Then it turns out the old gods were "Proteans" who tried to teach people things to help them but they were too primitive to understand..
And the magic is Biotics...... And lyrium is Eezo...... Which makes great powerdrinks if you mix it up with sugar....

An interesting thought. If so, we might well find out in this game, since we're finding more out about their sunken city.
I really hope we learn more about the Old Gods in DA:I, I reallllly hope so. After Legacy I've been so obsessed with them and the entire lore surrounding them.

I'd say no as the Old Gods were active before and after the Fall of Arlathan and I'm fairly sure the Elven Pantheon didn't get sealed away until the war between Tevintar and the Arlathan Elves began.
Plus we don't really have proof that the Old God Dragons were actually sealed underground and didn't just retreat to ancient lairs once they saw Dumat get tainted.

But we know Dumat was underground by the time the darkspawn found him. That's something both Dwarven and Chantry history agrees on. And if the Old Gods wanted to escape to the darkspawn why would they retreat to lairs in the only place that darkspawn exist between blights?

Where else could a building sized lizard hide than in a giant cave lair when it starts to fear the people it associates with are now capable of bringing a horrible affliction to them? Regardless of that I'm fairly sure its supposed to be the corrupted magisters who brought the taint to Dumat.
Plus dragon lore already shows that regular dragons are prone to periods of slumber/dormancy once they mature.
Also on the more speculation side I wouldn't find it that hard to believe that ancient high dragons have a strong enough fade connection to claim their own zone of the fade, plus a strong fade connection is the only way to explain how the darkspawn hear them over vast distances and the Archdemon can command invasions on the nation wide or higher scale.

Its certainly possible that they may come from the same source. That something out there is repeatedly doing the same or similar thing with some kind of long term plan or is simply an aspect of nature having "cycles".
And about elves as spirits....modern day elves simply see spirits of the fade as some kind of "creature" but most humans just see dragons as some kind of "animal" too except the ones that worship them.

When it comes to the mythology, I think we should probably assume that all sides are probably mostly wrong and a little bit right. In all likelihood the stories are mythologizing of less grandiose acts. The World of Thedas demonstrates that much of what we know about the ancient past is flawed and incomplete.
That said, the Forgotten Ones and the Old Gods being the same (non-divine) beings seems like a very solid theory to me.

I've been mulling over that exact theory in my head. I think that the Elven and Avvar gods are connected as well. Elgar'nan=Korth, Mythal=Lady of the Skies, Fen'Harel=Imhar (and they in are the Maker) Andruil=Sigfrost or Uvolla. I love the idea that perhaps Fen'Harel/Imhar decided that he wanted to be the only god recognized and worshipped, so he tricked the other gods and sealed them away. I also think the reason the Maker abandoned the people of Thedas isn't because he turned his back after the Magisters tried to usurp him, but that he was killed in a battle against the Magisters and with his dying breath cursed them and sent them back to Thedas as the first darkspawn. As for the Old Gods/Forgotten Ones, I think that it makes perfect sense. They are underground, which could be 'the abyss' and that their call to the darkspawn is a desperate plea for rescue from their underground prison, not knowing that what responds to that plea will taint them. That's my theory anyway.

Corypheous disagrees with your theory of the Magisters killings god.
Also being a god and said battle ground being on a boundless plane it seems unlikely a group of mortals could that easily snuff out his divine spark.

About Corypheus and the old gods, there is a sentence in this codex entry who looks interesting :

"... it speaks of the Old Gods by their Tevinter names"

But we know that he refers to them by the names we all know them as.

Even in Forgotten Realms, where gods do die, a spark of them usually remains. It's been the set up and/or a major plot point for a couple of games, like BG and NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer.

I want the true forms of the Old Gods to be a cross of Cthulu and Dragons.

Maybe? Maybe some of the mythology is just loosely based on things that happened and it's changed over many re-tellings.

Religion in Elder Scrolls took a nose dive after Morrowind, where the whole game forced you to work to destroy one of the only valid religions besides the Divines, leaving you with just Deadra worship or a Dragon that had already abandoned one people when the human uprising gained momentum.
As for the Elf Gods, while I don't think their related to the Old God Ancient High Dragons, my personal theory is that they were ancient demons and spirits from the time when the spirits and demons first split (and the elven immortality was actually a long term plan by them to destroy the veil by slowly pouring fade energy into the world through the elves strong fade connection)

We will most likely never know, as Bioware has repeatedly said over the years they are going to keep the Maker vague.

There are also the forbidden Ones whoo also are thought to have taught humans blood magic. In this codex. “The first of the magus cast themselves deep in the Fade in search of answers and power, always power. They found the forbidden ones –Xebenkeck, Imshael, Gaxkang the Unbound, and The Formless One. Many conversations were had and much of the fabric of the world revealed. And thus the magic of blood was born.” ―Unknown mage. We fought two of them already, maybe the devs have already forgotten them and are going the Skyrim way...the shallow way

Just a tip, if you can:
Open up notepad and paste your wiki info into that. Then, copy the text from notepad into your post. It'll prevent the highlighting in the text as well as the hotlinks. The only reason why I suggest it is because it's easier to read that way. ![]()
For the double post, I found out that is what the hide option is for. You can remove your post visibly by clicking on it.
