Any word on if they are going back to DAO darkspawn or sticking with DA2 darkspawn

I can't understand why they would want to stick with the power rangers, I mean DA 2 Darkspawn. Most of all, I dislike the armor they were wearing, that thing should definitely go. I thought Darkspawn had ghouls make armor for them. Of course none of those armors are anywhere near what a normal humanoid could make, but that thing in DA 2 is ridiculous.

I found it unfortunate that the interesting concept for DA2 darkspawn wasn't executed as imagined. I liked the idea, but it was just never realized in the game. So I'm hoping that they will use the same idea, but be able to implement it fully with the new engine.
Nice link, thanks for it. That Flemeth concept...wow. Any of those would have been awesome.
Overall I prefered the DA2 darkspawn to DAO's. They look like they're actually infected with evil or something whereas DAO was more like they had an acid bath and were feeling great. The permanent Joker smirk they all had just made them seem goofy and they all kind of resembled monkies.
I also really liked the direction they took with genlocks and hurlock alphas in Legacy. I hope shrieks make an appearance again with a redesign as well.

While I think both designs have their merits, I'm hoping for a middle ground between the two. The darkspawn in Origins just looked...I don't know, like the colors seemed too muted to me. In many cases, they just seemed to blend into the background.
While there is some actual semblance of color to the darkspawn in DA2, I can't take them seriously. I haven't been able to since my husband pointed out how much they looked Skeletor.
This image is pretty big, so I'm going to put it a spoiler tag.
Your average DA2 Darkspawn.
Now, let's check out Skeletor.

Maybe it's just me.

They did. It was just never used.

I don't really care either way.
However, they use the DA2 appearance of the darkspawn for Heroes of Dragon Age, so I doubt this is changing.

I definitely see the fish thing that LPPrince was talking about earlier, this one reminds me of a shark. Idk, I just don't like the armor.

The update in engine will definately give the devs a chance to make everything look closer to what they want. The detailed look and shape of the qunari faces we've seen so far make me think that this will be the case for darkspawn as well.

Oh so they're going back to the DAO one then?
Anyway, do we even know if darkspawn are going to be in the game? Its been a few decades now, i'd figured most if not all had retreated back tot he deep roads by now.
Your time table is off. Also, we go into the deep roads every game (so far) I doubt we'll be avoiding darkspawn entirely.

I always thought that there should be an iconical look of everything important in a good setting. Be it famous heroes, antagonists etc. Instead of having that we get widely different darkspawn and heroes' appearances in two-three games. Looks ominiously like a lack of creative focus.

hmm... I'm actually mixed on this
Ogre~ DA:O
Hurlock~ Definantly needs reverted to DA:O beyond using crossbows, plus Vanguard Alpha seems far more intimidating than a freak with a large metal stick.
Shriek~ DA2 Concept Art seems better than the outrageously lanky thing from DA:O
Genlock~ DA2 since it makes them more than stockier hurlocks, though I wouldn't be opposed to there being 2 breeds of Genlock due to how many dwarves have been tainted
Emesaries~ A little bit of both as the shaman like ones from DA:O were cool but the DA2 ones were more creepy

Oh yeah. We'll be in the Deep Roads again, I'm sure of it. No, I don't have proof, but I'd bet willing to be on it.

They did a decent job with Origins overall. Otherwise, I agree. No more Skeletor!

I would love if they went back to DAO darkspawn, alas, it seems not to be, just as long as they don't look like reptilian humans like in DA2 i'll be fine

The darkspawn design will probably be very diffrent as they will be using a new engine

They just need to get rid of that stupid metal coif and tan them up a bit.

Probably will go into the deep roads at some point (unfortunately). I thought Da2 concluded 10 years after the blight was ended. Figured we'd get another timeskip in DAI and it would equal a few decades, 2 at least.

The way to make these darkspawn seem cool is, imo, to give them cooler armor and keep their appearance close to what it is now. The darkspawn look like what a warped and twisted human would look like. Same with the dwarves and the elves. We don't have goblins, orcs, and freaking mange ridden werewolves now for enemies but actual twisted versions of the species. Sort of look like the natural progression of ghouls, tainted to a more advanced stage.
But enough about that, onto armor. Their armor looked way cooler in DAO, and I think having ones that don't look quite so scavenged and more corrupted looking would be pretty good. Awakening and their intelligent darkspawn had a pretty good look going for them. That might be a good place to revisit and plot out from.

Naw. DA:I seems to be taking place within a year after the events of Asunder which in turn was a year after DA2.
This is indicated by the implications that the Orlesian Civil War is still starting and the creation of the Inqusition coinciding with the annulment of the Nevarran Accords.
I'll be surprised if the devs shoved us into a world 10 years AFTER the beginning of several crucial events rather than the beginning in where the issues are red-hot.

That looks really good, actually. Though I disagree with tanning them up. They are a race of diseased, underground dwellers. They should look really pale.

The scavenged look was what they were going for though. It makes no sense for mindless creatures to make better and more exquisite armor than we do.

I argue that the darkspawn could be a variety from gritty, rotting brown to pale, ashy Falmer-looking creatures.
I mean why not?

Hmm, I suppose that works. They probably don't think about bathing, and they live underground, so they could also be darker from years of dust caking onto their skin, making them look gritty that way too. I was thinking tan as in a sun tan.
