Race specific mounts are a dumb idea. A mount is a mount, you get one based on availability and suitability for terrain and load. People ride ponies, horses, camels, donkeys, elephants on this world, we don't look at your passport and say "Sorry, you can't ride this because you're American.".

We're in a fictional universe when we're playing a character in Thedas though. Is it hard to believe that a human could have a horse as a mount, an elf a halla, a dwarf a bronto, a qunari a brontosaurus?

A dwarf on a brontosaurus for comedic value

Mounts are good idea for me as long as Im still able to fight while riding (i.e something like mounted combat from Skyrim). If mounts are only for fast travel I will pass them.

Depends. Are Halla suitable for crossing deserts? Do Bronto find mountain climbing difficult? Would an Elf ride his mount to death just to perpetuate a stereotype? I have no problems with Elves choosing to ride Halla when it's a viable option. I think the idea that for some reason a Halla couldn't be ridden by a human, preposterous.

If the elves used to ride halla into combat, and we have seen concept art of what looks like a (young) halla being ridden on a very craggy mountain, I have no reason to think that they aren't versatile.  Brontos being used underground, in mines, as draft animals, etc. I would suspect that they're also pretty reliable.  There's a video showing what looks like brontos by a watering hole in the desert.  I could easily see them in and around mountains, considering the dwarves handle them.

Halla seem to be semi-sacred to the elves.  So, while I can see a human who befriended the elves maybe getting access to a halla as a mount, they'd be too small for a qunari to ride and maybe not sturdy enough for a dwarf (and probably too tall for the average dwarf).  Even then it's unlikely the elves would allow it, since they seem to treat halla as people in their own right.  So yes, it does make sense that not just anyone can hop on a halla and ride off.  The Dalish halla keepers seem to have actual honest-to-goodness conversations with their halla, if DA:O is anything to go by.  And that perhaps puts them above even the ridiculously smart mabari hounds in intelligence.  So it wouldn't just be the human's or the elves' choice in whether you got to hop on a halla and ride off, but also the choice of the halla, unless you enjoy having a sore rear end and a trampled everything.

My point being, anyone can ride a horse, but racial mounts should at the very least require a quest that would "earn" that mount.  In the case of elves, you'd have to show you could respect that halla as they do.  In the case of dwarves, you'd need to show you could subdue a bronto since they can be foul-tempered.  Etc.  And for that matter perhaps there would be some special horse that normally only humans could ride (or perhaps not, to make the other races a bit more unique).

I'm really positive about the inclusion of mounts in the game, but wonder how they'll manage it, given that this is a party based RPG.

What we know:

1) Horses will definitely be in the game.

2) Mounts will be persistent in the world, they won't disappear when you dismount.

3) There will not be mounted combat.

There have been people who said the horse/mount will be treated as a companion.   I'd need a link to the developers' statement on that to confirm it, but it would be nice and it would make sense--I don't want a mount that is basically just an object.  People get attached to their mounts, and especially so in the case of war horses, upon whom their riders' lives depend.  If it's just an object that stands there and looks pretty until you use it, it'll be a little more boring.

As for dragon mounts... much like griffins, I kind of suspect it'll happen someday, but as of now even the highest-end computers would have trouble doing that much loading and unloading of cells, if the engine isn't specifically designed for it. I do not think the engine is really designed for it, in this case, and all those textures loading and unloading would cause severe slowdowns.

Edit:  Fixed a typo.

I was thinking more in terms of our having mounts for companions (I imagine that providing mounts for an entire party would be super-challenging from a development pov). It'll be interesting to see how they handle things.

Well, they don't do that in Skyrim, for instance, but people have modded the ability for companions to ride.  So, as long as your party members don't vanish when you mount up, I'd hold out some hope that even if they don't automatically get mounts, the modding community will find a way.  Even if there's no development kit, someone will figure it out.

Aye, my preference would be to have the entire party on mounts but that's really more of a hope than an expectation. Fingers crossed.

I'd like to see the whole party mounted as well, but that would take up space. Dunno if its worth it.

It may take up space, but it works pretty well in the Skyrim mods that allow for it (and in those mods, the companions' horses can usually be set to disappear when they're done riding if having their horses around bothers you).  I have a mod that, when you've got a certain number of followers and summon horses--if your horses aren't near enough to just hop on--they all appear in formation and rear.  It's kind of neat, though I don't expect anything like that in DA:I.  I do want my companions riding along with me, though.  Imagine the horseback banter!

"How much longer are we going to ride?  My bottom is starting to feel like--"

"No one cares how your bottom feels, least of all the Inquisitor!"

Oh I would love for companion mounts to stick around. I just don't know if it'd be worth the work.
