Apparently, people all over Europe are tired of the free-to-play-but-not-really-free business model games have adopted, where they resort to in-app purchases instead of making the game a paid app or including a subscription model. Well, the European Commission is meeting Thursday and Friday and there's the possibility that they'll make free games, actually, free.

“The use of the word ‘free’ (or similar unequivocal terms) as such, and without any appropriate qualifications, should only be allowed for games which are indeed free in their entirety, or in other words which contain no possibility of making in-app purchases, not even on an optional basis.”

Here's where I read the article:

And here's the original source:

So, what do you think? Do you think the EC will do something about it? And, if so, what would that mean for the rest of the world?

Don't think it'll affect nything if it comes to pass imo. The people making the games would probably just make the game cost more/ no longer make it free to account for their inability to add these micro-transactions.

True, but they'd also sell less because people would have to choose.

Good. I hope these shitty games made to pry on peoples worst instincts die out as soon as possible.

Micros is the cancer of gaming industry alongside drm so it's a step in the right direction and we'll see how much later, i would rather pay indie price for indie F2P and full for AAA F2P so long there's no micros and they are well done. i'm tired of all ultra shitty business models made only for draining as much money as it can from your wallet steady and slowly, not to mention many F2P models encourage **** design in the game.

If that passes, they'll just stop calling their games "free". They're not going to change their business model, unfortunatly

Yep, nothing will change. They'll just stop making them or call them something else. Nothing in business is free (except overtime and interns).

This will change nothing. Right now most players are already aware that if game is free, there most likely will be optional purchases inside. Call this type of game whatever you want, even "pay to win" instead of "free". People will still play them, and many of them will spend money in them.
