I Don’t Always Shapeshift, but When I Do, I Don't

Honestly, I'd never used Shapeshifting in Dragon Age - and from the sound of it, that may have been the right choice. If they do bring back shapeshifting in the final product, I'd also prefer something more balanced. Plenty of people in the WoW days respected a druid going in Bear form for tanking or DPS in cat form.

Pretty certain the Devs have said morrigan will not be a companion.

Not entirely surprising. She'll definitely be involved, but I'm not as worried about having her along.

Stealth.  Exploration.  Resource collection.  All of these could potentially be affected by shapeshifting.

Even if the animal forms allowed are limited, there's a great deal of opportunity there. I'm for it.

I'd like shapeshifting to have more non-combat utility.

Well and given the implementation and generic problem of not being able to spell cast that seems to be the "natural" use for it rather than combat. Problem is the aren't a lot of spots where a giant spider just blends in. Dog would be more useful for example.

I'd like to think that Shapeshifting was only shoehorned into the game to justify having Morrigan, Flemeth, or some other Witch of the Wilds infiltrate your party at some point, disguised as a different person completely, or to just spice up the original boss fight with Flemeth. Shapeshifting always seemed half-baked to me, and with the comparatively high amount of effort that went into creating different combat animations in DA2 compared to DA:O, I doubt they would do this for several shapeshifting forms that people will try out once and respec out of when they realize how limiting it is.

For the record, I like shapeshifting, but I don't like the idea of a mage casting a spell that keeps them from casting any more spells. It seems... backwards.

For once I find myself in agreement with Sylvius. If we had a companion that was a shapeshifter, then perhaps it would be interesting if it would give more options in dialogue, in the vein of Varric's sweet-talking. Perhaps having a companion slink in the shadows as a snake while you stall the big bad with idle conversation, in order to give the companion time to go in for the kill.

You know, if you develop your mage in such a way, you can be near invulnerable. Don't focus on damaging spells, but on passives to boost your stats. Rock Armor, enchanting your weapons with spells, increasing your defense (I can't remember the name of that spell) and quite a few of the school of spirit spells.

My first warden ended up with Arcane Warrior/Battlemage double spec. I felt like a demigod.

Aa you have said as much before, I don't necessarily disagree mind you.

Just seems to be a common theme.

Shapeshfting had some useful abilities. Immunity from overwhelm and other swarm abilities, 2 of the advanced forms had the Overwhelm ability, Swarm form recovered health after a successful attack, you could autohit with a staff equipped.

Overall, I felt shapeshifing added a lot when foes would rush a mage.

Maybe she'll be the only shapeshifter around.

the Problem was, that the magic spells were much more useful in tactical combat, than the shapeshifts.

I could see the thought behind that like  adapting to the combat situation.  Like Sten and shale were down and you needed a tank right now to back you up.

But sadly the shapeshifts were halfa** and ALWAYS TOOK MUCH TOO LONG TO DO.

Useless...and the arcane warrior was almost as useless to me. The Ghosthealer  was the only one i needed all of the time.

I wouldn't be sad if it was left out... or at least pushed to a new ranger-druid-class.

I read on either the old forums or the wiki that Shapeshifter damage output was intended to be tied to spellpower rather than strength, but wasn't because of a bug. I still took it everytime anyways for the roleplaying aspect. As for how it should work, something like the shapeshifting in the Fade in DA:O would be useful (no long casting times).

Also, people saying Arcane Warrior was weak need to reassess that spec. With the right build and equipment you could solo the game on Nightmare with it by making sure you never got hit.

Btw, High Dragons in DAO/DA2 couldn't walk.  So if you could've shape changed into one you would've been stuck in the same spot.

Wow, I rolled the same on my character, oh the power! Anyways they'd need to seriously re-work shape-shifting before I'd even consider touching that spec. Maybe they could make the final transformation a wyvern or drake/high dragon depending on your gender, but such a transformation could only be used: outside, for 5 minutes, and had a 15 minute cooldown? Transformation tree could go like this: murder of crows, spider, wolf, bear, red lion, troll, wyvern/drake/high dragon.

Dalish mages are also known for their shape-shifiting abilities, maybe we can learn it from one of the clans we may encounter...

according to something I've heard, shape shifting isn't necessarily bad, but to do it well, you pretty much won't have a mage because points would be devoted to otherwise meaningless attributes for a mage.

and of course, having a mage that's not really a mage in origin when both mage companions are locked out of the arcane-blood combo is a big no-no because I've yet to see one scenario in which a bear/spider/wasp can perform feats beyond powers of a humanoid-state mage..

But yes, any origins strategy involving shape shifting on mage was sub-optimal.

I didn't use her shapeshifting much during the fist few playthroughs. When I did experiment with it, I found it was useful, situationally, but that most of the time, she was deadlier using spells.

I have serious doubts that the combat and skilltree system from Dragon Age: Origins will be restored, though, so I think you may be worried about something that's unlikely to be an issue.

For me, shapeshifting was something for Morrigan to do when she was running out of mana and we were low on potions, which only happened in long battles so the cast time wasn't a deal-breaker.  Pretty situational.

But blood magic was vastly superior for me when low on mana.

I don't particularly care for using shape-shifting in combat, but it's just so dang awesome for role-playing purposes.

I'd love nothing more than to be able to transform into something big and fuzzy (preferably with 4 legs or less) and just run over fields and meadows, enjoying the freedom that comes with it. (Although that would naturally require an out-of-combat ability that lets you transform without time restrictions.)

I'd spend half of my gameplay time just running around Thedas.

Maybe it it had ran off her magic stat it'd be that much more awesome. I just wish Shapeshifting was as impressive as it was in the Ashes cinematic trailer for DAO

In the vanilla game, yes Shapeshifting was rubbish. However if you played on PC you could install gameplay mods that fix the gameplay bugs and make the gameplay work as intended.

In which case Shapeshifting works beautifully. It adds a lot of versatility to a mage.

I'd like shapeshifting to have more non-combat utility.

I want this too. More importantly, I want all specializations to have non-combat utility.

Bards for example can play music in taverns to get free gold. Blood mage can use blood magic to persuade and mind control. Keepers should be able to interact with forest creatures in a friendly manner.

This would be pretty awesome. Since the combat utilities might not even be good, maybe it should purely be a non-combat utility. I like all your ideas and I think the becoming a mount would be a good idea too. Also, (this may be stretching it) maybe this could lead to getting the ability to transform into a dragon and use it in a cut scene or two?
