I wouldn't read too much into the meta tags on their E3 website. That's most likely just padding for SEO purposes.
As far as Nintendo itself goes, I wouldn't be that worried since the 3DS is actually doing rather well right now.
For them wanting to get the more hardcore gamers back, the problem I think is largely that the WiiU can't hold up against the Xbox One or Playstation 4 in terms of hardware. It doesn't have to be the most powerful thing out there, but having a multi-platform game should result in holding back because the WiiU can't handle it.
Alternatively, simply creating its own port and releasing it a few months later is pretty much irrelevant. I've already bought the game for another platform and played it.
It would also help to get some more system seller IPs on the console. Making SSB a WiiU exclusive really would have helped to move some consoles. A single game isn't going to solve their problems, but you need to create reasons for people to want to buy your games console over the other ones.
As crazy as it sounds, games would be a great way of doing that.
