can also switch out Barrier for Fortification if you want more DR and less of a cooldown penalty, even if it isn't a biotic power.

I've struggled a bit with this as well on my last Adept run. If you put Barrier on an Adept and go cqc, you mostly end up with a slightly gimped Sentinel that hasn't taken a 2nd defensive power (yet has no BP slot). IMO it's really hard to build an ME3 Adept in any way that isn't outshone by a similarly themed Sentinel. It's a real shame that the Adept went from having the most unique playstyle in ME2 to being a bit of an orphan class in ME3.

I also settled on Reave, but I specc'd for DoT stacking with Warp-Reave and brought James for Squad Incendiary Ammo. My build didn't kill as fast as Warp-Throw, but was still different enough to be interesting. I used mid-range weapons for my build, but I think it's possible to get in close, using Reave's DR for protection, but you have to be mindful of having it active all the time.

Another idea I had was to use Lash and focus on CC - kinda like a Biotic Engineer - to lockdown and debuff enemies before killing them (probably with mid-range weapons). This probably still a bit slower than Warp-Throw, but it's something Sentinels can't really do at all, since they don't have Pull or Singularity. I don't need DR so much because everything I do hinders enemies from shooting me, but I can still clear fights pretty fast by bringing Garrus, James and/or Ashley with Typhoons and Squad Incendiary Ammo.
