Never in my life have I seen a woman sway the way women do in DA2. ...Never. Can you imagine someone walking that way from their office desk (or wherever) to a water fountain? I don't know whether to laugh or pretend to be captivated. Can't they just capture a normal walk as an average person would walk on the sidewalk?
The return of the model strut . . .

I made a thread about this ages ago. My opinion still stands.
That strut should apply only if it fits the personality of the companion. Isabela, yes. Aveline, no way, (and it looked so strange for Aveline to be strutting around like that).
Vivienne is FAB, so she can strut all she wants, but Cassandra?
If Cassandra starts strutting around, it will be a WTF moment for me since she's been nothing but badass, tough, no nonsense, and she wouldn't care about being sexy during the heat of battle. The demo seems to support this since Cassandra seems to move around with neutral to masculine animations in the demo.

So true. Isabela can get away with it, but I wanted my female mage Hawke to be an absolute destroyer and that walk was killin' me.

I get that woman don't want a swaying walk but what does a natural woman walk look like to you. and don't say like a man's cause I know enough to know that's not true.
Not only women don't want that, and it's not like mans, since there is no such thing as a man walk.

Don't know if this was mentioned in previous posts, since I haven't read through this thread, but as far as the Inquisitor goes, it would be great if there was an option for the player to choose a more feminine or more masculine set of animations to avoid such scenarios (for both male and female inquisitors lol)

I don't see why that can't be an option. Dragon's Dogma has those options, and it would make the person's character a little more unique compared to the next player.

As ObiWanJesus pointed out to me, the Lara Croft animation looks like a pretty 'natural' female walk/run. I think it's best I've seen so far in terms of a plain, natural female walk in games.

At around 19:55 in the video we can see Cassandra walking. Whether the walks are tailored to specific characters or not, I'm not sure, but I'm satisfied with her stride. ![]()

You have never seen a woman run or walk before, that you have to ask this?
People can mention "wider hips" and "padding" as much as they like, but in reality those slightly wider hips and that extra bit of padding is not going to result in a widely different gait pattern compared to males. The amount of pelvic drop you see with female Hawke would only show up if something is wrong with the woman. Not "wrong" as in an insult, but "wrong" as in extreme muscle weakness or something like that. It's not economic and not natural.
http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/12165162
Comparing all women to all men, women exhibited significantly more pelvic obliquity range (mean ISD): 9.4 +/- 3.5 degrees for women and 7.4 +/- 3.4 degrees for men (p = 0.0024), and less vertical COM displacement: 3.7 +/- 0.8% of leg length for women and 3.3 +/- 0.9% for men (p = 0.0056).
Even though that difference is significant, it's only a mean difference of 2 degrees. Hardly extreme.

Yeah, I'm satisfied with Cassandra's walk, too. It's realistic, and there's no way she would be able to do a DA2 sway in heavy armor like that (I wouldn't think it possible). I can't wait to have her in my party! I like her a lot in Dawn of the Seeker.

Thinking about it, as long as we get a better run animation, I'd be content.
For most of the time, I like Kateish's gif. Graceful, purposeful and overall like someone you don't want to mess with.
Yet, I do have a girly streak. I would be a happy lady if I could walk into a Orlesan ball like this:

Sheesh I just don't understand why my female PC's walk has to be "feminine" and "sexy" and "attractive," whereas my male PC gets to walk like a normal human being.
This. So much this.

It's been already said by others, but I'd like to say it too and add my weight: I certainly prefer Hawkes swaying hips over fem!Shepards awkwardly manly walk. I mean, it was okay while in armor and stuff, and most of the time acceptable on the Normandy - but it was painful to look at during the DLC missions where she wore a dress. Please don't let that happen again. ![]()
That being said, the DA2 strut was a bit extreme. I know for sure that I'm not even able to walk like that if I try. So I'm hoping that male and female Inquisitors will have different animations - but without the overly obtrusive hip swaying.

I don't mind the strut, though it could do to be toned down a bit - just a little sway. The thing I found bizarre was that Hawke, Isabela, Aveline, Merrill and Bethany all had the sway. Made it very strange to listen to Isabela and Merrill's banter about the former having a 'swagger' when she walks considering they have the same one.
I think Fenris was the only one who seemed to have a completely unique walk/run.

I think it would be nice to have options to display such things through dialogue that lead to actions. For example if you are going to a ball, you could have 3 options of how you would like to enter and how you think you want the people to perceive you.
Other options could be flirt moves that you use on certain NPC's, that could also include sexy walking.
Imo just not during exploration while wearing armor in the mountains.

I most definitely agree. The way Lara moves - walks/runs etc in the new Tom Raider game is (well for what I've seen in games so far) the best/most realistic female movement.
And while it would be nice to have the option to chose different kinds of movement animation for different female characters...I think that just having a natural female walk instead of the 'neutral' manly animation or being stuck with the powerful, no-nonsense female warrior uncharacteristically strutting around and swaying her hips while in heavy armor...would be a major win.
So my opinion, in short is no. No more... sexy swaying/back braking hip struts for females (at least not as the only option). Please...pretty please. Thank you. ![]()

I honestly didn't notice the strut much until my brother was watching me play DA2 and asked if my character was injured because her hips look damaged. After that it was painfully clear every time I play femHawke and I grew pretty sick of it pretty quickly.

Sheesh I just don't understand why my female PC's walk has to be "feminine" and "sexy" and "attractive," whereas my male PC gets to walk like a normal human being.
Because unfortunately video game culture(and human society as a whole, really) has been about what the hetero-male wants(and I would know as I am one) at the expense of others. Even down to character gait in DA, the male walk gets no mention of, "play a male character and check out his walk, 'mrrrroooowl'" but the female one is of particular note because it just haaad to have some sex appeal thrown in.
Its weird when you have Bioware clearly wanting to be progressive with their games in certain ways yet we have this gait thing which is a bit odd. Its not even that sex appeal is a bad thing because it most certainly isn't;but when its thrown in your face, c'mon.
Imagine if the male walk was as exaggerated. Huffing and puffing with every step to match the lady's flailing arms, shoulders flying five feet to the left and right to match the hip sway. Jeeeeezus.
[playful sarcasm]I'd rather they made the walk/jog/run gender-neutral and base the animation off of West Side Story, just people snapping fingers all the way through the Inquisition[/playful sarcasm]

To be fair, I seem to recall many people complaining about femshep's "man-walk" in ME (1 and maybe 2, I don't know) and I'm fairly certain those complaining were not all, or even mostly, men. Men and women do move differently thanks to sexual dimorphism. Just because people want to see that difference reflected doesn't mean they want it taken to DA2's extent.Because unfortunately video game culture(and human society as a whole, really) has been about what the hetero-male wants(and I would know as I am one) at the expense of others. I really like Lara's animations as well, but it is more because they perfectly fit the character. In the new tomb raider she is just an average girl who is thrown into a huge adventure- and she moves like a regular girl who has been suddenly thrown into that position.
I don't necessarily have a problem with all swaying animations- in fact I thought the run fit Isabela quite well, just not Aveline or a lot of female Hawkes. Also, a lot of people dislike female Shepards animations because they were the same as male Shepards, whereas I felt that they fit my tough-as-nails, fairly masculine female Shepard perfectly.
The bottom line is that everybody runs and moves differently regardless of gender, and while I appreciate that they cannot always create unique animations for every character they should make the default be the fairly standard and neutral animations, like the ones Lara has. Masculine animations and overly feminine "sexy" animations are both equally valid depending on the character, but neither should be the default.
