Okay so I've recently picked up DAO for PC after having only played it on console, and I gotta say it is SUPER different. On console I found myself button mashing with my rogue which was fine with me... But now on PC I've found myself with all these new strategic possibilities! :P

What are your opinions on trap making? I noticed that you can also buy traps - do you need to invest in the trap making skill to purchase and use traps, or only if you're going to build them from scratch?

I was thinking of running around in stealth mode and laying traps for enemies and then basically seeing what happens. Can they be powerful enough to take out groups of enemies in one go? Does that sound like a viable strategy in any case?

Basically at the moment my rogue is pretty squishy, and I want to eventually get her to the point where she can be capable of some level of crowd control.

Thanks in advance!!

I hate to say this, but traps are mostly a waste of time. They can be useful in certain situations. I like them when soloing the werewolves lair in the Brecilian ruins, for example.

Some of the upper level traps (acid grease, sleeping and such) can stun or immobilize whole groups of foes. What traps do not do is kill them. They are very similar to bombs in that respect.

You are probably better served by concentrating on poison and bombs. Once you can use bombs in stealth, you can draw your enemies into tight little groups. A little dual weapon sweep and whirlwind and the group should be down to little or no health.

Any poison that requires deathroot to make will potentially do stun damage These poisons are your friend as a rogue. The others are nice, but stunning is always a good thing for you.

Ooh bombs! Forgot those existed. So how do they draw enemies into groups? Can strong enough bombs kill them outright?

They do minimal damage. But if you throw them from stealth and stay out of range, the affected enemies will group and follow you for a short distance.

One bomb won't kill anyone. But throw 1 bomb from each group-firebomb, shock bomb, freeze bomb, etc-it'll be enough to take out a group of enemies.

Traps will hurt you but not kill you. A momentary annoyance, and any good rogue can disarm them.

Blood Mage boss in Denerim back Alley, also never go outside his room

You can lure him out, actually, by sending your party post-haste into his bedroom for example. That draws him close enough to be coned before he can cast spells that require line of sight, and anyway he'll have to walk through whatever nukes you planted in his way (Inferno, Blizzard, whatever), in addition to traps, grease and whatnot. He likes to cast Tempest on himself, so evil minds with the right toys might upgrade that to SotC...

P.S.: In cutscene encounters that are triggered by approaching a group of people it is often possible to pre-cast some glyphs. The gatekeeper in Jarvia's, various mooks in the Deep Roads, even Jarvia's room. The latter would not be possible with traps, though, as you cannot cast them through an open door.

Traps can be very powerful early on, and much cheaper to make than equivalent bombs. The small claw trap in particular does 100 damage and holds its victim for 15 seconds. My MinXP toon used them to great effect, when she was essentially locked into a room with five tough darkspawn and had to defeat them all on her own (Tower of Ishal, last room on the bottom level). Bombs have nice AoE but are too expensive to buy or make, so you have to treat the few that you can loot like gold dust.

Not just a mage, a bloody Blood Mage with the HP of a boss. If you neutralise or clash his mana then he may switch to blood magic and then you will be in a world of pain. Happened to me with Zathrian one time and with the mad hatter every time, only that Zathrian had line of sight and could cast Blood Wound.

He's a bad, bad man. Yes, very bad.

:D

I used traps. I used them in the fade. Line them up by the door. Freeze traps are great for the flaming Darkspawn in the fade.
