So, I started reading this awesome fan-made comic about his Grey Warden, and I found this little gem. I love it!!

Lovely artwork, and it does serve to emphasize one thing:  Halla make pretty epic mounts.

Hm.  I wonder if mounts level up as you do?  Or if you need to make equipment for them?  Then you could level up and eventually get that war horse, or a halla with a magnificent spiral-carved set of antlers.

I like the idea of race specific mounts that was suggested in the original post. So, halla for elves, bronto for dwarfs, horses for humans, but what does the qunari get? A large battle cat, that's what... at least that is what I'm hoping for. :)

Kossith mount-Huge hyene mount, like in The brotherhood of the wolf movie

Edit: and wyvern that can use its wings to glide, have longer jumps and can climb up highter terrain (like horses in skyrim)

What if the companions will have their own mounts to ride? Headcanon time!

Cassandra rides a no-nonsense warhorse of a medium stock. Something strong enough to carry her armored self up and down battle fields and never flag, something like a chestnut Destrier...

Vivienne’s mount could be no less fabulous than herself. A pure white lipizzan. With its mane done up in meticulous braids with bells and ribbons braided through its tail. It would abscond mud and puddles like the best of Orlesian nobility and prances wherever it goes.

Varric would be riding Lil’ Sebastian, of course. Or better yet, he would be too scared of horses to ride one himself ("Dangerous at both ends and crafty in the middle.") and would ride double with Cassandra so he can annoy regale her with more and more embellished stories.

While the mysterious Bald Elf Mage a halla(!). Maybe. Or maybe a Friesian if he isn't Dalish.

((unconfirmed companion time)) While Sera the elvish ranger would ride a fast as lightning Andalusian and Iron Bull would ride a wyvern like he don’t give a **** and make Varric insanely jealous.

Varric: So then Hawke and I were fighting these 40 huge steel golems wearing nothing but our underwear when-"

The funny thing is that I am sure that this actually happened in some people's gameplays.  Well, not the steel golem part, but the underwear part.

But yes.  Mounts.  Animals that you can ride from point A to point B.  Not love or sex partners.

It might be interesting if not only did mounts level up, but if maybe there were a few hidden around the world that are special in some way, and you have to find them and do some sort of mini-quest to obtain/tame them.

Not quite like that; halla are the unicorns of Thedas.  But maybe that's how you'd get a halla mount instead of a horse, or a bronto, etc.  Which you could of course pass over if you didn't feel it was appropriate for your character.  Or if we have starting racial mounts, it'd just be a more epic/awesome version of those.  Or maybe it might be something else equally interesting, things that no one normally uses as mounts in Thedas.  Wyvern, drake, etc--dragons being sociable creatures, it's not really that unreasonable that someone could tame them--maybe not terribly wise, but also not unreasonable.  Domestication, though, is sort of out of the question, since only the high dragons seem to reproduce and it takes hundreds of years for them to mature into high dragons.

It's just a thought though.

Well, there was that one concept art:

It will be interesting to see how they do it. I'm kind of curious to know whether the whole party will each get a mount or whether it will just be the player character. If it's the latter, I don't really want to be stopping every 5 minutes to let the rest of my gang catch up.

My guess is one of two things.

PC gets on mount, rest of party "vanishes" (not from party, just from view), they "rematerialize" when you dismount.

PC gets on mount, rest of party simultaneously gets on their mounts, everybody rides off into the sunset (or wherever).

There is a certain visual/graphic simplicity to the first option, that is what makes me suspect they will opt for it.

So pretty much like Mount & Blade or Final Fantasy then? I think I could live with these options. It does make me wonder how big the map is if they feel the need to use mounts.

Brontos. It wouldnt be much different to roding a horse, except that you could crush people. :D

Well, if you saw the gameplay demo, I think those rhino-looking things are brontos (unless I'm misremembering).  So, there's certainly a possibility they could be used for mounts.

I really, really want halla for the elves... I can't repeat myself on that enough.

Wait at what point were they in the demo?

Hm, the official gameplay demo on the Bioware site, as the Inquisitor is running along there are huge rhino-looking things near the road.  They don't attack or anything, they seem to just be standing around in the grass, maybe grazing.  Pretty sure they're brontos, even though it seems like, being a dwarven beast of burden, they should be living underground.  But maybe they aren't brontos, or there are more than one type of bronto?
