You aren't the first daughter to make such a comment about their Asian mom. At the time I had to ask the question what was meant by that and they gave an example of where their mom just turned up unannounced at their doorstop stating they were going to stay for 2 weeks. Curious to hear your stories.

 

I'm sorry, but I would slam the door shut in their face. If you don't make the effort to let me know, I wont make the effort to let you in. ESPECIALLY if it was my family, but explaining that would start a long story that would leave me accused of whining, so meh.

Why should I respect people who don't respect me? My family has never been anything to me beyond some horrible people I've had to put up with. Didn't see any of them even trying to find out if I was alive when I was homeless (literally sleeping on park benches). Why should I care about them?

 

Mother-in-law on the other hand, I like her, like all my in-laws that I have met, actually.

It might be culturally taboo for you, but at some point you have to say no more, for you own personal health. Every time you sit there and take it, you shrink a little more inside. You are effectively letting her mentally beat you up. Just because they are your parent doesn't mean it isn't bullying.

Like, I still talk to her. It's a love-hate thing. I try to put boundaries on her. When she acts up, I put her on extinction. Sad thing is, I know she needs help. She's been through a lot, like escaping the Khmer Rouge and leaving her mom behind. But at the same it, it doesn't excuse her crappy behaviors.

Whatever makes you happy, sets an example for your (future) daugther and not let you feel guilty the day when she is not there anymore.

Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.

To be fair, I'm a bit eh about having kids. I'm fine if I do and fine if I don't.

 

Totally going to read the Mass Effect novels to them though if I do XD Might swap out all the talk of guns with things like glitter though to make it child friendly. I'll read them Mass Effect, and the Batman Arkham Knight books, and Brandon Sanderson... I'll skip the suicide squad comics though. Because I don't want my kid to end up a total nut job. If I ever have kids, I'll have to be a responsible father... so no suicide squad for them.

I'd like to have little Onis running around in the near future. My professional and financial progress are near that comfort level. Though I wouldnt mind not having children either. I just like shaping peoples lives in a positive way while also preparing them for life out of school. Never really had anyone teach me how to be a man, just had to learn it the hard way. Kinda like my ME3 mp progress.
