I was away from the forums for awhile and was surprised by the new look when I came back. I knew something was coming, just not that it would be so quick. Having read a few pages and playing around a bit I have some thoughts.

There are many things to like about the new design:

  • the overall clean look
  • the general organization
  • being able to create/upload my own avatar
  • the option to change the background image
  • the ability to change my display name if I wish
  • I haven't used it but I like the idea of multi-quote
  • I like the idea of quoted material being a different color than the current text of a reply. But it quickly gets harder to read the referenced items because the text goes lighter, not just a different color. Maybe dark blue, dark brown, dark green and dark grey for the replies.
  • The signature line is easy to find.
  • I found the search option easy to use
  • The preview post option*
  • the 'Like' button, making it easier to show appreciation for someone's comments/ideas without cluttering up the site with a lot of replies which are just "I like this"*
  • the ignore feature. If this was there before I didn't notice because I've never had cause to block anybody.*
  • one more thing: how easy it is to see which threads have posts I have not read yet. Not that I read them all but for the ones I tend to look at more often it's nice to know that if the title is bold there are new posts.**
  • and associated with that is the 'go to first unread post' option, though I don't always see that.**

However, there are a few things which are not so good:

  • It's too bright. There's an awful lot of white screen which is harder on the eyes than a darker screen. (I know this is already being looked into).
  • Not enough contrast between the text and the background. In some instances the text is so light I have to copy it into notepad so I can read what is being said. Even some of the text that is dark is so small that it is still hard to read against the bright white. The default text needs to be a little bigger and a little darker. Light or even medium blue against white or white against light to medium grey is frequently going to be difficult to read.
  • The text editor does not work in ie11 very well. Earlier I could not copy from a word document and paste in here. I had to go to Mozilla in order to do this. Just now I tried to change the color of some of my text and was unable to do so.
  • What is the deal with the attachments? Are we supposed to be able to upload pictures or not? If we aren't going to have the ability to upload anything then this segment is useless.
  • No images in the signature line.
  • having to follow a topic (story) I created because of the date settings for gathering 'my content.' Is this something which could be changed by the user at some point?
  • a topic I create not appearing under my content*

Overall I like the new look to the forums and think that with a little tweaking it will be really nice.

One more quick note: everything I wrote here is much easier to read in this window than when I clicked to preview post.

I agree with everything you said. The things that bother me the most is white background and not being able to have images in your signature box.  I can't say much about the image attachment since I haven't tried it yet but I do see people attaching images maybe one of the people who know to attach images will be nice enough to create a thread explaining it. Other than that, you pretty much nailed all the pro's and con's of the new forum.

Oh lord I wish they'd do away with sigs entirely or at least give us the option to turn them off in the settings (if it exists, I can't find it.)

One of my biggest irritations on forums is having a thread twice its size because of images in the signatures.

My ad-block filter ended up working overtime on the BSN to get rid of them. The animated ones were even worse.

To block all signatures:

Go to "My Settings" , choose the 'Ignore' preferences , flag "Ignore all signatures when reading topics and personal messages".

Worked for me.

Thanks for that. Seems to be working on my end too.

I confess that I didn't think to look in the ignore section.

The tiny grey words lost in a= sea of whiteness is the reason I'm avoiding BSN.

That white screen is really blinding...especially in the morning before that first cup of coffee. Just saying.

Another way to do it is if you hover over someone's signature an "X" should appear in the top left of the signature area. Clicking that will give you two options, ignore all signatures or ignore just that signature.

I agree with everything ... I just want to add, that in this day and age it's refreshing to see a website redesign which at least makes use of a wide screen and doesn't have huge fonts on the non mobile site. A bright text on dark background theme should have been in at the start, but compared to just about every other website redesign I've seen in recent time that's relatively minor (look at the Penny Arcade site for a good example how not to do it).

PS. there is something wrong with how this forum handles line breaks while editing in mobile mode, I see them while editing but not when viewing my post in the thread.

BTW, the Bioware blog is worse than the forums in terms of readability. I literally cannot read the text unless I highlight it. It just blends too much into the background. Copying and pasting into notepad makes it even easier to read. Blue font is fine but it needs to be dark or at least medium-dark blue if you wish to stay with a white or almost white background.

How long the new forum been up?

and whats going to happen to all the profiles and stuff on the old board, are they going to be phased out for new ones or just phased out altogether?

Something I tried recently isn't working. I wanted to unfollow a topic. Under 'Content I Follow' I went to the line for the particular forum thread and click Change button. I selected 'Stop Following' and then clicked Update Selected. The topic disappeared from view but only temporarily. The next time I went to the view that topic was once again in my view. I have tried this several times but it is still sticking. Yet, if I go to that section of the forums I only see the option to follow it. It's like one side of the fence recognized the change but the other doesn't.

Thank you, Bioware, for the darker theme. I did some text testing below if anybody is interested.

I don't know how well they will do in small fonts but I tested some colors against both themes and these are the results. This line is the automatic option. It would be nice if it were automatically white against the grey and black against the white instead of it all being shades of grey. In my personal opinion having the automatic color be black would work for both themes.

against  dark                    against white

background                      background

decent plus           black         good and clear   (I find either Arial 14 or Times New Roman 18 the most comfortable font/size combos for reading)

lousy, blends       green         good

nice                 golden rod     a bit light

good               dark orange     okay

lousy, blends      brown         good

okay-ish              maroon        good

nice                   turquoise      a bit light and too bright

hardly visible       teal                nice

barely there       saddle brown  good

almost lousy        fire brick      good

almost okay         purple          nice

nice                    violet           too light

pops                   lime          okay-ish but a bit bright

I was about to make a topic about how I can change the interface on the forum. I miss the old forum because it was darker and easier to read. This new forum is too bright, the text is too small and it's easy to get lost. It's why I rarely write or even read this forum anymore. I hope the forum will be updated and improved soon enough.
