Hello,

To begin. Awesome game, amazing toolset. I'm hooked.

I started my first large area (32 x32) and started making large mountains. By the end I I had very tall elevations and very shallow ravines. I had saved, baked and loaded this area many times. I have even quit and come back to this module.

However today upon loading the game and module I load up the area and its flat and only contains the rocks I had put in for one waterfall area. I am okay starting a new area, but will this continue? Are there known issues with making large shifting landscapes. I honestly believe nothing changed from the time I had a successful load to this blank and flat load.

Thanks for looking, see you around.

Never heard of this. But you might consider not making so big areas. 32x32 is raising the load time and size of the whole module significantly. At least this comes from my experience.

Thanks for your input. Its reassuring to hear this might have been a new-user mistake. I'll have to keep in mind the long load times with larger maps, I tend to get carried away with those types of things.

On a side note to any: Is it possible to claim the outmost squares in the exterior areas to be walkable? I've tried painting walkable but it seems there is an outermost ring for just scenery.

Thanks again.

The outermost is always scenery yes. If you need crevasses and high mountains you can download the prefabs from teper. He has done many height maps for use as prefabs. Unfortunately I cannot find the link now. They do need some work to be useable, but they are perfect mountains and cliffs in my opinnion. Since I cannot find the link I show you one picture from my work that uses this prefab. I am certain somebody will link this here soon though.

As you can see, his maps go pretty high. You just need to work the walkable part.

Here is a link to Teper's Height Maps Vol. 1 you will also need yatt to inport them into youre mod, another choice would be to use some of the prefab areas nicethugbert posted on the vault.

One way to help from loosing youre work is to save in dir mode and make backups of all youre work in another area, also make sure and turn off auto save in the toolset options.

I've nearly gone mad at times, baking and saving a module only to have the changes not show up, even if I run it directly from the toolset. I've identified two situations when that can happen:

  • I've accidently saved an earlier version of it in directory mode, and the unnoticed folder takes precedence over the more recent .MOD file.

Solution: check the module folder under 'My Documents' to see if there's a folder of the same name as the module file.

  • An earlier toolset crash had left temporary files scattered about the harddrive in various places.

Solution: check the game folder under 'Program Files (x86) for a folder of the same name as the module file. It can also be worthwhile right-clicking on C: drive, choosing 'Properties', go into 'Disk Cleanup' and checking the box next to 'Temporary Files' before running the cleanup tool. There can be tens or even hundreds of megabytes of old temporary files lying about if the toolset has crashed a few times.
