I still say play Rashoman with the party members.  Start the game as the main character, then have x number of running side plots involving your eventual other party members, showing events happening to 2-3 of each, them being drawn to the Citadel or wherever, finally being pulled together and setting off together in search of action/fun.

As for who the main character is...I'm actually in favor of them not being human, preferring instead to play as one of the alien races (maybe a Turian special ops agent?), but if we're going human protagonist, I would say a non-military spacefarer.  Or to put it another way, "Han Solo."  Yeah, let's play as a good-hearted scoundrel and smuggler.

Hope the game is set in long distant future from Shep's time.

I'd be all for a fireflyesque independent captain of a ship gets drawn into bigger events.

I'd like there to be a variety of background history to provide hooks for roleplaying.

I'd likely prefer to be human but wouldn't have an issue if like in DAI they expand the racial options to one or two of the alien races as well.

The important thing is that the protagonist is independent from all major political alliances. He/She might support one side or the other but not being a member of those. I would be disappointed if in the next game we are again an Alliance marine. Would love a different perspective on the Universe. Pirate or mercenary (à la Boba Fett style) with grey morality would be my favorite background. A complex personality rather than a pure hero would be wonderful.

This could actually be quite neat. Although, I have always wanted to find out more about the Illusive Man

I wouldn't mind if you were a criminal. Maybe part of a gang. Something happens and your lifestyle changes completely, you decide if it's for better or wrose.

The next protagonist shouldn't be a descendent of Shepard or any of the cast from the trilogy, they'll most likely end up being a 2.0 version of them.

The new protagonist should essentially be a Privateer with some military and space exploration background.  The new game should feature some options for of working with the established quo, against them or simply for yourself.

I hope there is a 300-Artemisia-style background option.

@OP: I don't care as long as the story is good.

I would like a game that set my character as the 2nd in command of a Blue Suns merc company hired to provide security for a remote outpost. (Maximum flexibility on race and background options would be ideal.) The outpost is attacked and lost or destroyed, and there would be many casualties including the CO, leaving the PC in charge of the band of survivors. Whatever hit the base you are protecting would be the main plot element, but it shouldn't be anything too epic--space Nazis would be good, extra-galactic super-advanced beings that can destroy the galaxy would be really really lame.

The player could then choose how to proceed with the side plots in that remote and poorly developed part of space. Does the PC become a smuggler, bounty hunter, or criminal and operate for profit? Does the PC rebuild the merc company as a force to bring stability and security to the region, even it means losing out on some big pay-days? Or does the PC take over and rule colonies and outposts in the area, amassing power and crushing any opposition?

How you chose to develop your PC should then determine the options you have at the end of the game for handling the original threat that is the central plot.

I'd also be happy with some of the other ideas thrown around in this thread.

Not to mention it will make you able to change to anykind of activity you want without any justification or explanation!

If that's the case they shouldn't change professions in a span of two years, it was ridiculous that Liara who spent most of her life as a xenoarcheolgist, managed to become the best info broker (with no past experience being one) in the galaxy in such a very short time span.

The shift itself was okay, it just wasn't sold well. We are never told how Liara went about transitioning from an archaeologist to an information broker, or how she went about putting together the nuts and bolts of what essentially is a private intelligence agency. To a certain extent that is understandable given dialogue budgets and such, but if it couldn't be adequately explained in game it should have been the focus of one of the comics or books at least. It certainly would have made more sense to have that be the focus of the Homeworld comic and it would made a much more interesting novel than Deception.

The problem is that its hard to believe, that some one with no experience with being an information broker some how in the span of two years becomes the best in the information broker in the galaxy it feels forced, that however is for another discussion.

I really don't want to play as a criminal or any kind of pirate. It's really against a lot of my playstyles. Why not go for different types? Let there be SPECTRES, military folks and pirates.

The SPECTRE and military have already been done in the trilogy (Shepard was both), I'd prefer something like a mercenary (freelance not Blue Suns, Eclipse or Blood Pack) or smuggler (like Han Solo in SW), though I wouldn't mind going down that road again in a future installment.

I thought it would be interesting if you could pick between Asari, Turian, Salarian, and Human as a playable race. As far as the setting goes I thought a Mercenary Leader would be interesting and you go around recruiting people and you can choose wether to be a respectable leader (Paragon) or a ruthless leader (Renegade). I really don't know when or where it could take place. Maybe after the Reaper war? That is when there would be the most job offers because majority of the galaxies militaries are destroyed or weakened.

Less concerned about what the character was than what the character ends up becoming.

I'd also like the new protagonist to be academically inclined.  If Shepard was space James Bond, I think space Indiana Jones would be a good direction.  A scientist who can fight when they need to, but maybe not look so professional when doing so.  Just imagine the sword guy scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" as a renegade interrupt! An archeologist especially opens, or maybe digs up, all kinds of doors for plot.

Although I guess I'm describing Nathan Drake...

Maybe sort of like Robert Langdon from the Dan Brown Novels?

I really like the idea of a Mercenary Group start; it doesn't necessarily have to be bad (Ike in Fire Emblem). Also, not being of a military background would give us a lot more freedom with the characters, both in appearance and behaviour. Within the military you're supposed to adhere to a certain standard - which is pretty boring, in my opinion. I also feel like the zero-boundary Spectre could have been interesting, but conflicted too much with Shepard still being part of the Alliance and following orders. As renegade as Shepard could have been, s/he never tells Anderson or Hackett to stuff it.

What I would really like is for your character to start off as a member of someone else's Merc Group, and then circumstances lead you to starting your own. Commissioning your own frigate, picking/hiring your own crew. You could be a great Vigilante Hero in the Terminus Systems, or a relentless pirate.

Although, how this would work would ultimately entirely depend on what the overarching plot is.

I want a character that has a background working for that one place you run into in ME2 where the turian spokesmen gives you a vivid description of some kind of wilderness adventure tour while pretending to take cover behind his desk. I can't remember the name of whatever he was promoting, but I thought it was hilarious. That's never going to happen, but as a hunter whose gone on many wilderness adventures it would be kind of cool to have that option.  I think having multiple options to choose from for character backgrounds is the way to go. It's not like it has to figure too prominently in the plot.

Anything but a militarized protagonist would make me happy. It's too rigid for my liking, and we've already done that. I'm guessing they will move away from it since ME4 will be a new start in the franchise and there are so many other options to explore. Like not being confined to a human protagonist! It would be a shame not to capitalize on the diversity that the ME Universe provides with all the many races to choose from. More customization for a more individual experience.

Something other than military/mercenary would be nice
