Now I know they say that soldiers can use all weapon classes, but on the Mass Effect wikia website it shows that they can use: assault rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns, heavy pistols, heavy weapons and light machine guns. In the Bioware soldier class video, it shows that soldiers can use: assault rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns and heavy pistols, it doesn't show LMG and SMG. So are soldiers really able to use every single weapon class in the game?
They could in the first game, why not the second?

Care to list the things that are different between the first and second games to realize how unintelligent that response sounds?Aradace wrote...

Calm down, He was just trying to help. I wanted to choose vanguard but since they cant use asault rifles I might stick to Soldier.

I'm going to guess that they don't have SMG training, though. And it makes sense.
Its distinctly not included in the "Soldier intro" video. It's completely outclassed by the shotgun in close range and the AR at medium range. In addition, we've been told that each class can be trained in ONE additional weapon proficiency. How could Soldiers still get trained in an additional weapon if they were already fully proficient in all of them?
Lacking SMG training was the design team's way of allowing the Soldier to still get the "1 additional training" but not leaving out a weapon that they would miss.
For all we know, they HAD to leave one weapon untrained to allow the system to work properly in case the class fulfilled the preconditions for an additional weapon slot.

Machine guns in ME2 are being treated as Soldier-specific assault rifle variants. Also, if you can use an AR, why use an SMG at all?
Because a huge machine gun is unwieldly to maneuver in close combat situations? A quick switch to a light and agile SMG will make quick work of things that are at close range.

SMG's are best for close to midrange, while AR is best suited for long range fighting. Also SMG have a higher shooting frequency then AR's.

SMG an HEAVY PISTOL are default for EVERY class
Not absolutely true. This was never stated.
Look at the Soldier intro video. No SMG listed. Just because all other classes have it doesn't mean its default.
I stand by my "the adding a weapon specialization system breaks if a class doesn't have an untrained weapon type".

While some guys had to do the biotic or tech trainning course during the last vacation, these guys choose an intensive N7 weapon trainning in Macapá's boot camp.
So yes, they can use all weapons... even the special ones, like the LMG.

Which makes a ton of sense in real life... dunno if that'll be the case in game... if i remember from the last game, you moved no differently using a shotgun, pistol or AR.

Combat has made a pretty big change from what I've been hearing from the devs, the Good Doctors, and previewers/reviewers.

According to the soldier video, no, soldiers can't use SMGs.
Uh, what made you think that?
