I know dual classing questions are on forums all over the internet, but I have a couple questions on specific mechanics that have been only poorly and vaguely answered. I get the basics. I get that doubled-up proficiency points added during the interim-dualing stage will disappear.

It is said that when you get your 1st class back, you get all the abilities of the first class, as long as the following hierarchy table is followed: cleric>fighter>thief>mage.

I'm planning a fighter>mage build.

Let's say that as a fighter I put 0 pips in two-weapon style.

Once I get my fighter levels back, do I get to start putting mage-earned proficiency points into two-weapon style?

What if I originally put 2 pips into two-weapon style? Can I eventually use mage proficiency points to get it to 3?

What if I originally put 0 pips into long swords? Can I eventually bring it to 1 pip? What if I started with 4 pips...can I bring it to 5?

To sum up:

Are the post-dualing-process--let's call it stage 3--proficiency points completely unrestricted as regards the first class (cleric builds excepted)?

If they are restricted, what are the limits?

Thanks!

Once you've regained the abilities of your first class you have the full choice of proficiencies open to them - so the answer to all the questions you raise is yes (remember though that you will be gaining proficiency points at the rate of mages not fighters and therefore won't get a lot of them after dualling).

Cuttysark: A good way to look at it is a dual follows the same rule as a multi-class, except not limited to 2 per weapon unlike a multi-class fighter/mage, e.g. with mage proficiencies you can put pips in two weapon style, bec you are a fighter/mage for all intents and purposes. Yes, you can use mage proficiency to put to 3 pips in two weapon style. Same, you can use mage proficiency to bring 4 pips in long sword to 5. Of course you only get 1 pip per 6 levels with mage, so that won't be very many...Being able to put ***** pips into a weapon may indeed be one of the biggest advantages of being a fighter dualed to mage rather than a multi.
