To be fair, I seem to recall many people complaining about femshep's "man-walk" in ME (1 and maybe 2, I don't know) and I'm fairly certain those complaining were not all, or even mostly, men. Men and women do move differently thanks to sexual dimorphism. Just because people want to see that difference reflected doesn't mean they want it taken to DA2's extent.

I was one of those who complained about the walk of Femshep, though not to the extent of others as I carried a male shep through the games.

FemShep walked like a gorilla. Sat like a dude. She basically had the animations of bro-shep and they were just given to her because animating her differently was probably too costly, whether that be time, funding, etc etc

Its the opposite problem that DA2 had. FemShep's problem was that her gait was an afterthought- they just handed her the male animations because it was easier. DA2 gave Hawke her own gait, but it went waaay too far in the, "exists to be sexy" zone.

Middle ground. We, or actually I shouldn't speak for anyone but myself so I, would like to see a middle ground. A gait that I can take seriously. One that a woman would clearly have, but one where it looks like she's not trying to get me to drop my pants and start spinning right round baby right round like a record baby right round round round

I didn't mind the walking strut so much, though I would prefer that the female walk in DAI to be less... pronounced. But my PCs jog a lot, and that female run in DA2 was ridiculous.

Edit to add: I agree that Lara's animations are a good example of how the female PC should move.

I like to slow my character down to a walk in the RPGs I play, as I don't think it makes sense to run literally every single moment, so I'd appreciate a good walking animation too.

I feel like crap that my male Warden in DAO was the bees knees but my female Hawke was lame sauce, so I wanna give a female lead another go around, hopefully without being a disaster this time(disaster referring to the events of DA2 and the fact I'm not a fan of the game).

I assume I'll be playing a female lead in Inquisition(Elsaquisitor, mayhaps?), so I'd appreciate it if as she's walking from place to place it didn't look like she was trying to salsa dance like she's in Cuba.

Agreed (expecially on Elsaquisitor :P). Nice avatar by the way.
Having Cassandra walking differently from Vivienne gives me some hope in this regard. While my first character will be male, I'm planning on rolling some female Inquisitors (if the game will turn out to be good enough for replaying it). I'd like a less exaggerated walking animation.

I'm not gonna have hope until it(the game) is right in front of me. I've learned that things often change from advertising, what you read on forums, and what you get, sometimes to a ridiculous amount. That or you just end up disappointed with whats there.

I just had a thought: will the running animations differ a lot between each race? I'm trying to picture a female Dwarf or Qunari with DA:2's running animation and I can't see it being anything other than comical (not that the animation in question wasn't already comical to being with).

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Remember that there were different animations for walking through mud and uphill and such in the Demo. I don't see the Inquisitor strutting through a muddy bog or up a mountain slope.

I wouldn't put it past them. We'll see, anyway.

I wish you could choose your walk because I would keep the girly walk but those that hate it could pick something else. Keep dreaming right?

I'd like the same, but I wouldn't get my hopes high about it.

I'll be honest, the only reason I complained about Fem Shep using the Male Shep's animations was because, let's face it, they weren't exactly that great to begin with.

In return for giving you a manlier walk I want males to be more muscular and walk like an angry bodybuilding bareknuckle boxer.

I really like Lara's animations as well, but it is more because they perfectly fit the character. In the new tomb raider she is just an average girl who is thrown into a huge adventure- and she moves like a regular girl who has been suddenly thrown into that position.

I don't necessarily have a problem with all swaying animations- in fact I thought the run fit Isabela quite well, just not Aveline or a lot of female Hawkes. Also, a lot of people dislike female Shepards animations because they were the same as male Shepards, whereas I felt that they fit my tough-as-nails, fairly masculine female Shepard perfectly.

The bottom line is that everybody runs and moves differently regardless of gender, and while I appreciate that they cannot always create unique animations for every character they should make the default be the fairly standard and neutral animations, like the ones Lara has. Masculine animations and overly feminine "sexy" animations are both equally valid depending on the character, but neither should be the default.

weeeell

Yeah not in so many word but..I think I said pretty much the same thing.

It would be ideal to have different options..but those cost money. So if I had to chose...a more natural/non descriptive walk/run would do just fine instead of a characteristic one. At least in a role playing game- where you-the player give your character a character..so to speak.

But to be honest..Lara ran like a normal woman. There was nothing special/character-specific in her movement to say- uuu this is how "the" Lara walks! What I mean is any other female character could run like that and it would be completely acceptable. Cause it was..normal.

Regarding the femshep walk- yeah it was manly. It didn't really bother me, because I understand- the same animation, budget etc... what I meant was that IF the option exists- that female characters have a different set of movements than the male characters...then let it be natural. With no added characteristics..UNLESS those are optional. Then wohoo and I'm a happy panda and all....

I would love to replay the game multiple times with distinct male/female characters..and would also loooove the option to play a guy, with a sassy animation...so...in a perfect world...with unlimited resources. Please! Multiple animations for males and females!

But..I'm a realist. And I'd be happy enough with the basic effort..after all I don't play bioware games for the pretty animations...

Some day in the future If they for whatever reason can only afford to have one gait for both sexes, lets have a womanly gait be designed and then stick male characters with it as an afterthought. rofl

I wonder how well that would go over

They might do that as some sort of bizarre easter egg quest. If they threw in the equivalent character of Sheogorath/Discord, it'd be funny to have him place a "strut curse" on the PC. There's always the FF7 Cloud-Cross-Dressing direction, too. I could only see this employed as some sort of hidden quest, though. DA:I seems to be quite serious in nature, based on the previews.

As far as "Strut Customization", well... if they want to put that in, I'm alright with it.

Hah, there's a problem in game culture with animations though, isn't it? Stick female characters with male animations- perfectly acceptable and gets hand waved. Do the opposite, and its quite obviously a joke we're either meant to laugh at or simply not take seriously. :/

Gotta give DA this though, at least there ARE different gaits.

I'm very much for different animations, but I think there's also a more pragmatic explanation to this: A female warrior in armor and everything is in fact more likely to not exactly walk like a lady than the male counterpart is to walk with his hips swaying.

[playful sarcasm]I'd rather they made the walk/jog/run gender-neutral and base the animation off of West Side Story, just people snapping fingers all the way through the Inquisition[/playful sarcasm]

You are being sarcastic but now I kind of want this  :D

It's not so much game culture as culture in general. A woman walking or dressing like a man isn't really noteworthy at all, but a man walking or dressing like a woman is a big deal.

I now hope there is some form of exaggerated hip-swaying walking animation just so I can mod it for male characters.

Envisioning it now.

Yes. I need this.

Ah such a great point :) I'm in favor of choice, too, and anything that lets you customize your character. But if they don't give us that choice, then the default should be neutral.
