So, I got myself a copy of ME 1, thinking ME 2 looks awesome and, mysteriously, having missed on the first one. So I install it, everything's fine, configuration utility shows up, and then a dialogue asking for my activation code - which is already inserted, though lacking the dashes. The text telling me where my code should be is chopped off in mid-sentence, but I think nothing of it and go on. Doesn't work. So I insert brackets and check again - the code DID work during installation, of course - doesn't work. So I install both patches, 1.01a and 1.02 and try again after each install - no change. So I re-install the game over again, just to be sure. Still, nothing works. So I install it on my laptop - same problem.
So I think this is so darned stupid it must be me and search the internet some - finding a bunch of peolpe on the old forums having the same or at least similar trouble: http://meforums.biow...13936&forum=127
So, if any BW/EA-guyy read this, please make the activation process work or tell me I'm effing stupid and how to get it to work (that last one everybody who's able can do <_<)
It's a German retail version of the game, if it's of any importance...
Activation not working??

Hmm, that is very strange. Is it a legit copy from a legit retailer? Seems weird to have text chopped off in mid sentence.
If so, I'd try perhaps re-installing. And installing to default location.

Have already done one re-install - to the default location.
The copy is from an online retailer, rather well-known in Switzerland and usually reliable - looks like a perfectly normal copy of the game. And my DA:O copy from the same retailer. Can't say they specialize in games, though, so I have no clue where THEY got it from.

Same problem with a uk version. The game was sealed, from the EA value games serie. Can't get passed the EA activation. Tried several languages, installed with or without a firewall, check for any conflictual process.
The CD-key is well recognized by Bioware to access the downloadable content, but still I can't launch the game

Moved the "paul.dll" file out of the binaries folder, and I can finally launch the game.
Shouldn't have to do such things though.

I have no idea what the "paul.dll" is supposed to do, but that trick worked for me too. Thanks.

I believe removing/renaming paul.dll disables the on-line activation in favor of a CD-check.

This is why we need more wailing against the ridiculous DRM measures implemented as "standard" by publishers like EA.
When some folks are considering ME/ME2's DRM light... something is seriously wrong. With the 1000's of people have problems JUST because of their DRM in ME2, and even ME before it, and its considered a mild version of DRM? Did I miss the part where everyone collectively voted to bend over?
Massive stability issues etc... caused by DRM, people not even being able to access what they paid for... I know that I personally like to see my work actually accomplish what it intended to do and do it at the level that I worked for it to get to. Since every bioware game I've played since they started introducing more and more ridiculous DRM(KOTOR 2 approx) ran absolutely flawlessly when cracked, and crashed all over the place when not cracked(admittedly, ME2 is an exception to the crash part for the few hours I played the no-dlc version) your developers must be very well paid to ignore the royal reaming you give their code with the DRM schemes once they've finished creating something beautiful.
