I had this crazy theory which relates to this subject. Basically, the Old God who spoke to the Magisters, wasn't actually Dumat, but rather something who wanted them to open Pandora's Box with the intention of getting the Old Gods out of the way, and possibly trapping something within the Golden/Black city. I also think this entity was the same one who spoke to Andraste, and manipulated events to create the Chantry. What it is, I would say is a sort of trickster god ( basically Fen'Harel - for lack of any other name) who wasn't as powerful as the Gods, but was smarter than them.

To me it looks like a long con. But if you are immortal, what difference does time make. The end game is of course to tear the veil and restore the world to what it was previously.

I don't think it is that old.  And if they were playing that long of a game, they already missed their chance to strike way back when the 1st inquisitioin came into being and if they were using the chantry, why would they manipulate the weakening of it .

I personally don't buy into an dragon age Illuminati; That said i do think a group, organization or guild is behind the Veil tears but i think they are merely a hireling if i am being honest. This Veil Tearing is a clear destabilization tactic, that much is clear but the Imperium is too distant, too weakened and too distracted by its own flow of events to be behind in most likely hood.

Qunari? Not their style nor their strength; Prefer Martial invasion.

One of the Kingdoms of Thedas? They are all otherwise occupied or effected by the event.

...i don't believe it's Flemeth or a deity of some kind behind it either; But i'd say the threat is mystical, not flesh.

Demons have intelligence and cunning, and they have patience; I wouldn't be surprised if they had a few followers in the mortal world working to bring their greater aspects into Thedosian reality.

I don't buy the iluminatti idea either, and that isn't what I am really driving at.  Magisters are unlikely I agree, but they are the closest thing to Machiavillian schemers, and while their hands are full, they aren't being directly affected by any of the "convenient events" that are occupying everyone else.

I guess it could be one of the forbidden ones that we haven't encountered yet, but it still seems to be a bit too planned out.  To my knowledge we haven't really encountered any demons who are operating in this manner in DA, not saying they couldn't, just not aware of them having done it.  They tend to grab power quickly, violently, and visibly.

We also are going to be encountering Demons that no one else in Thedas has ever seen given that the Veil is torn.

New Aspects, Greater Demon Lords that even the Imperium never uncovered.

That lead me to my theory.

You are correct, even Greater Pride Demons do the same base bargaining and offering that the lesser of their kind do, base deals and bargains for trinkets and rewards.

But whom is to say that is all there is to their kind?

It wouldn't be unheard for a demon to contact a mage through the Fade, it's just i suspect that one mage got contacted by a mage no one in living memory has any idea about. Its a rough idea, plenty of speculation behind it but i haven't come up with anything else besides Flemeth, Random Deities or etc.

Well I guess it could be the Formless one or Imshael the two forbidden ones we haven't met who supposedly first taught blood magic.  They do seem to keep a low profile and build power.

I wish we at least knew a bit of how sundering the Veil this utterly was completed and in so many random locations; If the process was explained a bit more then we could attach a bit more information at least to capabilities of those behind it.

It likely would point in the direction of at least a few suspects.

Given we only dismissed the physical aspects of Gax Kang the Ubound and Xenobeck it could be all four working in concert but i doubt it. I couldn't see Demons working together but that said i could see them serving if there was a hierarchy among the four that is something we don't know.

All of them are powerful that is certain but which is the strongest? Which one calls the shots? What have they been doing in the Mortal world for all this time?

Considering 3 have names and the other is The Formless one, if I had to lay money I would say TFO would be strongest, but that is pure conjecture on my part based off the names.

Of course it was. Howe is the true mastermind, he faked his death, and retreated to his evil lair to plan the veil tears. Soon the whole world will be in chaos, and while no one's looking, he can finally admit his boundless love to Loghain.

o_O but Elder ones can die and he is just their Herald.

Why would we care about squid face?

Honestly a puny little mortal in Monster Hunter: Vendetta detonated a magicky nuke bomb thingie and turned something 200 times worse then Hulu into a sea food scampi.

Admittedly Thedas doesn't have a magically nuclear bomb made by Sir Issac Newton but it does have Magic!

Striking when the first Inquisition came into being wouldn't have been very efficient. The Inquisition were fighting groups of mages practicing dangerous magics. Not an organised force of mages. Moreover, they were supposedly fair in their dealings with the mages. So I don't believe there would have been enough animosity. The goal seems to be to put the world in such a state that people refuse to fight along side each other, and for them to cause so much damage to each other that they are going to be defenseless should something worse come along (basically, divided we fall).

As for why it would try to weaken the Chantry. The Chantry is currently lead by someone who is working against it and seemingly knows something of what is going on. The whole purpose of the Chantry was to spread a certain idea. In that case maybe it wasn't Andraste who was fooled, maybe it was Drakon.

It's just a theory though.

The first and greatest of the Old Gods?

...Possible i guess; But it falls into the deity section.

Its something that while i deem possible its improbable, and if its improbable to me then its likely going to turn out to be true (Its a bioware game)

If it is a demon pulling the strings, I hope it is a Greater Pride demon. Sundering the Veil could be the only way one can cross over into the World of the Living.

Well there's also a group trying to get into the Black City like the Magisters

Why not?  Seriously, you want to destabilize a region just enough without having the blight get totally out of hand? Ferelden would be perfect, low population all in all, not keep on reacting quickly to a blight, not going to trust Grey Wardens, and even if Ferelden falls, you have Orlais sitting there ready to smack the blight down before it causes more damage than it was meant to.  And the way to set it all off is to magically make a smart darkspawn and send him on his way with knowledge of where the next old god is.

BTW, I guess the rest of the surviving Magisters from who entered the city could be behind it all, doubtful but possible.

I don't know if the whole Drago Age Illuminati exists or not, and during my time here I have heard so many different theories about the Old Gods and Black City that I can definitely conclude that this is one aspect of the game where we want to learn more about.

Now, having said that, I just want to say that in Inquisition, someone in charge of the lore of Dragon Age needs to start giving answers, not all the answers, but some. Because there's so many questions and so much hype already, that if they prolong the mystery, the result will be a bit disappointing because when the answer comes, it might not match the hype that the suspense built.

If there are any. For all we know Corypheus and possibly the Architect are the only survivors of that bunch.

I'm pretty sure the Architect is one of the oldest Darkspawn (I still think he's really a Magister), so him finding where an old god is isn't that far-fetched

The whole blight just seems like plus for whoever is behind the tear

I don't think the Architect is one.  He doesn't seem to have the same vibe or even form.  Yeah he is different from regular DS, but he doesn't have the same aged look as Corypheus.

Again, Gaider specifically mentions how convenient it is that Ferelden and others can't respond to the threat and Ferelden's reason is that its recovering from the blight.
