According to the soldier video, no, soldiers can't use SMGs.

Uh, what made you think that?

masters of all other forms of weaponry and ammunition types

From the website.

Have you seen the video? It specifically shows heavy pistol in the soldier character class screen, but not SMG, whereas other classes that can use SMGs specifically show heavy pistol and SMG.

Christina, the dev, mentioned every weapon type in the game for soldier, apart from SMG.

That would be retarded if Soldiers wouldn't be able to use every single weapon class in the game. What Omega-202 said about leaving one untrained sounds right to me.

@blank1, if everyone should use ARs instead of SMGs then why should SMGs exist at all both in games and real life?

In Mass Effect, they may not have included movement speed when factoring in weapons, but SMGs have positives over ARs.

If they can't they can probably research it like any other class.

From Soldier reveal video it might look like some weapons share the slot.

As in if you equip a LMG it takes up AR slot. Maybe even the AR takes up the SMG slot. 3 tiers of fast fire weapons.

Speculation all of this, ofc.

I don't have a video to proove this or even a article, but I remember one of the dev's saying that the heavy weapons are in the middle of the back, shot guns at the bottom like normal, AR and LMG on the right, Sniper on the Left, pistol is left holster SMG right.

Machine guns in ME2 are being treated as Soldier-specific assault rifle variants. Also, if you can use an AR, why use an SMG at all?

Because a huge machine gun is unwieldly to maneuver in close combat situations?  A quick switch to a light and agile SMG will make quick work of things that are at close range.

Which makes a ton of sense in real life... dunno if that'll be the case in game... if i remember from the last game, you moved no differently using a shotgun, pistol or AR.

Christina Norman confirmed that all classes will be able to learn to use assault rifles

Knew this topic would eventually show up. Of course I figured out back in early December that soldiers wouldn't be using SMGs or have access to them (just how me and Jav a bunch of other forumnites figured out that the Engineer would be wearing a HP on one hip, the SMG on the other hip, and be sporting the heavy weapon on their back.

AR is basically an improved SMG. A SMG is basically a pistol with an improved rate of fire. A pistol is basically... are you getting the picture?

Saying you want an SMG and an AR is redundant.

Soldier Video

0:22

Weapon Training: Assault Rifle, Shotgun, Heavy Pistol, Sniper Rifle.

No submachine gun. A basic unmodified soldier can't use submachine guns

In addition, we've been told that each class can be trained in ONE additional weapon proficiency.

Wait... Granted I haven't been keeping up with the updates on ME2 as well as others, but if that's the case then wouldn't that mean Soldiers wouldn't be the only ones to use assualt rifles? Because I would totally stick with Vanguard and just pick up weapon proficiency in the assault rifle.
