It may take up space, but it works pretty well in the Skyrim mods that allow for it (and in those mods, the companions' horses can usually be set to disappear when they're done riding if having their horses around bothers you). I have a mod that, when you've got a certain number of followers and summon horses--if your horses aren't near enough to just hop on--they all appear in formation and rear. It's kind of neat, though I don't expect anything like that in DA:I. I do want my companions riding along with me, though. Imagine the horseback banter!
"How much longer are we going to ride? My bottom is starting to feel like--"
"No one cares how your bottom feels, least of all the Inquisitor!"
I really hope they do something like that. I find it extremely annoying when games (including vanilla skyrim) just let the player mount up while all followers just end up running behind them. I don't want to mount across the map only to have to wait 10 minutes for my party to catch up. The (semi) open world aspect allows all sorts of weird scenarios like this that could make it worse if companions can't mount. What if I take a shortcut by jumping down a hill/mountain, how do the companions path? Do they jump with me? or do they end up going all the way around to get to me.
