In ME3, Shepard was subjected to recurring nightmares set in a dark forest we've never seen before, running in slow motion and chasing after a child while hearing random whispers with the occassional whisper from a past dead comrade, I did not enjoy the way the dream played out as you could end up lost looking for the child and trying to find your way through while in slow motion. All the while, the dreams themselves were pretty underwhelming in what it was presented.

(Minor spoilers for Dead Space 3)

I played the awakened dlc for Dead Space 3 that had dream-like sequences which shows several necromorph moons emerging around Earth and communicating with Isaac and trying to demoralise him as well as trying to affect his mind. I think this how Shepard's dreams should have played out, showing a glimpse of the space battle abover earth with destroyed ships with a destroyed Normandy SR1 and SR2 in orbit floating like a derelict ship, and Reapers surrounding Earth. The Reapers could try to communicate with Shepard the same way the moons did with Isaac, telling Shepard that the harvest will be complete and such, they could pretty much use Harbinger's threats from ME2 although maybe with another Reaper's voice. The current dreams in ME3 is a missed opportunity in my opinion as they were generally confusing until someone explained to me why Shepard was chasing a child and why he was always setting on fire with a horrified look on Shepard's face.

I'd prefer there were no dreams and bioware stayed out of my character's head.

Completely cool with the dreams.

I especially like how the last one usually interrupts the flow of whatever romance scene you're in.

Not sarcasm.

EDIT: I also like the stripping down of Shepard's armor and weapon.

And the appearance of the bench.

And the shape of the trees.

And the Child burning along with Shepard.

I liked the dreams, I just hated the subject of the dreams, the little kid. Out of all the people that have died in ME1 and ME2 Shepard is going to lose sleep over a kid he spoke to for less than 1 minute? The dreams would have been more effective if Shepard were dreaming about his/ her squad mates ( both current and former ), dreaming about how he/ she might fail them, let them down, watching them all die in his/ her dreams and having them blame Shepard.

That's why Shepard starts hearing the whispers of the dead as they progress. Which is all the more reason I like offing 2-3 people during the Suicide Mission every file. Really beats it in.

Would it have been significantly cooler to have actually seen those people? Yep. But I still dig.

Where have you been all my life?

Busy ranting about ME3 all taking place in a Reaper and the final choice determining its setting and the identity of the next protagonist.

There needs to be a :tinfoilhat: emote here.

lol

But really, the kid's ok. We cool now. No biggie when I shoot the tube. He was ready for it. He had his run as King, and now the organics are taking control.

~~~
EDIT: BTW did you notice that the games do the same thing?
ME1 has Shepard with armor and weapon on the Citadel.
ME2 has Shepard with armor and no weapon on the Citadel.
ME3 has Shepard with no armor and no weapon on the Citadel.
Destroy has Shepard with armor and weapon out.
Control has Shepard with more intact looking armor but the weapon dropped.
Synthesis has Shepard with more enveloped armor and weapon dropped.
The first time we fight a Destroyer, we use another entity to fight it for us. (we then get a dream)
The second time we fight a Destroyer, we use a targeting laser to help another entity to fight it for it. (we then get another dream)
The third time we fight a Destroyer, we aim and fire the weapon ourselves. (we then.. meet the Catalyst)
The dreams are fine, still trying to understand what SwobyJ posted but yeah dreams fine for me.
Think they touched the barrier between trying to tell a story and peoples own image of Shepard.
Unlike so many on the BSN, I've always enjoyed the dreams and thought them entirely appropriate for Shepard to experience. In my opinion, it would have been unrealistic for any Shepard--of any origin and no matter how "renegade"--to be psychologically unaffected by the events she's experienced over the course of the trilogy.  And the atmosphere of the dreams themselves was absolutely beautiful.
That would depend on what the purpose of the dreams was to begin with.
The dreams were great... the problem is that there was no payoff to them.  Seemed like a great lead-in to the battle for Shep's mind.
Well i disagree completely. I don't think there's any way for them to successfully represent the huge wide range of Sheps that have potentially been experienced. Trying to shoehorn in fantasies of a utterly generic brat was disgraceful imo.
I find the atmosphere of the dreams vomit worthy. The only way i can get through those horrendous sequences is to switch off the sound. I deally i'd switch off my monitor too and wait for those vile generic invasions of my characters mind my autoshep to finish but i'm forced to actually participate in the nonsense
This. Altough they could at least remove the Slow-Motion... It really gets boring after replaying and replaying those things...
And for you, I quote:
I think it's true that Shepard would've been psychologically affected by stress alone- nevermind everything else- by the time ME3's story is being told. I don't like that they chose nightmare sequences to represent that though.
I think hallucinations would've been better. I imagine a sequence where Shepard is stuck in his/her cabin, and maybe a friend or rival shows up and starts questioning or taunting Shepard. And the player could choose dialogue responses to control Shepard's reactions until eventually the person disappears.
Maybe some reaction options at points in the story where Shepard snaps or breaks down might've been appropriate.
The key is keeping the player in control, and not breaking the player's vision of a character that they might feel a degree of ownership towards. The nightmare sequences felt stifling to me because they failed on both of those counts.
Skipable cutscenes instead of "LOLUGOTTARUNBUTCANT" but I guess that would have been to videogamey, right?
Well, you know, they kind of lose their purpose when you can just do the following...
:whistle:
Simple fixes to make those sequences less awkward and annoying:
- make them skippable, as suggested
- instead of pointless "game-play" (doesn't deserve to be called that) of running around in a fixed set, simply show a black screen. Have the quotes of dead former squaddies play. Leaves what passes in front of Shepards' inner eye entirely to the player, and requires less effort besides. Add to that less cringe-worthy quotes of the kiddo to work with, and I would even be fine with said kiddo's quotes showing up in the first such sequence, rather than the hammy game of hide-and-seek that we have.
It could have been cool to see a scene from Shepard's service history in the dreams - Akuze, Elysium, or Torfan. Nothing that would define Shepard's personality or actions during those events, just an overview of the battle. Joker commented to my Shepard that her stress levels were higher in ME3 than during Elysium, so the flashback might have been an interesting way to show that.
This idea could be cool too. It reminds me of a scene from DAO.
