Achivements that actually take work to achieve

I've played DA:O 6 times and still haven't managed to get all the achievements. Meanwhile, it's possible and even easy to get all of DA2's in one playthrough. I understand there's been a whole slow movement in the achievements community to make it easier to Platinum games by making it so only one playthrough is needed, no missable achievements, etc. Which is fine, I guess. But I really like achivements in the World of Warcraft style (which I haven't played for years so if they've also changed sorry :()), where getting all of them is nearly impossible and it's really fun to see how many you can get and how many weird things you have to do to get them.

Is it possible to have in-game achievements that are separate from the Playstation Trophies/Xbox Gamerscore so there's no complaining about a game being too hard to plat. Especially for those of us who play Dragon Age on PC, where there's no real overall achievement mechanic, it seems like a huge waste. A second set of challenge achivements that don't apply to gamerscore or trophy count would be so welcome. I love achivements like "max out every tree with the player character," and "complete all romances," and "get to specified points in the game without the PC dying." I like the challenge and it's neat to get a little badge to your name if you can do them.

I've actually had entire DA:O characters inspired by trying to plan a character who would get certain achievements :D

Anyways. THINK ABOUT IT. I think it would be rad.

Blair Brown from the Bioware team said they were looking at what type of achievements the game could include in a thread last year. So they are looking at them.

In terms of PC, I know many games on Steam have achievements tied to them, although I don't know if games through Origin (which DA:I would definitely be released on) have such an achievement function or not.

I wouldn't mind for some more hidden achievements. Where am forced to do new and different things to get them. Course after so many playthroughs I would just google it, but you know for the first few times.

I'm all for this. I'm an absolute achievement ******, so anything that increases replay value and gets me to have to work for achievements is good in my book.

@OP:

How did you get both the "Support Mages 5 times" and "Support Templars 5 times" acievements in a single playthrough when there are less then 10 choices in that regard?

I actually really dislike "hidden" achievements. It just leads to googling them all. I prefer achievements which are clear, but very difficult. Killing the Harvester on nightmare, or making it through a playthrough without ever falling in battle (if those were restricted to the highest difficulty, that would be even better), etc.

Actually, I've had a harder time completing the DA2 list. The only achievement in the whole franchise that I don't have is the one for completing a whole act of DA2 without anyone falling in battle. Finishing all of DAO without my main character fainting was easy by comparison. (I played an archer on that run. If someone was hitting her at all, it meant something had gone horribly wrong with my strategy.) I'd probably have it by now if I didn't insist on playing on Nightmare at all times, but as it is that last achievement eludes me.

I'd love to see more challenging achievments, though. Beating the Harvester on Nightmare was fun.

Fair dink. I think there should probably be a mix of easy/hard. Like "Side with A", and "Side with B", but also "Lore: find all lore points in [Area]" or "Kill Dragon in under two minutes" or whatever the hard ones would be, eeefh.

One thing I think is important is that they limit the AMOUNT of cheevos though. Just looking at Civ V's is enough to do my head in. My sister is a clocking completionist, she feels obligated to get every single collectable and every single cheevo and will use guides to make sure she does. If there are a hundred cheevos (let alone difficult ones) she, and others like her, are going to lose appeal fast.

Or the "reach Kirkwall with three different classes".

I have all DA2 achievements but not all of them from DAO (who the heck played the Darkspawn Chronicles more than once for achievements?!). Difficult to get achievements actually tend to annoy the mess out of me. I prefer they reward you as you play through the story, with achievements sprinkled here and there.

I'm still missing 2 achievements from Skyrim (werewolf and vampire skill tree completion), since playing as creatures was not at all to my liking. But whatever; ultimately I think achievements/trophies mean very little to most people who play for characters and story more than anything else.

It took me ages to do all of the Origins cheeovs. Eventually, I made my ex do the Chronicles because I didn't really like that one.

(Trick to getting the skill tree in Skyrim, turn into a vampire, eat tamriel, then reload old save. That's what I did. Same thing with being werewolf.)

I liked the origins cheevos that gave you items for your next playthrough. And in ME, where you got bonuses once you got them. I don't care for difficulty achievements because I think that anyone should have the opportunity to attempt an achievement regardless of the difficulty level they choose to play on. I do hope the achievements are more than just plotline ones, however. I like the ones you have to try to get instead of getting through just merely playing.

I hope they keep the single player and multiplayer separate as I can never get all the achievements in ME3 as I never play multiplayer.

Oh the worst thing about achievments/trophies is the multiplayer ones.

If a game is 90% single player, I shouldn't have to grind multiplayer to get a platinum trophy.

You need to play on Insanity for all the cheevos in ME3, but you don't have to play multiplayer. The 100% galactic readiness stuff can be done via the Galaxy at War website.

@caradoc2000...

They show up in my ME3 achievements that are not done and I have not touched on multiplayer so it means I can never get all of them

I really like it when an achievement encourages me to try something I normally wouldn't consider, like a certain specialization, weapon, spell/power combo, or ending. The worst kind of achievements are the counting/collecting ones. They're boring and aggravating when you can't find that last one.

I don't like difficulty based achievements like beating the game on hard/nightmare or stuff like that.

I like achievements that are hard for other reasons, like earning the respect of the Arishok and things like that.

I want achievements that don't rely on the difficulty-level crutch.

The point of achievements is to sell more video games. It's just a marketing ploy to con people to "catch 'em all". You can't let Johnny from next door have more than you! It's also a way to fool people into thinking the game is worth replaying when it isn't.

I have all the Origins achievements on both PS3 and pc (although one of the chronicles' achievements doesn't show on PS3 due to a bug). And not just to be a completionist. I might never have realized how fun or challenging it was to play a certain type of build if I didn't try to go for all of the achievements. I really enjoyed the game (although I suppose that's obvious), and part of that is because I played it so many different ways. Also a path I didn't think I would enjoy I did. A good mix of achievements inspires me to play differently and ultimately adds to my enjoyment. Harvester nightmare was one of the most challenging of all battles.

I think Origins has a good mix of different types of achievements. Some based on build, some on performing x activity a specified number of times. I didn't even mind that some were based on difficulty level. I'm of 2 minds about hidden, or rather secret, achievements. Maybe if you've completed all the other achievements you can see what the achievement is, you've earned the right. Otherwise people will look it up on the internet (as I did). That does get frustrating, trying to figure out what you're doing wrong that you can't get that last achievement or two because you don't know what it is.

Overall I agree that DA2's achievements were too few and too simple. You could certainly get a lot of them in one playthrough. I liked the achievement about finding Enigma of Kirkwall pieces. I like learning the lore and pieces of a puzzle even if finding it all out brought up more questions than it answered.

@metatheurgist: If I didn't like the game the first time I played I wouldn't have spent a lot of time getting all the achievements. Getting all the achievements pushed me out of my comfort zone and ended up adding to my fun and the replay value of the game. Achievements can't force either. I never saw the point of living by 'keeping up with the jones's.'

In short, I want a lot of achievements requiring multiple playthroughs to acquire. If the game is good I'll be willing to invest the time. I want a lot of variety. I can't recall an achievement I didn't like or found a waste of time in either DAO or DA2.

Sometimes you get bonus weapons/armor for your next playthrough
