What would you like to see with mounts?

I see there's quite a bit of hype with the announced mounts (I count myself as one of them!  :)), but what would you like to see in association with mounts in DA:I?

I'd love to see race-specific mounts. Examples would be Halla for Elves, Brontos for Dwarves, etc. However, this would take quite some time to work out, so I don't think they'd be able to do so in DA:I.

I'd also like to see customization horses. What I mean by this is choosing your horse's color, size, and if it has feathers. (What I mean by feathers, is the fluffy fur you get between the fetlock and pastern (aka, longer fur at their ankles). Click here and look at the hoof area to see what I mean.

Another thing I'd like to see is the ability to store a set number of items with your horse.

Also, armor. I'd like to see the ability to purchase or craft armor for your horses. If you do place armor on your horses, I'd like the speed for the horses to be slower to accommodate the weight of said armor.

What are your thoughts? Let's try sticking with just horses for the moment, as those are confirmed to be in the game for certain.

Please, for the love of the Maker, post things that might actually be possible to be placed in the game.

Well, on the horse armor/barding issue ... without mounted combat, & unless the horse is going to be attackable, or put up a fight, I guess it would just be a cosmetic matter.

My guess is it might be a bit like the Dungeon Siege pack mule ... put up a little resistance (mostly kicking anything coming from behind), and then mostly just start running away. Or, it might not be attackable at all.

I want to see fire coming out from the leg of my horse, then my steed have fire breath that can scorch demons, abominations, darkspawns and what not, she also have fiery eyes...and wings

Haha, as amusing as that would be, I think that'd be more of a mod type thing. I don't think they'd ever consider that.

I also want a magic sword that can transform my horse look like what i describe, as she did

Now you're just trolling. Those aren't realistic requests.

Why can't and why it isn't realistic? You ask what i want, and that is what i want, it is not you who made the game

Neither a magical sword that can shapeshift creatures or a Pegasus from Hell exist in the Dragon Age world so having them together is unrealistic, though I agree you are not trolling since Zelanthair never set rules except sticking with horses.

Sometimes what we wan't isn't realistic. For example, what I really want is a unicorn mount, but I know that it would very likely never happen. I'd very much love for Griffon mounts, but that will never happen, so I don't mention wanting it. What you were asking for would be near impossible to do. Though the game has an immense capability for customization, it would be practically impossible to hold up a sword and magically get your horse exactly how you want it. Swords don't have activated abilities in themselves.

Now, if you were talking about wanting to be able to customize your horse any time you want within the game (like you could do to yourself when you visited the mirror in the free dlc of The Black Emporium), then that would be a more reasonable request, as it could be possible to do if they wanted to.

I probably should have not assumed that people would be....more realistic (for lack of better term) in their requests. I'll edit the post to clarify that this is to be a serious discussion on what realistically could be placed into the game. If I wanted to discuss fantastical ideas as the one Qistina posted, I would have made a discussion topic in Scuttlebutt.

I don't know if I care so much about customizing my horse down to the detail of how hairy it is.The gear, and the basic color, would be enough for me.

I don't know if I want to be able to customize a rainbow pony--maybe with mods?--but using the basic metals/leathers available in game lore would be nice.  Armor?  Maybe not, but one of those blankets with your coat of arms on it would be nice.  Armor isn't really necessary since we know we won't have mounted combat, and I'm guessing horses won't help you fight either.

I'd like it if there were some system to interact with your horse like you can with the dog in DAO and DA2.  Not a "full character," but people are dealing with your horse, or you are, at camp/the castle/the stable.  No reason for this other than it's immersive, and maybe helps you get attached to your horse, as opposed to having a horse you trade in or sell to purchase a faster horse later.  Bonus points if you keep the same horse through the entire game (unless your horse dies in combat or something, due to a decision you made, like riding it somewhere you hadn't explored well, and you have to replace it).

As I said in the Mounts thread I made, I'd love to see halla, brontos, even wyverns for mounts.  Part of me suspects that halla, at least, will be included because of the concept art and because "only horses are currently confirmed" has been stated in several articles.  Which I took to mean that other things are in the works, if they don't get cut due to lack of development time.

I think Bioware said your mount will be a full character and not just a summon or something.

And I would love to have a Wyvern as a mount. But if we are stuck with horses, I'd like the workhorses more.

I thought someone said they wouldn't be full characters... so now I'm confused.  I kind of hope they are, and preferably that you get your horse very early in the game (even at character creation) so you can actually get attached to it.  Maybe have some mechanic where if you have a good relationship with your mount, it doesn't spook as easily or it can indeed join you in combat?  Or a mechanic where it spooks and stalls before you meet enemies, and if you insist on dragging it along into danger, it could get targeted and killed?  That makes being good to your horse more important--horses shouldn't be cheap.

as a player who pays for content and not aesthetics (unless it's genuinely caustic to see), I feel such purely visual features for what is effectively an out-of-battle movement speed modifier (think haste in origins, but no impact) should be in DLCs--let interested parties fund them.

Skyrim can do it with Wabbajack, if DA:I like Skyrim, i don't see why it can't be done

It just another model of horse, just replacement

Skyrim is a completely different universe than Dragon Age. That's like saying Star Wars should have teleporters because Star Trek does.

I disagree because things like horse armor should be in the game if it's included at all, not something you have to pay for extra.  And not everyone will want the same colored horse, but by the same token we don't want it to change color every time we ride it (Assassin's Creed II, I am lookin' right at you).

I don't want to see intensely detailed customization, personally.  Just maybe basic horse type (heavy slow warhorses/carthorses, slimmer horse, and maybe a mule) and color.  Then you could customize your horse's gear so that if it can join you in combat you can also have gear that you find appealing, as opposed to just keeping the default saddle that does nothing for the horse to protect it.

I also don't want my horse to just be a taxi or faster way of getting around, I want it to be something my character actually has to acknowledge exists when he or she isn't riding around on that animal.  Again, if it's in the game, it's meant to represent a living thing.  In real life if I were forced to rely on an animal, like a dog or a horse or such, I'd want to interact with that animal.  And if it isn't a horse, I want my party to recognize that and comment about it.  So it's an immersion thing, for me.

I, too, would like to have the horse as something more involved than a means of transportation, but according to existing information, horses won't give you charge bonus or anything of the sort.

We know there won't be mounted combat, but horses might be able to fight alongside you.  I don't hold my breath on that because it's not considered a party member, or at least I wouldn't think so.  But, a mechanic where if you are not careful with your horse, it could be killed by your enemies, would be interesting especially if there is anything in-game to enable you to get attached to it.  Then you suddenly want to keep your horse from getting eaten by bereskarns and hurlocks.

I do hope, as others have said, that party members ride on their own horses, and don't disappear when you mount up on your horse...

I hope they make ponies that can be used as mounts. A dwarf riding a pony in full gallop is a fearsome sight to behold.

I am almost ashamed of how late I'm finding news on DA:I! That includes concept art as well (even though it's only a possibility and nothing confirmed, I should've scoped this out much sooner! >_<)

Anyway. Enjoy this war horse concept art.

The only thing we know is mounts will be persistent. They won't vanish when you get on and off them, unlike certain games made by other devs whose names start with B (cough, cough). So as persistent entities, it is possible they might be customizable, could be interacted with - I guess all these things are still unknown (but awaited).

To be honest, if riding the horse is as fun as riding Epona in the Zelda games, I'll be perfectly satisfied.

As far as mount customization goes I would like some things. I assume there will be some sort of stable area from where we get our mounts. I would like to be able to choose the color of the horse and have several varieties offered. I would also like to be able to have tack that matches the aesthetics of my race, or generic tack to choose from.

I also would like realistic mount uh... placement? By this I mean that if you dismount to go do something, your mount stays where it is and you have to fetch it again. Like the Zelda games, I can see the use of a mount call or whistle that allows your mount to come to you, but I do NOT want to just magically summon the mount from thin air.

Finally, being able to mount random mounts that are around would also be fun. If I am mount-less and I dismount an enemy, I should be able to steal his mount and ride it away. If not back to my own base, at least to the end of the area.

No creature is more revered by the Dalish than the halla. No other animal has a god of its own. These white stags are much larger than ordinary deer, and the Dalish halla keepers carve their antlers as they grow, making them curve into intricate designs. In ancient times, these stags bore elven knights into combat, but since the fall of the Dales, they are used less as mounts and more to pull the aravels.

After re-reading the Halla description in the codex, I really really realllly hope they include Halla mounts.

Not knowing whether a particular mount is possible or not, I humbly submit Griffons! Griffons that were carefully nurtured deep in the Anderfels by a devoted family of breeders from the last (hidden) survivors of the [insert unknown reason (as far as I know) for extinction here]. Griffons to once more soar majestically through the skies of Thedas!

Griffons. Please. Thanks.
