I want male qunari's to walk like some kind of murderous psycho... like the occasional body twitch, the shoulder-width spread feet, heavy steps and arms a little out like how wannabe tough guys do.

I've never walked or ran like FemHawke. I think I would break my spine or sth if I did.

The way she walks and runs makes me cringe and think of the pain she's suffering....

There's nothing painful about the walk, and the run looks more like she's doing the "I have to pee!" dance to me.

You know...Why can't she just walk like a normal person? Would that be so horrible?

but how does a normal person walk? Like I said before, what's normal to you, may not be to me.

In this case, I'd say a normal, athletic, fairly militaristic person, given how much combat she'd engage in.

That would fit Cassandras personality very well! And possibly my Human Warrior, but majority of my PCs wouldn't walk that way. I know it'd never happen, but I'll always have that pipedream of maybe one day getting to pick a walk that matches your personaliy ^_^

The 'walk' that a fem hawke does is certainly 'normal' for a bubbly, unconcerned gallivanter.

It asserts something that may or may not be there personality wise. Something neutral would be preferable. Something in between a fem hawke and an elven female warden. Or just elven female warden.

Welp, I strut my stuff just as hard as f!hawke when I walk sometimes, so, I guess I'm a bubbly, unconcerned gallivanter, too! Good to know.

The female warden had a weird run.

How so?

The way she held out her arms. I got tired just watching her. Also, it was very stiff. Too stiff for me.

Lazily. I walk for maximum efficiency, and it's not normal. It's not a strut either, though.

Thing is, I know martial artists, soldiers, veterans; none of them strut. It's a waste of energy, and it limits your ability to change speeds rapidly. Since this is dragon age, and not exactly the home of realism, I'll make a more relevant statement. Most women, and men, do not strut. A main character who doesn't strut would be more relatable to their target audience.

Honestly, where do you get your facts from? Do you know most women? Have you tested strutting and the time and engery it takes to change speeds whilst doing so?

The simplest solution would be to make it a choice/toggle, and that's not happening probably ever. Either you have the strut or you don't Cassandra appears not to, and Vivienne appear to have some kind of sashay. So. I guess we'll see.

I didn't know this was a war simulator, either.

Are you really arguing that most people DO strut? I've seen thousands of people in the course of my life, and I could count the number that strut on my hands.

The whole game is about a war. A fantasy war, with demons and dragons, but still a war. We're a military general, that's why we're running around capturing and fortifying our keeps. Our character in this game and in origins is a soldier. Hawke was a veteran of ostagar.

Edit: and yes, I have tested the time and energy shifting between different walking methods. Like I said, I spent months learning to walk with higher efficiency.

First of all, I don't expect that many men strut. And I am arguing that there's a good chunk of women out there that do, but you and I are no one to say if most people as a whole do or don't, that is simply something we could never know, it's impossible.

You can be a female warrior and still want to strut your stuff while murdering demons and dragons. Who says you can't? And please don't tell me it's unrealistic.

Thousands is still a fraction compared to the total population of Earth. Not arguing that most people do strut... but still.

And just because the character is the leader of the Inquiz doesn't mean they can't have.. personality. A boring, rigid walk would be just as bad as an exaggerated hip-flail-y-walk. 'Tis a fantasy universe, not Boring Medieval Simulator #679.

Also, only non-mage Hawke was a veteran of Ostagar. Sorry,I'm just nitpicky

Yea we can. It's like wondering how many people stand with their hands clasped behind their back. Between observation, and the human tendency to fidgit, it's a fair bet that this is a minority. The same thing applies to strutting. It's not as easy or comfortable as the walking I usually see. Thus, it's a fair bet that the number of people who strut regularly are a minority.

The simplest solution is to choose one animation; the fair solution is to make a toggle.

Of course, but that's how all surveys are done. You do a small fraction of people, and you postulate from there. I'm also not worrying about people in countries I haven't been to, but Bioware isn't marketing to most of those countries anyway. You shush about mage hawke! That rat bastard had a protection from suspicion spell, and didn't share it! S/he shall be stricken from the records! Stricken I say!

How can you even try to argue that female Hawke's run was in any way normal and economic? It was not. It's not how women run, regardless of how bubbly and sexy or what-have-you their personality is. Well, maybe unless you want to play a goofus, then the arm flailing would fit right in, I imagine. Women's gait is very similar to men's. Scientific studies have performed gait analyses and compared male and females, and for most factors there were no differences. The link I posted a few pages back points to a study that specifically looked at the movements of the pelvis, and they found that women moved their hips more up and down than men, but only with a mean difference of 2 degrees. 2 degrees. That does not validate Bioware's ridiculous animation, which seems to have spawned from the fantasies of male developers. It does not call for a forced "sexy" animation to set the female characters apart from the males.

I stopped reading after "Hawke's run" because I was talking about her walk, as I have been for many pages now.

Then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree because it's impossible unless you can find me a credible soure with a fact sheet that states majority of women in this world do not strut when walking.

I agree on your fair solution.

As much as I hate that hip-cracking spine-snapping sway Femhawke has, I really hope they don't give us the same animations for both male and female, I'd like a little variance without it being too 'model strutty'.

Also, gender animation always slightly peeved me during cutscenes, I know it'd be more work to have even have separate standing animations dependant on gender during cutscenes, but it really bothers me that my female character suddenly starts standing like a wide shouldered brute or walking like she packing something in her trousers.

Or you know, just sitting...

My general opinion is that, "if I had to choose" I'd choose the DA2 method. Not because I particularly liked the female walk, but because at least they used animations meant for the model in question. A much better result than ME2 or ME3 where female Shepard was using the male Shepard animations, meant for a VERY different build and model. Not only did it look awkward, at times, but the animations beings made for another model with different proportions caused all manner of little visual glitches and breaks that never should have occurred. It looked lazy and unfinished.

For whatever flaw in the DA2 animations, and there was flaw, at least the animations matched up with the model in question, no matter how questionable the actual animations were. However, for the most part, the issue was in the walk alone. One off walking animation, in one gender, however silly looking, is, to my mind, a far lesser issue than an entire set of animations meant for the male body being haphazardly applied to the female model ME2/3 style and looking terrible, wrong and just lazy as a result. The walk, the run, of female Hawke, in DA2, simply doesn't compare. Sure, it was off, but every single animation for female Shepard in ME2/3 looked entirely and completely wrong for the model and body type present - because they were meant for another model and body type entirely.

What I'd really prefer is that they made animations unique to the male and separate animations unique to the female, and, most importantly, made both animation sets look good.

ME1 had the female walk or strut whatever you wanna call the best I reckon. Dont know what happened with ME2 & 3 though.
Dragon Age games were no better as well. In DA:O, the characters looked like they were holding a fart and was just waiting for the first person to let it go. DA2 was just way too exaggerated with that sway which I'm pretty sure was intentional.
They should just look back at ME1 and see how it was done... if that is possible or necessary.
