Any word on if they are going back to DAO darkspawn or sticking with DA2 darkspawn

Maybe it was just nostalgia speaking, but I thought I preferred the darkspawn in DAO.

I do enjoy the sheer epicness of Ogres in DAO, however.

Pretty much all darkspawn looked kind of silly in DA2 to me, with the exception of the new variants in Legacy.

Agreed on the happy darkspawn.  That was always... odd.  The best DAI is going to be a hybrid of DAO and DA2.  I'd like the DAO looks with the DA2 animations.  We know we're going to see a bunch of new variations in how enemies do thangs, just from the "leaked" and released vids.

I think a hybrid between DAO and DA2 Darkspawn would be best

But I do feel that Orges should be reverted back to their DAO design

The ideas Matt Rhodes had about the darkspawn that generated the change we saw in DA2 were pretty good. The darkspawn in DAO didn't look like their original races enough, and their armor looked so advanced it was hard to see them as a brutal and essentially braindead race they were. In DA2 they gave them more simplistic armor and tried to make them look more like sick humans, dwarves and qunari (no shrieks were seen as far as I remember) so that we'd stop and think about how horrible the entire blight thing was, and that the monsters we had to kill could have been normal people. Sadly the darkspawn looked more like clowns, and didn't really create this vibe of horror that they wanted. The only darkspawn in DA2 that looked good imo was the hurloc alpha in the Legacy DLC.

The idea Matt Rhode espoused with the design are also confusing two completely different things.

-We wanted to show that the Taint hadn’t just lead to pointy-teeth monsters, but that it was a sickness affecting people who used to be Human, Elven, Dwarven and Qunari.

Because that's not a Darkspawn. That's a ghoul.

DA2 was a little late to try unringing the Broodmother bell. Especially when Awakening went to lengths to reinforce that they were their own people, not just sick and crazy.

That's a fine mob, but it isn't a darkspawn. The only source material that justifies the size is Qunari, and that is not an ogre.

Also, who puts spikes facing the warrior on a shield!?

It continues to perplex me that the question of what the generic monsters will look like inspires such rancorous debate.

Hey, if you're playing a zombie game, you want the zombies to look good. Well, horrifying anyway. In a fantasy game, you want the monsters to look good, and the different varieties of monsters to look different.

That's kinda the thing though - and I wasn't gonna follow up to that point before now - it's that I don't in any respect consider Dragon Age to be about monsters.  Even when the goal was literally stopping the monsters.  To me the darkspawn are a sideshow to, or speedbumps on the path towards, far more compelling conflicts and questions.  I understand that I'm hardly the one who gets to prioritize every aspect of the game for everyone else, though.  The only practical consequence to my position is the one I've implied, which is that I don't much care what color or shape the obstacles I barely take notice of happen to look like.

But as you and others pointed out, everyone's got their own perfectly valid priorities.  Argue on and don't mind me, heh.

One thing that I feel that should be changed back to DA:O Darkspawn would be the Emissaries. Why were they made into a completely separate Darkspawn species in DA 2, when you had Genlock Emissaries, and Hurlock Emissaries in the first game?

Also the DA 2 Genlocks look a little too gorilla-like. I have nothing against having Genlocks be more imposing, but the designs in DA 2: Legacy made it seem like all Genlocks could do was hold an over-sized shield and/or throw barrels at an Italian Plumber.

I blame you if we now have a special Genlock Alpha that throws barrels at the Inquisitor.

Clownspawn (now with monkey walk!) was a bad idea. Origins rotten face style was much better, and atleast they looked like the races they came from.

I would accept such a Darkspawn if, and only if, the PC yells out "Itsa me! The Inquisitor!" Every time you jumped over said barrels.

That is exactly how I see the transition between games as well.

The Darkspawn are not zombies or ghouls, they are not some infected human/elf/dwarf/qunari. They are Darkspawn.
