What's wrong with DA2's Darkspawn?
Looks quite ferocious to me.
a] That's not what they look like in-game
b] That's just a zombie. We have enough undead in dragon-age without the darkspawn looking undead too
c] The coif still looks stupid

I never liked how they looked in DA2 and i'm pretty sure they'll look close to they looked like in DA2 mixed with how they look in WOT which isn't really all that terrifying and kinda goofy.
Though I'm sure some people have seen them before, here's how they look in WOT.
I prefer the shrieks, they look more elfy than before. I do hope we'll be able to see their faces though.

I think only the Shriek Alphas will have that helmet on them.
Thought the Darkspawn in Awakenings were illustrated well; generally my particular favorites in the series.
Geez, even DA2 looks better than those pics.
Those shrieks look awesome. I don't mind the genlocks being more gorilla-like--at least the hurlocks lost those hideous chainmail-hood-things and actually look scary.
Agreed.at least the hurlocks lost those hideous chainmail-hood-things and actually look scary.
Bioware seems to be blending much of what they liked about Dragon Age II with what the fans loved about Dragon Age: Origins. This comes across in gameplay, customization, art design, and more. I think the Darkspawn will follow this trend by taking the more "unique" design of DA2 and combining it with the more fearsome look of DAO. While everyone liked the look in Origins, they didn't look much different from Orcs in other fantasy settings. The look in DA2 was far more unique, but do to the crappy engine, it looked like they were putties from Power Rangers. I think Bioware has found a balance for this next game.
We must transcend these notions of DAO and DA2 darkspawn. In DA2, there were no darkspawn. ![]()
I'm hoping they redesign them for something in between.
Their monkey movement in DA2 just made them comical and their appearance was too similar to skeletons imo.

If the DA2 Darkspawn actually looked like that I'd be okay with it
though I still feel the Hurlocks armor should redesigned
Just played through the games again in preparation for DA:I, and I gotta say I forgot how strange the darkspawn looked in DA2 compared to those in DAO.Take Hurlocks as an example. While they were tall and muscular, thy became way smaller and slimmer in DA2.The darkspawn generally looked more comical than anything else.
I hope they go back to the old design, because they simply made them look more brutish.

That actually looks kind of good. I would actually like that look, with a little more of the nastiness that the DA:O darkspawn had. But, as is always the case, concept art doesn't always equal the real thing. Jerky, comical movements... just bad animation all around, from the way they opened their mouths...they were just badly realized. I really hope there's a redesign.
If we're going to fight darkspawn again, I'd like to see some serious hurlock vanguards return, horned helmets and all.
I would like to see the Awakened and the Children again.
I really hope that any Awakened will have a separate design compared to the run of the mill Darkspawn; they looked good in the Awakening Expansion, but the hurlock alphas in DA 2 didn't look very imposing, and their models didn't lend themselves well to being able to speak; what with that bag on their head and all.
Now the Children, I hope that BioWare doesn't change them too much, I loved the mix of creepy insect and body horror that they encompassed, and the first time one of those little grubs grew legs and started chasing after me was an especially startling experience. The Children are supposed to be something that even the Darkspawn fear; so BioWare don't be afraid to draw inspiration from 'The Thing', Dead Space's Necromorphs, Halo's The Flood, Warframe's Infested, etc. to make them even more disturbing.
And I am looking forward to how they will look using the Frostebite 3 engine; especially when they feed and 'evolve' on the battlefield. ![]()
Maybe it was just nostalgia speaking, but I thought I preferred the darkspawn in DAO. After playing again recently (and currently), I'm finding them... kind of silly looking. I mean, Genlocks and Hurlocks look like they have smiles on their faces, and it's the worst in cutscenes. Happy smiles, not menacing smiles. It's really unnerving...which I suppose could make them scarier, but it's a strange tactic, to be sure.
Cheese.

I do enjoy the sheer epicness of Ogres in DAO, however.
Pretty much all darkspawn looked kind of silly in DA2 to me, with the exception of the new variants in Legacy.

To anyone- If you start counting all the sharp angles in that DA2 pic and tell me you couldn't reach 100+, you lie
Anyway, perhaps they can find a creepy medium.
One thing that I feel that should be changed back to DA:O Darkspawn would be the Emissaries. Why were they made into a completely separate Darkspawn species in DA 2, when you had Genlock Emissaries, and Hurlock Emissaries in the first game?
Also the DA 2 Genlocks look a little too gorilla-like. I have nothing against having Genlocks be more imposing, but the designs in DA 2: Legacy made it seem like all Genlocks could do was hold an over-sized shield and/or throw barrels at an Italian Plumber.
Design to serve the purposes and fill in some anrrative.
Darkspawn in Origins seemed fairly tribal. They had flairs of decoration on their armor, they had grotesque art in the ways they laid out bodies of the vanquished. It implied a culture, albeit a violent one, though that narrative is at odds with the idea they are fully crazed and mindless.
That's what Dragon Age 2's art reported to correct. The armor became simple plates of metal quickly fashioned for purpose with no ornament. But at the same time they came to look more human. They were like bizarre ghouls, not a race of their own. It wasn't as interesting. And the way they moved was ridiculous.

That is a big part of the reason why I liked the DA:O/DA:A Darkspawn over the DA 2 Darkspawn, they had more personality and depth of character. The Darkspawn might have had a more "unique" look in DA 2, but we lost all of their character, and the Darkspawn, as a whole, seemed to be a whole lot less intelligent.
The DA:O Darkspawn were not mindless beasts, their macabre art, their structures, their cold hearted laughter as they slaughtered their foes; all of this pointed to a cunning enemy. In fact the Codex in DA:O says that even un-Awoken Emissaries could speak to the other races of Thedas. The DA 2 Darkspawn (IMO) lost all of that. They didn't look nearly as threatening; but even ignoring their appearance and animations; they lost all notion of evil, cunning intelligence that they had.
It continues to perplex me that the question of what the generic monsters will look like inspires such rancorous debate.

Different priorities for different fans.
For example, I cannot understand the ungodly amount of threads and fan effort that goes into discussing romance options and Knight Captain Cullen in particular.
That and they were grey and colorless.
Sorry, I loved the look of the Darkspawn in DAO. Especially the Alphas, Ogres, and emissaries. The Hurlocks right before the battle of Ostagar in the cutscenes were far cooler than anything in DA2.
